Todoist API and the "children" field

I'm currently coding using the API. I have noticed that if I delete a sub-task for instance then the parent task (and ancestors) will have their "children" field updated to reflect the fact that the sub-task is gone. However, when I call the AP/deleteItems method, it deletes my tasks but does not update the children field of their parent and ancestor tasks. If I even want to do this manually and try to use API/updateItem with the correct children field it doesn't do anything with my changes to the that field. Can you help me? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
