Add deadlines to your tasks – December 5
Experimentalists on paid plans can now set deadlines for tasks, giving you the flexibility to schedule your work while keeping an eye on when things are actually due. Deadlines make it easier to keep track of commitments and plan what you should focus on when.

As part of this update we’ve renamed the Due Date field to Date. For most people, this field represents the date you plan to do a task and its new name better reflects that. We have deliberately chosen an agnostic term to suit as many workflows as possible. 🌈
How the feature works
To set a deadline when adding a new task, click on the Deadline chip and select a deadline.
If this chip is not visible, click on the three dots and select Edit Task Actions. Move Deadlines under the Show task actions section and reorder it according to your preference.
If you prefer setting up a task’s details while you type, use the {}
shortcut. E.g. {tomorrow}
sets the task’s deadline as tomorrow.
To add or edit deadlines for existing tasks, click on the task to open the task details view. You should see the Deadline field. Open the deadline scheduler and select your desired deadline.
Deadlines are present in-app alongside other task attributes. When your deadline is approaching (within 7 days), we will start a countdown to remind you that it is nearing.
In the Calendar view, deadlines are highlighted in the All day section so you can’t miss them. You can also navigate to the task details easily from there to make sure you’ve accounted for it in your schedule.

Deadlines should be viewed as an informative attribute for you to schedule a suitable date and time to work on your tasks. To get the most out of the feature, we recommend that you only set deadlines for tasks in which missing the deadline has external consequences.
Teams
Deadlines are a great way to ensure everyone on your team is clear about when a task needs to be done, while still giving the assignee flexibility in terms of planning when they want to work on the task.
To enjoy the benefits of Deadlines right now, everyone on the team would need to enable Experimental features.
Try It Out!
The Deadlines feature is available now to all Experimentalists on paid plans from v6706 on web and desktop, 24.9.22 on iOS, and v11536 on Android. Make sure your app is updated to the latest version to start using it today.
We know filter support for Deadlines is high on a lot of your wishlists. Work on this is underway and we'll be back with an update on that front in the coming weeks!

See your project’s completed tasks in the calendar layout: November 19
Exciting times ahead! We’re working hard to make completed tasks accessible across all views in Todoist. Soon, you’ll be able to transform your “to-do” list into a “ta-da” list, letting each completed task fuel your motivation for the next challenge!
Completed tasks in project calendars 📅
To kick things off, your project’s completed tasks are now visible in the calendar layout.
This has just been rolled out to all Experimentalists on paid plans. To give it a try, head to any project with the calendar layout enabled and switch on Completed tasks in the View options menu.
Now, you can keep a record of what you’ve done and review your project’s progress right from the calendar. Let the sight of your accomplishments inspire you to take on what’s next! ✅ 💪

Sync all-day tasks to Google Calendar: November 12
You can now also sync all-day tasks to Google Calendar with the new Calendar integration.
Here’s
Hugo to show you how to use the option if you’re on Experimental Features. 🤙To try it out, navigate to Calendar settings in the web or Android app, make sure you’ve enabled the Sync tasks to calendar feature, then turn on the Sync all-day tasks option.
After a few seconds, you’ll be able to see all the scheduled tasks assigned to you in the “Todoist” calendar in Google Calendar.
With this option you can time-block tasks from Google Calendar too (useful to minimize context switching). Simply add a start and end time in Google Calendar, and the changes will sync back to Todoist.
If you find yourself a bit overwhelmed by seeing your all-day tasks, you can turn off the option at any time from Calendar settings.
Worth noting
Similar to time-blocked tasks, completing an all-day task will add a ✔︎ checkmark in Google Calendar. Rescheduling or renaming from Google Calendar will sync back to Todoist. Note that for recurring all-day tasks, we aren’t able to support updates to a single instance (“this event only”) or some complex custom recurrences.

Open multiple windows on desktop: September 11
If you frequently switch between multiple views in Todoist, we are making it easier to view them all simultaneously! Now, you can open multiple windows using our desktop apps.

Sync scheduled tasks to your Google Calendar: September 3
Great day for time-blockers! You can now sync your time-blocked tasks to Google Calendar with the new Calendar integration.
Here’s
Francesca to show you how it works. 👇To try it out, navigate to Calendar settings in the web app and enable the Sync tasks to calendar option. After a few seconds, you’ll see a “Todoist” calendar in your Google Calendar account.
All your assigned tasks with a time or duration will sync to Google Calendar. Completed tasks will show up in your calendar with a ✓ check mark in front of it. Now it’s going to be easier to plan new events or respond to meeting invites as you’ll see your time-blocked tasks reflected in Google Calendar.
It’s a two-way street
Rescheduling or renaming a task from Google Calendar will sync back to Todoist. Note that for recurring tasks, we aren’t able to support updates to a single instance (“this event only”) or some complex custom recurrences.

Calendar layout in Today on mobile: August 22
The new calendar layout in the Today view is now available for Experimentalists on paid plans using Todoist for iOS and Android!

Head to your Today view to check out the new layout. Tap the

Plan your day
The calendar in Today is the perfect view to keep an eye on your plans and ensure you stay on track throughout the day.
You can add new tasks with a tap, or quickly rearrange your schedule by dragging and dropping tasks in the timeline. To adjust the duration, tap a task to open and edit the details.
Tasks that don’t have a time assigned to them can be found in the All day section at the top. To take a look at the full list of all-day tasks, tap the ∧
∨
arrows or [x] more
button to expand the section. From there, you can easily drag tasks to the calendar to fit them into your schedule of the day.
Android users will also have the option to remove due times by dragging time-blocked tasks back to the All day section. We’re working on adding this to iOS very soon.
If you have overdue tasks, you’ll see Overdue at the top-right. Tap on it to pull up the list so you can reschedule tasks.
Work in progress
We’re currently working on a few enhancements for both iOS and Android to make it easier to rearrange your schedule (like when dealing with overlapping tasks).
You may have spotted that the new Plan sidebar hasn't made its way to the mobile calendar. Not for now at least – we’re exploring if we can add it in the future.
Rollout
The calendar layout in Today on Todoist for iOS and Android is rolled out to all Experimentalists on paid plans. Remember, the updated version of the app may take some time to show up across all regions of the app stores, so thanks for your patience!
The minimum app versions you’ll need in order to see the layout are:

New Plan sidebar in calendar in Today on web: August 9
Remember when we said we were working to make the Calendar layout in Today even more powerful for scheduling and rescheduling your day? Here’s a quick update: the next iteration is already here!
Introducing the new Plan sidebar. ✨
Replacing the previous Overdue sidebar, the calendar layout on web and desktop now boasts a new Plan sidebar in the Today view, available to Experimentalists on paid plans.
Click on Plan at the top-right to open the panel. Here, you’ll now see a list of all your tasks for the day so you can quickly put together – and adjust – your plans. Simply drag tasks right into the calendar to fit them into your schedule. Tasks are organized into three groups:
- Overdue: all your overdue tasks
- Unscheduled: all tasks due today without a set time (you’ll also see these in the All day section above the calendar)
- Scheduled: all tasks scheduled for today with an assigned time

Get ready for a smarter way to organize your day – our new calendar layout will soon be live in the Today view for all Experimentalists on paid plans!

Francesca from the Calendar squad to demonstrate the new layout. 👇To try it out, navigate to Today, open the View menu, and select Calendar. You’ll now see today’s tasks in a 1-day calendar layout – perfect for planning your day and time-blocking tasks without getting distracted by weekly or monthly views. And, if you’ve set up our new Calendar integration, you’ll be able to visualize your day’s workload and Google Calendar events in one view.
Plan your day
Drag tasks from the All day section onto the calendar to give them a time slot for the day. To rearrange your schedule, simply drag and drop tasks around the calendar, adjusting the duration by pulling on the top or bottom of the task.
Click on Overdue at the top-right to open the sidebar and see your overdue tasks. Drag tasks right into the calendar to fit them into your schedule for the day.
In the works
Right now, the calendar in Today is only accessible in your browser or via the desktop app. But we’re working to bring it to iOS and Android apps soon too!
We’re super-excited to get this first version of the calendar in Today into your hands. Be sure to let us know how you experience the new layout; your feedback helps us a ton as we continue to enhance it.
In fact, based on early feedback from our alpha testers, we’re already working on some exciting updates to make the layout even more powerful for scheduling and rescheduling your day. So stay tuned for more improvements! 👀

Week calendar layout on mobile: June 5
A new week calendar view is available for Experimentalists on paid plans using Todoist for iOS and Android starting today!

Today’s new multi-day layout option is available in Upcoming on both iOS and Android. Android users will also have the option to use the week layout for their projects, filters, and labels. We’re working on adding this to the iOS version soon as well.
You can check out the new layout by navigating to Upcoming, opening the view options menu, and selecting the new layout (“3-Day” on iOS, “Week” on Android).
How it works
The mobile version of our new multi-day calendar layout brings some brand new capabilities to the Android and iOS versions.
Scheduled tasks appear on the calendar under the respective date. If you assign a due time to your tasks, they will be slotted into the agenda for that day.
You can drag and drop to reschedule them or tap to open the task and edit the details. Or, use the due times of a task to have it time-block a specific stretch of your agenda.
Work in progress
We’ve got a few improvements in the works on both iOS and Android which will arrive in future updates.
On iOS:
- As we mentioned above, the week layout is not yet available for projects, filters, and labels. But we’ll be adding this soon.
- We’ll also be adding a date picker at the top of the screen to allow you to jump to future dates more quickly.
- And lastly on iOS, at the moment we only allow going two weeks into the future and one week into the past using the new layout. We’re looking at increasing the timescales here and letting you move >1 year in either direction.
On Android:
- We’ll make improvements to how overlapping tasks are handled, which has some issues at the moment.
- We’ll also be adding an updated calendar layout switcher, as seen in iOS version currently.
On both platforms:
- We’re working on the ability to drag and drop tasks from the all day section into the timeline.
- We haven’t yet added the “Overdue” or “No date” task lists you’ll see in the calendar view on desktop. Let us know if you’d like to see it on mobile too!
Rollout
It can take some time for the updated version of the app to appear in the app store in all regions, so thanks for your patience! 🙏 On iOS, you may need to quit and reopen the app before the new layout will become available.

Week calendar layout on web: May 1
Today we’re kicking off the rollout of a Week calendar layout to Experimentalists!

How to test Week layout
The Week option will be available when using the calendar layout in Upcoming, projects, filters, and labels. To try it out, open the View menu and select Calendar. When you switch to Calendar, a new Layout option toggle lets you switch between Week or Month.
Right now, the new Week option is only accessible in your browser or using the desktop app. But we’re working on bringing it to iOS and Android apps soon too!
How it works
Working with tasks in the week layout has a lot of the same functionality as in the month layout, with a few new details to make the most of the more detailed view.
As in the month view, you can drag and drop tasks around the calendar to reschedule them. In the week layout, you can also quickly change the duration of the task by pulling on the top or bottom of the task.
You can also drag tasks back and forth from the All day section, making it easier to adjust your workload throughout the week but keep the tasks visible.
Any tasks that don’t have a due date assigned will show up in a No date panel. Drag tasks right into the calendar to fit them into your schedule for the week.
Rollout
To begin with, we’ve activated this new option for a small group of (randomly selected) Experimentalists. If everything goes smoothly, we’ll roll out to everyone with Experimental Features enabled soon. Thanks for your patience! 🙏

Drag and drop in project calendar layout: December 14
After reviewing hundreds (and hundreds) of your helpful feedback submissions, we're happy to announce that the number one request — the ability to drag-and-drop unscheduled tasks into the calendar directly — is now live for Experimentalists!
It's pretty self-explanatory, but here it is in action:
But that's not all. Our developer Paweł also implemented another of your top requests, and now scheduled sub-tasks show in the calendar layout too.
And finally — for now, anyway — we fixed a little bug that had the task and the cursor strangely distant from each other when dragging around. Now they're cozy as can be, just in time for winter!

Experimentalists can now use a calendar layout for projects!
It's the first major step on our journey toward robust calendars in Todoist.
They're coming, and we're definitely eager to work on them with you.
But first we need to solidify this important foundational step — that's where your experimental testing comes in. 🙏Please use our Experimentalist support channel to log any bugs you encounter.
Our beta feedback form is the place to suggest any improvements and to share any details about your specific workflows that might help inform our development. The more you can tell us about how it fits — or how you’d like it to fit — into your real life, the better.
To get testing:
First, be sure you’re updated to the latest version (instructions), and that your Experimental features are toggled on.
To make the most out of calendar layout in projects:
- Find a project that has a lot of tasks with due dates.
- In the top right of the project interface, find the `View` option on web/desktop or tap the 3-dot menu and View on mobile, and select Calendar.
- Once selected, all your tasks will be displayed in the new calendar layout. You can drag and drop tasks to change their due date, or assign due dates for tasks in the `No date` panel.

Reclaim your schedule with task durations: Aug 9
Your to-do list can be infinite. Your time… not so much. By popular demand, we’re bringing task durations to Todoist to help you take back control over your schedule and craft a realistic plan for each day.
As one Todoister put it when she requested this feature:
“I am an intern at a law firm, a social activist, a student and, of course, I have many other duties in my life. To manage all that, I need to be able to control how much time I spend on each of my tasks in Todoist.”
By setting the time you’ll start a task and how long it will take, you’ll know exactly what will fit in your schedule — and what will just have to wait for another day.
Then, see your plan neatly blocked out in your calendar app of choice alongside your other commitments.

Multi-task drag & drop: June 28
Latest Experiment 🧪
Re-organizing your tasks just got a lot faster with revamped drag & drop on web and desktop. You can now:
- Select and reorder multiple tasks within a project or section at the same time.
- Create sub-tasks in bulk by dragging them from left to right to adjust their indent level (or drop sub-tasks on top of their current parent task to turn them into regular tasks).
- Move multiple tasks to a different project by dragging them to the left sidebar.
- Know where you drop. We’ve added better visual indicators, so you know where exactly your tasks will land when dragging and dropping.
- Click and hold anywhere on a task to drag it. No need to find the little grey “handle” to the left of the task.
- Plus, reordering projects in the sidebar is now faster and smoother.
These subtle improvements will make keeping your Todoist organized that much faster and more intuitive. So you can focus on actually getting things done.

Thanks to your feedback, we've made some changes to the supported formats for the reminders shortcut. The article below (dated May 10th) has been updated to reflect these changes.
To make things even easier, you will now also see a couple of reminder suggestions appear when you type “!” when creating a task (on web and desktop).

Set a reminder for a period from the current time (time when added to task):

How to use Filter Assist
- In the navigation menu, select Filters & Labels.
- Next to Filters, click the + symbol.
- Click the Try it button in the Filter Assist banner at the top.
- Describe your filter in the Filter request field and click on Send.
- Wait for AI to do its magic. Your filter request will appear in the next window when it's done.
- You can change the filter's name, assign a different color, or add the filter to your favorites.
- Give a thumbs up or down to let Filter Assist know how it’s doing (this will help make it even smarter).
- Click on Add filter to add it to your Todoist.

Introducing the “!” shortcut for reminders (web/desktop and iOS)

Add reminders as fast as you can think of them, with our new shortcut support for reminders in Quick Add.
We’ve rolled out this new time-saving feature to all Experimentalists on the Pro plan (available on web/desktop and iOS). Now, the “!” shortcut will have you adding reminders to any task without breaking a sweat. Simply type “!” in the task name field, directly followed by the desired time for the reminder (or — on web and desktop — just select one of the useful suggestions that appear).
You can set a reminder for a specific time (like “!3pm”), for after a certain amount of time has passed (e.g. “!2h”), or to make sure you get notified an X amount of time before your task is due (e.g. “!30mb” or "!30min before"). Todoist will even understand when you add a reminder for “!later” (i.e. 4 hours later) or “!tomorrow” (i.e. the next day at 9:00 AM).
If you create a task at 8 AM, typing "!1h" and "!later" will create reminders for 9 AM (1 hour later) and 12 PM (4 hours later).
To make things even easier, a couple of reminder suggestions will appear when you type “!” when creating a task (on web and desktop).

Currently, the following formats are supported:
- Exact time: e.g. “!4pm”, “!2.30pm”, “!7:45am”
- Period from now: e.g. “!30m”, “!2h”, “!1d”
- Time before due time: e.g. “!45mb”, “!2db”, “!4hb”
- In 4 hours: “!later”
- The next day at 9:00 AM: “!tomorrow”
As we continue to fine-tune the reminders feature, we’ll be rolling out more supported formats for the “!” shortcut. It has been released on desktop, web, and iOS, and will soon become available on Android too. The reminders shortcut doesn't work on global Quick Add on desktop yet, but this will also be added once we release the feature to everyone.

Persistent Completed Tasks (desktop and web)
Experimentalists can now choose to permanently display completed tasks in projects. The new Show completed feature is available on web and desktop and can be turned on for individual projects.
It’s a great way to visualize your “to-done” list — to make sure you’re spending your time on the right things and to give yourself credit for all your hard work! 🤗
This feature is not yet available in filtered views, but we hope to add that in the future (and on other platforms).
To admire your progress:
- Open the project you want to view completed tasks for.
- Click View in the top-right corner of the project.
- Turn the Show completed toggle on to always show completed tasks in this project.

Tailor your Quick Add to your workflow: Jan 12
Customize Quick Add (desktop and web)
After rolling out this feature on iOS & Android, all Experimentalists will now also have access to the brand new Quick Add tab on the web and desktop where you can choose which task actions you want to display and in what order. Your settings will automatically sync across all platforms. Think of this feature as a way to simplify and tailor your Quick Add to your personal workflow.
This feature is not yet available on the global Quick Add on desktop, though we hope to add it there in the future.
To activate this experiment:
- Go to Settings > Quick Add. Alternatively, open Quick Add > click on the three dots icon. Select Edit Task Actions.
- Show or hide task actions labels according to your preferences.
- To reorder your task actions, use the drag handles on the right side of the task action to move actions up or down the list.

AI Task Creator (desktop and web only) → Install extension
Start reaching those goals with our new AI Task Creator extension, designed to help you break up tasks into smaller chunks.
To use the AI Task Creator extension:
- In any Todoist project, click on the three dots icon in the top right to open the project menu.
- Select Integrations > Suggest tasks from AI.
- In the modal that opens, use the text field to enter a task that you want to break up into smaller chunks.
- Don’t forget to share your feedback!
Habit Tracker (desktop and web only) → Install extension
With the new Habit Tracker extension, all Experimentalists can finally start tracking (and celebrating!) their recurring tasks’ completion streak (in the task description) and completion history (in the comments).
To use the Habit Tracker extension:
- Click on any task to open the task view, and click on the three dots icon in the top right corner to open the task menu.
- Select Integrations > Track Habit.
- Don’t forget to share your feedback!
Make sure to complete your recurring task each day. As any recurring task that becomes overdue at the end of the day, will cause your streak to reset.
Export to Google Sheets (desktop and web only) → Install extension
Documenting and reporting on work in progress just became a whole lot easier with the new Export to Google Sheets extension, now available to test for all Experimentalists.
To use the Export to Google Sheets extension:
- In any Todoist project, click on the three dots icon in the top right to open the project menu.
- Select Integrations > Export to Google Sheets.
- Use the checkboxes to select which task fields (including due date, priority, creation date, description, section, assignee) you want to export > Click on Export.
- Don’t forget to share your feedback!
Templates (desktop and web only) → Install extension
All Experimentalists now have access to a new Templates extension that allows you to browse, search, and import templates directly from within Todoist. On top of that, you can use the Templates extension to import one of your existing projects as a template for a new project.
To use the Templates extension to import from a template:
- In any Todoist project, click on the three dots icon in the top right to open the project menu.
- Select Integrations > Import from template.
- In the modal that opens, use the search bar to search for a specific template or scroll down to browse the list of templates. Select the template you want to import > Click on Add Template.
- Don’t forget to share your feedback!
To use the Templates extension to import from a project:
- In any Todoist project, click on the three dots icon in the top right to open the project menu.
- Select Integrations > Import from project.
- In the modal that opens, select the project you want to import > Click on Import Project as Template.

Task Helper (desktop and web only) → Install extension
All Experimentalists now have access to a collection of 3 Task Helper extensions, all designed to speed up your work and save you from having to perform some of the following tedious manual actions over and over again.
- Turn a task into an uncompletable task
- Apply parent task’s attributes to all sub-tasks
- Create a follow up task on task completion
To use the Task Helper extension:
- Click the three dots icon that appears on the right side of your task when you hover over it. Or alternatively, click on any task to open the task view, and click on the three dots icon in the top right corner to open the task menu.
- Select Integrations > Select one of the Task Helper extensions.

Conversation Starters (desktop and web only) → Install the Conversation Starter extension
With the new Conversation Starters extension awkward silences during your 1-on-1s will become a thing of the past. Simply trigger the extension and 5 conversation starters to help structure your meeting agenda will automatically be added to your Todoist project.
To use the Conversation Starters extension:
- In any Todoist project, click on the three dots icon in the top right to open the project menu.
- Select Integrations > Add conversation starters.

After introducing Boards in Today in September, we are now also offering Boards in the Upcoming view for all Experimentalists across all platforms. The perfect way to get a quick visual overview of what’s in store for you for the next 7 days.
To change your view to Boards in Upcoming view:
- Open your Upcoming view.
- Click the view icon in the top-right corner.
- Click View as > Select Boards.

Resetting sub-tasks upon parent task completion (All platforms)
We’ve now rolled out new default behavior when completing a recurring task to automatically reset your sub-tasks (up to 30) for all Experimentalists.
For those who prefer their sub-tasks to remain untouched upon completing a recurring task we will continue to provide the option to complete your main recurring task only.
To only complete the main recurring task on the web and desktop apps:
- Click on the recurring task you want to complete.
- In the task view, click on the three dots icon in the top right to open the More actions menu.
- Select Complete task only.
To only complete the main recurring task on mobile:
- Long press on the recurring task you want to complete.
- Select Complete Task Only.

WYSIWYG Editor (Desktop and web only)
After launching our WYSIWYG text editor for task descriptions and comments in July, we’ve now enabled the editor for task names as well. 🎉
To use the WYSIWYG text editor on the web:
- Add a new task (or edit an existing task) via the task field.
- Select the task you want to format.
- Select which formatting you want to apply using the editor.
- Don’t forget to send us your feedback.
Formatting text with the new editor will only be available on the web, but any formatted text will appear as such across the other apps.

A sleeker sidebar (web only)
Keep your Todoist looking clean and tidy by choosing which views you want to display in the sidebar and whether you want to see the task count for projects. Exciting: bonus, you can also add a Completed Tasks view to your sidebar for faster and easier access to all that you’ve accomplished.
To activate this experiment:
- Go to Settings > Sidebar.
- Use the checkboxes next to the views you want to show.
- Use the toggle to turn the task count on or off.
