Interview with our iOS developers

Ana - UI designer at DoistAna – UI designer at Doist

Shortly after the launch, we’ve interviewed the developers behind the new iOS app – Ana, who’s a Designer with a special interest for Interaction and UX, that joined our team in early 2013 and designs our UI, and Nuno – an experienced iOS developer, at Doist since late 2012. We hope it will give you a small insight of the challenges of creating our new app.

What was the hardest part of creating this iOS universal app? How did you overcome those challenges?

The hardest was to create an interface that could work well both on iPhone and iPad, taking advantage of their characteristics, dimensions and specificities. This was both a design and technical challenge.

The major challenge we had to overcome was the design of the left menu. On iPhone the space is really limited, while on iPad we have enough space to organize it in a way that makes switching between specific areas easier and faster. We ended up with two different layouts, one optimized for iPhone and the other for iPad, both keeping projects, labels and filters organized by taking advantage of each device’s canvas size.

What kind of technology did you use during this process?

This is a native universal iOS app, developed on Xcode using the iOS 6 SDK. All mockups, assets and images were done using Adobe’s Photoshop, Illustrator and Fireworks.

What do you like most about what the iPad version has to offer?

Taking advantage of the bigger screen the iPad version allows the user to see more content at once. This helps the user to be faster and get an overview of what they have to do!

How do you see the future of Todoist mobile?

In a real near future we will work the iOS 7 version and we foresee some new awesome features.
