Tasks Off Date

I understand this is a problem because of changing time zones, but I need to at least know how to avoid it.

My tasks are now showing up a day late. When I click to edit them they show the right dates, but they aren't appearing in the list on time unless I edit and re-save them in some way.

How do I avoid this? I changed my time zone on the website, but the mac app doesn't have a setting option (it just takes you to the webpage and the setting was already changed for that), and the mobile app doesn't have a time-zone setting.

I travel enough that this is really frustrating. How do I keep this from happening every time I cross a time-change?

The timezone for the Mac app is based off your computers Timezone setting, and the mobile apps are based off your devices timezone. Please make sure your computer and device are on the correct timezone as well.

Hi Brendon,

I was travelling last week and also experienced that the time zone changes messed up my remined times. Could you please explain, what the expected behavior should be.

Assume that before going on a trip I ceeated a task with a reminder set to 10:00am CET. At the trip's target location I chnage my computer's time zone to Pacific time (9 hours "behind" CET); when will the reminder be sent?
Let's assume that in the scenario above I do not only change my computer's time zone, but also the time zone setting in ToDoist; when will the reminder be sent, now?

I usually want my reminders to be sent at the specified time of the day, irregardless of the time zone I am currently in. For this to work, do I have to adjust ToDoist time zone setting or should I leave it untouched?

Thanks and regards,

Hello Andy,

Basically, Todoist's time zone must always match the zone on your device and must always be adjusted if your device changes the zone. On the web and all web-based plugins (incl. the Mac app), when Todoist detects a difference in your time settings, you'll see a message on the screen asking you if you want to adjust your Todoist time zone. All you need to do is just choose "Yes" and that's it. Every task and every reminder should then have the correct time.

As for the mobile apps - the Android app has a settings where you can adjust the time zone in Todoist, but the current iOS app not. We're very close to the release of our new iOS app and it will have more settings and we also plan to add the prompt asking you to adjust the time zone to our mobile apps to avoid having to go to the settings manually.

That said, every time you enter a new time zone, make sure the device you're using has the new zone and adjust the time zone in Todoist and everything should work correctly.

Hi David,

thanks for your explanation, but what does "should work correctly" mean? How do you define "correct" behavior?

I did as you said and changed the time zone setting on my computer as well as in Todoist to the new timezone; the result was that all my reminder times changed.
I have a weekly recurring task to review the status of all my projects; the reminder is set to Monday morning at 09:00am. I want this reminder to actually be sent at 09:00am, no matter where I am. After adjusting the time zone during my recent trip, the reminder was sent at midnight, instead. How can I avoid this?

The correct behavior is - you're in the US and set a task to 9am (reminder to 8:30am), then you go to Europe, adjust your time zone and both the task and the reminder should still be set to 9am and 8:30am accordingly.

There's of course the issue of traveling between timezones to areas where a certain time already passed in which case the reminder may not arrive at all, but usually you won't plan it for a time that you know you'll miss during travel.

So to clarify - the adjustment of the time zone is keeping all times and dates exactly the same regardless of your current location. Not adjusting it may cause issues such as having every time off or even incorrect dates for tasks with no specific due times (as a task without a time is by default stored as due 23:59:59 so any delay can schedule it for the next day.

Hi David,

this is not was I was seeing; even though I changed the time zone in Windows as well as in Todoist, all my reminders changed the time.

I might have made a mistake, though, so I will pay close attention and actually try to keep some examples if I run into the same issues, again.

In the meantime thanks for your help.
