Old tasks re-appearing [delete the due date, and several days later, they re-appear]

This just happened on web, and then immediately on the Chrome extension (which has 1 more task that "appeared" than the web page). Hasn't affected my phone yet, but historically, it does.

I was working on Todoist.com, closed the page, opened it again, and several "overdue" tasks appeared. Some of them I had for sure deleted the "due date" for a few days ago (so I kept them, and just edited the due date so that I wouldn't see it unless I went to the project), and now they are back with extremely overdue due dates, making me think that whatever it is "syncing" with didn't even have the latest due date.

For example, a task was originally scheduled for a few weeks ago, I postponed it to this last Saturday, and then on Sunday I believe, I deleted the due date because I'm just not getting around to it anytime soon.... and now it's back, 10 days overdue.

I then went to the Chrome extension to see if it matched, and it refreshed with the same overdue items and even one more that doesn't show up on the web.

I can't find any pattern in what makes these show up. I've been having this problem intermittently for months. A week or two ago, I logged out of Todist on everything and then logged in again, and stopped having this problem for a while, but it's back. I use both of my laptops and my phone daily, so this isn't an issue of an unused computer suddenly trying to sync in bad data.

Sometimes I'll have the web app open, but I'll still add tasks via the extension. I did that earlier today. Is there any chance that is causing this problem? It seems weird that just a few random tasks show up, and the webpage and the extension don't even match (even after I "refresh" both).

My best guess for a pattern (but I have enough task turnover that I'm not 100% sure, nor am I sure if this replicates it every time) is that it's a task that I schedule for a certain date, then I postpone it several times (likely letting it get 1-4 days overdue before postponing), and then eventually I decide I won't do it anytime soon (or I no longer want to see it as a repeating task, for those that are due "ev day" or similar idea) so I ENTIRELY delete the due date... and then a few days later, it randomly shows up extremely overdue, along with several other tasks that I did the same thing with.

Also, my extension icon refreshes periodically, and it CORRECTLY shows that I have 4 tasks overdue/due... but when I click on it, it refreshes and switches to 9 with these extra 5 tasks. If I leave it for a few minutes, it changes back to 4. And then I click again, and it changes to 9 again.

Hi Ash,

At any point on any device when you edit your tasks are you offline? Maybe even on a bad connection? This could cause issues on how the data syncs to the rest of your clients.

That being said, it shouldn't really cause a problem. If you sign out of each app, clear the cache for your browsers (and offline data), log out of anywhere else as well, and then back in, do they all sync up properly with the correct due dates etc?

And to confirm, you are saying you think only occurs when its a task that has been postponed?

I was experiencing this same behavior on all platforms.

I ended up signing out and signing back in on each device whenever it occurred and the problem now seems to be resolved.

Yes, I edit tasks on my phone offline quite frequently. However, the phone is displaying properly, as are most of my computers. The computer that is currently displaying the issue is connected through ethernet and I've never noticed any problems, so I think my connection is good on it.

Yes, signing out and then in again syncs properly. (Didn't even clear cache, offline data, etc, or log off everywhere else.) Signing out and then in has reliably cleared the issue every time I've done it over the last few weeks/months, and then it comes back after a while.

I'm not sure if postponing it is required - that is just the kind of task that I frequently end up removing the due date. I can experiment to try to see if I can replicate it with and without postponing.

Looks like it is NOT necessary to postpone a task first. I created a task and set it to be due last Friday, just like a task that I've been postponing for months. I removed the due date from both of them, and today, both of them are back! They are listed as 4 days overdue.

So it seems to be an issue with removing the due date of a task without completing the task (so far, I've only tried doing that for tasks that are due the same day, or are overdue... I don't know what happens if I remove the due date for a future task).

I can pretty reliably reproduce it. Every time I remove the due date, this happens... but it takes several days (or sometimes a couple weeks) to show up.

I can keep logging out and in, but I have a ridiculously long (secure) password, so it's a bit of a pain to do that every few days, especially on my phone. I remove due dates quite frequently. It'd be great if this could be fixed sometime!

Thank you for the detailed information. We have been able to reproduce and find the issue causing dates to re-appear with our system. We are looking into fixing it now.

What a relief you found the issue, it has been annoying me for some time now. Please let us know when a bugfix is released.

I've been having a similar problem with old completed task reappearing but only in the web version using Firefox. My phone and the Firefox plugin seem to be syncing correctly. Logging out and back in did not fix the issue. But I cleared the history in Firefox then logged out and back in and it updated correctly.

Let us know if it happens again, as the Firefox plugin is pretty much the same as the web version so it should be the same data.
