We have sent a test through our new system and you should receive a message with the content:

"Todoist SMS reminders work! Remember if your task is due "today at 10am" Todoist will send a reminder 30 minutes before this deadline!"

Please confirm:
- Did you receive this message?
- If so, do reminders work now for you?

Best regards,
David

Hi Hardik,

I have now consulted our SMS provider to check which service you should enable. Once I hear back from them, I'll let you know by replying to this thread with an update.

To be honest,
Even though am also Fully blocked for Airtel services..

I receive almost all important notifications from various categories like Banks, Cards, Shopping etc etc.

ToDoist have to whitelist itself to provide notifications even though the customer is active for DO NOT DISTURB.

Hi Todoist folks:
Here is one more input that you need to consider - Google from its calendar is able to send out messages even though I am registered on DND.

I am also planning to go Premium unless this aspect of being able to send a text/SMS reminders is working.

This is important as I rely more on texting services.

Venkat.

That's a good point you raised Venkat.

I am also receiving all SMSes from Google, Microsoft, etc. Not sure why
Todoist is an exception here. Can you provide en ETA?

Hi Adithya,

I've checked with our SMS provider and unfortunately they can't really send messages to numbers that are currently on the do not call list. :-(

If anything changes, we'll update this thread.

Hello,

This really is a deal breaker and stops me from going Premium.

Just fyi: To send an SMS to a Do Not Disturb listed number in India you need to send a "Transactional SMS" and NOT "Bulk SMS". Looks like you are using "Bulk SMS" which won't get delivered to any DnD listed number in India.

All other services like Google, Facebook, Banks etc. uses Transactional SMS.

Thanks.

Hello Abbas,

We have contacted our SMS provider about it and they've said that they won't send our reminders as "transactional SMS" or "authorization codes" as these are reserved by the Indian government for messages that are actually for real transactions, that is - to authorize a payment with a code or authorize a login etc.

Our SMS provider is not willing to take the risk to classify our reminders this way and potentially not be able to make business in India anymore if they're caught :-(

So far, we couldn't find any other provider that would be willing to do this.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply.

I understand that the risk to operate a Transactional SMS is high for the SMS provider. They might be blocked by Indian telecom regulators.

However, many non-government web apps (like WhatsApp, Google, Facebook etc.) do this.

To make this happen you have to submit some documentation and undertaking to your SMS provider that the SMS being sent from Todoist are not marketing SMSes but notifications and transactional in nature. Also, you will have to make all users agree (by providing a checkbox near the field where they enter their mobile numbers) that Todoist will be sending notifications and reminders to their mobile and that they should have no objection to it. Once you make the user agree on these terms, your transactional SMS will be legal in India and both you and your SMS service provider will be safe.

Check what Nexmo is doing -> https://www.nexmo.com/india/

There are many many apps in India using Transactional SMS without a hitch. Perhaps you might want to tie up with an Indian SMS provider for indian customers.

Thanks.

Abbas,

Thank you for this information, though we're unsure if we're willing to take this risk either :-( After all, our reminders are definitely not what the regulators had in mind when they introduced transactional messages.

I suspect that the other big companies may have any special deals that allows them to send them such notifications? Either way, we appreciate your feedback, I'll pass it to our admins and we'll see what we can do :-)

David

Hi David,

I don't think other companies have any special deals. Any company (big or small) can send transactional SMS in India by just providing the right documentation to the SMS service provider.

I have my own small app developed and running where I send notifications to the residents of my apartment and I had no problem. I just had to submit the proper documentation to my SMS service provider http://www.fastalerts.in/ and they set me up for Transactional SMS.

Anyways, I understand that using a different service provide for just one country might not be feasible for you. But remember that most of the Todoist users in India will probably have their mobile numbers listed in DnD :(.

Thanks.
