Offline use on Mac not really working
I was about to purchase a Todoist premium account after testing it for a while. One of the features that really appealed to me was having offline access since I travel all the time, and work on planes or at client sites where I have no Internet access. I tested this functionality using the Mac App (v2.5) and had the following issues:
1) If the app was already started when the connection was lost, it continued to work. However, if the app is started without an Internet connection (like on an airplane), just a blank screen is displayed. Am I doing something wrong?
2) Even worse than not being able to start the app is losing work if the app is closed while there is no connection. I added some tasks while there was no connection, then closed the app (Command-Q) when I was done. I restarted the connection, reopened the app, and the changes I had made while offline were gone. This is a total showstopper, as loss of battery power, system reset, or system shutdown would cause all offline work to be lost. Again, am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?
Any suggestions to how to use the service when disconnected from the Internet for an extended period without risk of data loss? The Android app is not an answer - while good for checking off a task or adding an inbox task to process later, adding dozens of tasks while planning a project, for example, would be way too clunky using that interface and input mechanism.
Unfortunately, this is a limitation of the Mac app. You could try to open the full web-app at http://todoist.com and any HTML5-compatible browser will also allow you to work offline with it. Some browsers (Chrome) should even allow you to access it while already disconnected if using this URL: https://todoist.com/app?v=82
None of the changes you make while offline should be lost.
Alternatively, if you don't want to use the Android or iPhone app (which offer full offline support), you could access this version of the app through the browser: http://todoist.com/m and it should be accessible offline through most modern browsers.
Note - it's required to log in while online for the first time through a browser so the app can load into its cache.
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I will try your suggestions in Chrome and see if that works. Hopefully I can figure out something that works, as I love this application otherwise.
Are there any plans for a native Mac app with full offline support?
The current solution makes it easy to keep track of your tasks across all devices as it's syncing any changes you make instantly, but we will surely consider adding better offline support for all our apps in the future.
Having no full offline support (as advertised in a misleading way) is a showstopper for me. The https://todoist.com/app?v=82 is working, but does not offer OS integration like access from menu bar, quick entry shortcuts etc, so this is a 80% work-around, but definitely not the wanted solution.
Sorry to say this ...
