There are many reasons why you might want to create an uncompletable task:

  • You want a task that functions as a header, which you can also add comments and files to.
  • You’ve created a parent task with several sub-tasks and you’re worried about accidentally completing the parent task.
  • You have an important task in a shared project, which you want to make sure that none of your collaborators will complete by mistake.

Luckily, it’s quick and easy to create an uncompletable task.

How to create an uncompletable task

When creating a new task, simply add a * and space in front of the task’s name to make it uncompletable. For example, if you want to create an uncompletable task with the name Flight check-in, you should write the task name as * Flight check-in.

Quick tip

You can use Task view to turn an already existing task into an uncompletable task. Simply access a task’s Task view, click the name of the task to edit it, then add the * and space at the beginning of the task’s name.

If you want to turn an uncompletable task back into a completable task, you just need to remove the * and space from the beginning of the task’s name.

FAQ

Completable tasks have a circle to the left of their task name, whereas uncompletable tasks do not have a circle.

Sections are a way to split a big project up into more manageable parts, whereas uncompletable tasks are just like regular tasks, except for the fact that they can’t be completed. For example, with an uncompletable task you can add comments and attach files, you can assign it to yourself or a collaborator, and you can also give it a due date and time.

This particular feature was unfortunately causing tasks to be made uncompletable by mistake. There are several instances where you might want to add a colon at the end of a task’s name — without the task becoming uncompletable — and we want to make sure that this is an option.
