Hi Ana,

Unfortunately, at this time there is no way to accomplish this. With our Premium service you can import TXT files, but from reporting accounts, this does not work with most other to-do apps.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

This is really a show stopper. My toodledo subscription is up, but when I think about recreating all the Checklists and 150 to 200 tasks (many of which are "projects) it seems like a waste of time.

I cannot believe you can't provide a CSV or some other simple import. I'd even be happy to reorg the tasks and projects but to have to type in everything is just hard to fathom given your posture with your API.

The project import template...doesn't provide a format, so it's difficult to create a txt file from other system to import that works. Can you at least publish that?

Hello Clark,

The most basic format for our import template feature is that one line equals one task. If you just copy/paste all tasks into a TXT file, at least all their names will be imported correctly.

If multiple tasks have the same due date, you can then hold CTRL while clicking on them to multi-select them and then use the "Change date" option from the top menu to set the same date for all selected tasks.

Another user has documented the format we use for importing tasks in this thread: http://todoist.com/Support/showQuestion/4269/

Best regards,

For me, this is a no-change-application reason. I see that Todoist is very nice and useful, but I will wait to adopt it till it will be possible to import tasks from other similar applications.

Wow. That is a showstopper for me too. I've heard good things about Todoist, but I will not manually re-enter my data and as a mother of two small children, I don't have time to mess around with formatting a text file. Please add this feature and I'd likely be a Premium subscriber asap.

Long time RTM premium user. I'm intrigued by Todoist, especially subtasks, but without a way to import my stuff from RTM, it's not gonna happen.

Me too! I'm very tempted by todoist but there is no way I'm manually reentering ALL of my tasks from Toodledo or faffing around editing a txt file in order to get them to import in a vaguely useful way! The main thing that stops me from seriously trying out todoist is this lack of an import feature, and I'm certain that many other potential users feel the same.

I have to agree with the other comments; I'd love to try todist, but can't justify manually re-entering all my tasks from Toodledo.

I'm giving it a go, but only because I'm at a lull in the year...from past experience I know this is what always stops me making the switch, so I've surprised myself this time. Todoist, it's worth putting this a little higher on the R&D priority list - you're missing subscriptions because of it!

Want to add my voice and say that I'd like to try Todoist, but there's not way I'm going to re-enter 200+ tasks from Toodledo. Lack of import options is a show stopper!

I think it's the same for many people. For me as well.

Same for me. I love the look of ToDoist, but I have hundreds of tasks to import from different lists (I use my to-do list as a storage for ideas too).

This is a must-have feature. And it seems silly that you would need to upgrade just to migrate your data to see if you like ToDoist at all!

Take a look at https://todoport.com - I built it for exactly this purpose. Supports migration from Google Tasks and Toodledo, for basic features at least.

Thanks Chris, that worked awesomely!

@Chris - Awesome.
This todoport may have just become what it takes a lot of folks from other places (like toodledo) to come over to todist by bringing down the entry barrier. It did for me. Thank you. You should get some credit from Todoist folks imho!

Is there an import solution for any.do users?

Chris Harris
Replied on Dec 14, 2014 - 20:39 UTC

@Christian - not that I know of. Any.do don't provide an API so getting data out of there is difficult. Some people have tried to reverse-engineer the API but there's nothing usable out there. Without the co-operation of the company it's difficult to write import/export tools.

Vote here to let Any.do know you want portabiilty http://anydoiphone.uservoice.com/forums/166922-general/suggestions/4004282-release-official-any-do-api

The same goes for big players like Nozbe and Wunderlist - to my knowledge only Todoist, Toodledo, Google (Tasks), and Asana provide good APIs that give you control over your own data.

One work-around - although I think given the user demand for this feature should trump all - kinda poor business leadership - would be to use Zapier to integrate with Gmail and then automatically email any tasks from your old program into ToDoist. Not super smooth, but better than manual importing them. I'm trying to do this now with Asana, as I prefer to keep track of my tasks in ToDoist for the simplicity. Although I can readily export all my tasks to CSV from Asana.

Chris Harris - you are absolutely BRILLIANT!! Thank you so much for that! Todoist owes you a lot for so many premium subscriptions you are earning them...they really need to credit you and post your creation in their "getting started" area, and the should pay you handsomely for it!

I donated to your site via Paypal, and I hope others do to! If not for your import tool, I wouldn't be switching over and purchasing a premium subscription.

Sy, Grace - thanks for the kind comments (and many thanks Grace for the donation!).

I noticed my earlier comment of Dec 14 and should update - Wunderlist now does have a nice API that Todoport supports.
