How can I prioritize tasks?
It is critical for me to prioritize tasks. For example, let's say I currently have 5 different tasks to complete. I want to prioritize those 5 tasks in a certain order. If a new task comes in, I may want to prioritize it first in the list or last in the list. I want to be able to constantly modify the priorities. And, simple designations like "high priority" or "low priority" are not granular enough. Is there a way of including a priority designation by number or letter?? This is a critical function for me to using a task management product.
Thanks so much,
To prioritize an existing task, simply right-click on it and choose one of the 4 available priorities. To add a priority while adding a task, you can type !p1, !p2 or !p3 within its name.
To make sure that task are displayed in a certain order on all views, you can add due times to them. For example, a task due "today at 14:10" will be above the task due "today at 14:15".
Of course alternatively you can add labels. To do so, simply type @labelname within the task name. Labels can have any name you want so you can add labels named @p1 or @p6 etc. Clicking on a label shows all tasks from all projects with this label.
I really appreciate the response. I don't want to give the tasks a due time because many tasks I might not get to in a day and should just carry over every day until they are complete. Labels sounds like it might be the answer. Can I add different labels to each task and then have all my tasks displayed in order of the label number (i.e., list all the p1 first then p2 then p3 then p4, etc.)? If there are multiple p1s then does it sort alphabetically?
You can add multiple labels, but tasks won't sort automatically and may be displayed differently in different views.
Basically, in the project view, you can quickly sort all tasks by name, date or priority using the "task actions" menu (gear icon at the top of the list), but on the 7 days view, the order will be by date/time and priority.
If you click on a label to see all tasks that have such label then the list will be displayed sorted by priority then date.
I don't think is actually a solution. In order to sort by priority, I would have to apply one of the 4 colored priority labels. I need more than 4 different levels.
I tried applying a @p1, @p2, @p3 up to @p10 to different tasks. But, when I sort by priority, it doesn't sort. It seems that the "sort by priority" only works when you apply one of the 4 color priority labels - not that @p# label. I can filter to see all of the @p1 tasks, but that isn't useful. I actually want a list of ALL tasks (or tasks in a particular project), but listed in order of priority (with more than 4 priority levels).
Am I missing anything?
Adding a label named "@p1" does not affect the priority. Priorities themselves are different than labels and both are different functions. Unfortunately, it's not possible to sort tasks by the name of its label. We will consider adding such feature in the future and you're welcome to vote for this request in our Votebox: http://todoist.com/Vote/showProposal/207/
For now, the only way to maintain the order of tasks in the 7 days view is by using due times or one of the 4 available priorities.
