Adding same label to multiple tasks

I am trying to figure out the quickest way to add a new label to multiple tasks. I'd ideally add the new label to so many tasks across multiple projects that it would be much easier to do this as a simultaneous change, but can't figure out how to do it.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Blake,

Unfortunately, at this time it's not possible. You can SHIFT click tasks to multi select, but it does not include changing labels, though we do plan to add more feature in the future.

Hi Brendon,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Shame it can't be done at the moment - any ideas when it may be possible?

Out of curiosity, is there any way I can export the projects as a template in any way, and then re-upload them with additional labels, (even as a new project and then delete the old one) or can they not be manipulated in that way?

Hello Blake,

Technically, yes, you can use the import/export template option as show in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Rl_CLGY_3o

The format these templates are stored for is custom, though, but if you'll see how labels are added there, you could manipulate the TXT file easily :)

Best regards,

Thanks - already seen that video and know how to export/import. Problem is, I can't easily see how this files are editable as text format and if I delimit them into columns, when I add the labels and convert them back into txt, it messes up the format of the file, which means it errors or doesn't recognise the changes. Are you able to provide instructions on how to add labels to the txt file in a way that does not error with the import?

Unfortunately, that's not directly possible. You can copy/paste the labels after each task's name, but if you change the format of how they're stored, it will indeed not work :(

In general, the TXT file will expect one line to be one task so if you would prepare a file with this content:

Task 1 @label
Task 2 @label

It should correctly add 2 tasks, each with the label in it.

Nearly a year since it was mentioned that Todoist hoped to add more "Bulk Change" features. Any updates on this?

I'd really appreciate being able to bulk:
* Remove Date
* Add or Remove Label
* Add, Remove, Change Priority

Hi todoist team,

Any news on when this may happen? The labels feature is quite buggy (for example, after trying some of the workarounds for bulk uploading tasks, it meant todoist did recognise the labels on my iPhone app, but not online etc). It's my main gripe with the product at the moment.

Many thanks,

It would be excellent, if you could add this feature.

It really should not be that hard. Functionality is already there for single tasks. In this case it should be only a case of walking through a list (with selected tasks), and applying desired action.

As with not being able to sort labels (even alphabetically), this is a ridiculous usability miss.

This basically makes it incredibly painful to adapt one's workflow once one is embedded in the platform.

Maybe you guys could spend a little less time on shiny new iOS apps, and a little more on basic usability fixes?

+1 for ability to add labels to multiple tasks at once.
Todoist's customisable filtering options is one of it's strongest points, but the speed of filtering is let down by the clunkiness of adding properties to groups of tasks in the first place.

Actually the proccess of adding/deleting labels to tasks could be much, much improved; One label at a time, one task at a time... multiply clicks to change 4 labels to 15 tasks...

The ideal workflow: first select all tasks where we want to change labels, then click "@". A list sould be shown with all labels, with the option of tick/untick as many as we need. Then click OK and voila, many labels updated to many tasks at once.

Doing that with present implementation is a neverending job, instead.

I'm a premium user since 1 day and I found a lot of very basic functionalities labelled as "Unfortunately, that's not possible" by support (e.g. edit multiple selection, labelling a project, easily export/import or copy/paste projects, single reminders in the android app for single task, possibility to manage reminders in the android app, a very basic management if you are in mobility with an android smartphone/tablet - e.g. can't creat a label -, etc.).
I also read very dated basic requests without improvements.
Sorry to say this ... you've great interface, great integration with browsers, windows, iOS, great support (even if often without a solution to a new request), etc. ... but also several basic things to improve.
This service has great potential guy ... but it seems not so mature yet.
I think you guys are doing your best and I'm sure you reach all goals ... it's a question of time for me.
I hope you take this message as an encouragement to do better and to think to basic essentials functionalities as first.
I'll try to stress this product for the next days to try to understand if it is the right one for my needs (I know I'm a rookie). I really believe that all this number of premium users means a lot about the goodness of todoist.

I agree with most people here, basic functionally are lagging behind....just like apple did for copy-paste.

I think all premium should ask for a refund if certain basic elements are not provided, maybe this way the team would react.

I don't care about fancy Ux if basic function are not even fulfilled...

I'm here a bit more than a week and I have to agree with other people here.

It seems the staff people don't care on feature requests. If you search around you will find a shit load of different request that were answered with always the same "Unfortunately, that's not possible, but we consider bla, bla, bla."

The changes never happened, no updates are given to the topics with a statement like "will not implemented in near future" or something like this.

This is really annoying as I expect that the support is more responsive as they are and I expected they taking care about paying customers.

Unfortunately most features are not working in the free version, so I had to pay for labels, reminders etc and recognized that some standard features are not working.

I smells a bit like, get the money and do nothing.

Hello Sasha,

We've implemented a lot of requested features over the past years and will continue to do so for years to come. Unfortunately, we can't implement all hundreds of requests in a short time.

We can't make a statement that we will certainly not implement a certain feature as it's simply not true. There were multiple features we didn't plan to add at first, but added at a later time.

sasha  premium
Replied on Aug 06, 2015 - 12:38 UTC

Hi David,

that worked.. ;)

I would expect that you have a roadmap for future releases.

If a requested feature is not in the plan, you could simply state that.

The point is, people asking for a feature and getting the same answer as usually but do not get any updates, also if they are asking for an update, in the most cases there is no update, as example this topic. People were asking for updates and the latest update was 8 month ago!

On the end you answered after I wrote an aggressive comment, but you are not giving an update on this.

"..we can't implement all hundreds of requests in a short time."

Understood, but 1 year and 8 month is in my understanding not a short time.

I could copy some topics in this comment with simple requests that are already 3 years old, same request was coming up again and again over the years, but it makes no sense to follow on this right now, you got the point.

There is nothing more frustrating than getting no updates, especially if you like an app, want to use it in the future and hoping a really wanted feature is coming in the near future.

You may should consider to change this behaviour, as we are all paying customers and we still want to use the app in the future.

David Trey  staff
Replied on Aug 06, 2015 - 12:48 UTC

Thank you for your feedback, we'll try to post more updates more often and also post more about the features we're working on in the future.

There are indeed a lot of requests from 3+ years ago as that's the time when we've opened our support forum and most requests started to come in around that time. Many of these requests have been indeed implemented, Without them Todoist would not have any collaboration features, offline mode, wouldn't be available on some platforms, wouldn't have drag & drop, quick scheduling, an Inbox and many other features, but of course there are still some open requests that we hope we can complete in the future. It's very difficult to predict when, though, as we don't want to release something that won't work correctly at launch (we've made that mistake already) so no release date would be accurate and we may need to postpone it multiple times.

Nonetheless, please rest assured that we are reading every reply in every thread, have lists of requests, discuss the next features after the release of any new feature so you can expect many great changed for years to come :-)

I'll echo the need for better label management. Most of my projects I want to keep labeled a certain thing. Or I may change my mind on something and need to relabel a bunch of tasks at once.

Or if I have sub-tasks of something, it should automatically assume the parent labels IMO (or at least have that option).
