In order to link a message to a task, you need to use one of our plugins. In case of using GMail, you'll need a plugin for Chrome, Firefox or "Todoist Anywhere" for any other browser, but if you're using an email client, then unfortunately, we only support Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird right now.

As an alternative, instead of linking emails as tasks, you could try to forward them to your Todoist projects. This Todoist Premium feature doesn't require any plugin and you can read a detailed explanation on how it works and how it compares to the other option in our latest blog post: http://todoist.com/blog/2013/01/zero-inbox-policy-with-todoist/
