Unable to launch Desktop App on Windows 8

I've always had a big problem with the desktop app. I'm on windows 8.1. I've installed the desktop client and it simply does not launch. See screenshot. I'm not logged in elsewhere in the environment and my browser is not open.

The web interface works fine... but I would prefer the desktop client.
Any ideas?

Hi,

Are you getting the same problem? (Windows app is blank) Please note that closing the app only minimizes it in the System Tray. Just click on the arrow in the lower right corner of the screen and look for the Todoist icon and double click it to restore. You can also change the behaviour of by changing from there.

Clyde

Hi Charles,

Which problem are you referring to? The screen being blank? If so, have you tried clearing the cache of the Windows app? Here's how you can do it. Go to:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Todoist\Windows

Please try clearing that cache and see it that helps.

Clyde

Hi,

What exactly doesn't happen? If you're having the same problem with Charles, please go to:

%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Todoist\Windows

Once you're in that directory, delete the cache and relaunch the Windows app.

Hi Clyde,

Thanks for the suggestion. Still no joy deleted the cache and relaunched the app. Still a blank dialog box that I clipped in the initial instance. Look like I have no choice but to uninstall. It's a shame I enjoy using the full desktop version on my mac running osx mavericks. It just simply does not launch on windows 8.2.

Hi,

Sadly we are still looking into issues with blank pages, and hope to find something soon. If these suggestions did not help, we do not have a solution at this time.

Hi Jeff,

Our developer are still investigating as to what causes this issue. Just to clarify, not all Windows 8 machine are affected by this problem. I have a Windows 8 machine and the Windows desktop app is just working fine on it.

We'll update this thread if we have any news about this issue.

Hello Carlos,

Please check if the app isn't running in the background already. If it is, you can bring it back with Ctrl+Alt+T. If you don't like this behavior, you can right-click on the red TD icon in the system tray, go to Configuration and set it to quit upon closing rather than hide to tray.

David

Hey,

I'm having a couple of issues with todoist. First, the desktop app won't run (Windows 8.1) and secondly my projects don't sync between pc (website) and phone (app). I have great expetations about this tool, wouldn't like to be disappointed.

Guillermo,

Please make sure each platform is logged into the same account, log out and back in again.

Also, our app sits in the system tray, see if the TD icon is beside the clock, you can open and close from there.

All right the issue is probably PROXY and these lovely guys do not offer a proxy option in their settings. And they require a tiny fee of 29$ for a TO-DO app that does not launch AT WORK. Yes, I am using this in my couch guys while watching some silly stuff. That's my favourite moment for creating to-do lists. I'd love to pay 29 bucks for this

Oh another solution, use hotspot at work, it works. Unless you DO NOT need to connect your company stuff while working!

I have a similar issue. Win 8.1 on a Surface Pro 3 Click or tap on the icon on the desktop or Metro start screen and nothing happens. There are 3 processes running. Terminate all3 and tap on the icon to run the program again and it launches fine.

Hi,

When you close the Windows app, it does not actually quit but is minimized in the notifications area so you can easily relaunch it.

Please change the close behavior by going to the notifications area → right clicking on the Todoist icon → selecting "Configuration" → and changing the close behavior to "Close". (See attached images.)

After doing this change, you should be able to relaunch the Windows app without manually terminating the process running in the background.

Clyde

This is still a problem with the latest release 2.6.4.0 running under Windows 8.1. No Todoist process or service launches. I have reinstalled Todoist multiple times without success. It's a little irritating because one of the main appeals to me was having a Windows app.

There is no TD icon in the system tray. It simply doesn't start at all. On the other hand, installing the Google for Chromebook app through the Chrome App Launcher is a pretty workaround.

BTW, the Chrom app is not tht elegant. You have to run Chorme in the Win 8 mode, which means more clicks to exit this mode to go back to MS Outlook or another office application.

There is no such directory. The only directory tree associated with Todoist within C:\Users\ is C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Doist_Ltd.\.

The behavior is: I click on the Todoist shortcut and the "waiting" icon appears for approximately two seconds. Nothing else happens.

This is pretty darn ridiculous that this problem has not been solved since at least the first entry into this thread on July 7, 2014. I had a problem last week with projects disappearing when I'd enter them in my Mac app. Now I am at work and both I and my assistant are spending valuable business time trying to figure out how to open the app.

For Todoist to be effective for any of us, it needs to be reliable and dependable with regard to maintaining the data users input into it. Without reliability of the platform, the cost to users in wasted time can be extraordinarily high. Please, please, please figure out how to solve this so we, the users, don't have to spend time doing technical trouble shooting.

That said, all issues in the Windows app and Outlook plugin are being addressed as we speak.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 for x64-based Systems breaks many apps that use .NET. Typical of Microsoft, none of its problems have been addressed or even documented in the months since its release.

When you close the program it doesn't really close, it hides itself. Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+A to unhide it or right click on the notification icon in the system tray next to the desktop clock and select Show/Hide.
