sort tasks by date

Hello there,

I like to sort all my tasks by date in each project and I know how to do it.

My problem is that the app does not remember it and I have to do it every time I open the app. Is there a way to make it remember once and for all that it is the way I like to view my tasks.

Thanks in advance and thank you for your amazing work. Todoist has become a central piece to my productivity.

Cheers !

Hello Laurent,

When you sort your project by date or any other way, it should remember that the next time you open it, unless you have added another task to the project. When you add another task to a project it defaults to the bottom of the list, you will have to sort by date again for it to organize with the rest of the tasks.

Please confirm, are you adding new items to the list, or does the list really not remember it's choice? You are using the Windows App?

+1 for an option to permanently keep the tasks in all projects default sorted by date order, with the new tasks filed into date order as I add them.

Love this product, and even more, love how much you are always striving to fine-tune it.

Same here. It should keep the same order by date, its a pain to have to sort it every time. Is there a way to keep it by date ?

Hello Pouya,

Unfortunately, there's currently no way to permanently maintain an auto-sort status to tasks. We may consider adding such option in the future, though.

Just wanted to add my support for having new tasks automatically show up in order by date rather than at the end of the list.

Agreed. Tasks should always maintain sorting automatically, thus the definition of sort. Frankly, this is essentially a non-starter for me with this app.

I won't sign up for a premium account until this issue is addressed. It's crazy that I have to continually sort my tasks manually.

I was going to sign up for the premium account until I saw this wasn't already a feature. I will stick with RTM until it's fixed.

+1 on making it so new tasks added to a list are automatically sorted by date or priority (depending on how your specific list is configured)

For now though, hitting the 's' key is enough to sort by date whenever a new task is added and 'p' will sort by priority.

That'd be great

1+ for auto-sorting

@Perry, thanks for the tip

+1 for more sophisticated sorting. I've got a project ("work") with some real projects underneath it, indented. When I click on "work", it shows me all sub projects, which is great - but there's no way to sort this by date descending apart from one by one.

I agree, +1 for the automatic sorting by due date.

Cannot believe, that this simple feature isn't implemented. I planned to switch to todoist until i saw this feature is missing.

Simple fix for a big usability gain - this gets a big vote from me

+1 for this. my preference is to sort by date. when i checked off "laundry", a recurring weekly task, i was puzzled as to why it never moved down to the bottom of my list. instead, each time i clicked its checkbox, the date kept postponing by a week (but "laundry" still remained at the top). it would give me a psychological boost to have it bumped down the list, albeit temporarily!

+1 from me as well. I will not upgrade until this feature is implemented. It is becoming enough of an annoyance that I may drop Todoist completely.

I assumed this was a bug, apparently just not implemented at all?
Why would I want new tasks with a due date of today to appear at the bottom of the list (where the rest is sorted in date order)?

+1 Pleaaase put some effort on this issue!

The omission of sorting by due date makes the app VERY dangerous for paying bills.

This thread has existed for eight months with no more substantial response other than " We may consider adding such option in the future, though." ?!?!

Allowing the option to sort by due date by default is not a feature, nor an option. It is basic functionality and as a subscriber I feel like the victim of a bait and switch.

Hello a,

If you click on "today", "7 days" or use any other date-based search or filter - all your tasks will always be automatically sorted by date on both free and Premium accounts.

Within a project, you can also quickly sort them by hitting the "s" key. The only missing option is a permanent sort within projects which will may indeed consider adding in the future, but only as an option otherwise it would be very difficult to create task and sub-task structures it the moment you add a task, it will jump somewhere else and you'll then have to find it to create a sub-task (which would also lose its order if it's dated).

Best regards,

Ah, I see. Sorry, I was a little hot as I almost missed paying a bill - thanks for explaining the rationale behind the default sorting decision, and all the same, please do add the sort option.

I agree, please add permanent sorting by date. Perhaps that's one choice, and the other is only sort by date right now, then newly added ones can still be arranged manually.

+1 a "automatic and permanent" sort would be so great

In response to the rationale explained above, there's a simple fix:

Have an option for manually "Sort by Date" like there is right now. Have an option "Always Sort by Date" for everyone in this thread (and the many others who haven't voiced their opinion).

That way people who create sub-tasks are happy, and those of us who don't are also happy ;-)

Cheers, really love Todoist. This is my only annoyance.
