Badge Not Updating on iOS

DB

Hello, can you tell me if there is some trick to getting the ToDoist app badge to update correctly? I have it enabled in Notification Center on my iPhone, however the badge doesn't update consistently. I entered a number of tasks that are due today, but there is no badge showing; I even manually opened the ToDoist app, then closed it thinking that would help, but there is still no badge showing. I just have the free account, but could have sworn they used to work properly; is this just a "premium" feature? Please let me know, as I rely heavily on badges to notify me of tasks, even if I don't open the app.

Thanks.

Hello Damion,

I've just tried on multiple accounts - free and Premium with the app opened and closed and it seems to work correctly. It does take a short wile longer in the app is closed, though.

Please tell me - are you connected to the internet when you make the changes and have a stable connection?

Best regards,
David

I entered the tasks yesterday with due dates for today, and they both showed on the iOS app and website respectively. I assumed today I would find a "5" badge on the ToDoist icon (the number of my due tasks), but there was no badge at all. Opened the app, closed it and same thing. This happened on my home WiFi network, as well as here at work on LTE.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Damion,

Please try logging out of the app, then back in again. Any difference?

Thanks,

Damion,

The only badge-related issues we've experienced in the past was linked to having an incorrect time zone set on Todoist and the device the user used it on. It caused the badge to "think" that it's a different day and try to show items due on the other day and if there weren't any - not show the badge at all.

Do you have all time zones set up correctly? Also, does deleting and reinstalling the app make any difference?

David

Ok, the plot thickens; I went to log out, but before I even opened the app, the badge appeared. Did you guys do something on your end?

Basically, I just want the app badge to autmatically update everyday to show how many tasks are due without having to open it. Is this available in ToDoist free or premium versions, or does the app badge sometimes have a mind of it's own regardless of which account you have?

David Trey staff

Damion,

It should show you the combined number of tasks due today and overdue regardless of opening it manually or not even on a free account.

However, if you completely power down your phone, then the background sync won't work and therefore it's possible that as you launch your phone the next day, it will take a short while for it to get the data and update in the background.

David

Yeah, I hadn't powered down the phone, so that's not the culprit. I just moved some tasks to tomorrow, so I'll check the badge again then to see if it works; if so, I'll be a happy camper.

One other question: in order to add notes, it says I would need to upgrade to the premium account. Do the note fields allow for clickable links, phone numbers, email addresses etc?

Damion,

Yes it's a Premium feature. It allows for all types of information such as that, though numbers require mobile apps to accept that type of information.

So, in other words on my iPhone, I would be able to add clickable phone numbers, url's, email addresses etc in the notes area if I upgrade to premium? Wasn't sure what you meant by "though numbers require mobile apps to accept that type of information."

Damion,

Yes, that would be the case. At least I believe that is how it should work with numbers. It varies from platform to platform, as the dialer would need to accept it.

Hey Guys, just wanted to let you know that the app badge did not update again today. Do they only update at certain times of the day, or do I have to manually open the app in order for it to receive information to update? It worked properly for a while yesterday, but today it's not working again.

Hello Damion,

technically, when the app is opened, you will get the updates ASAP. If not, it will indeed only update periodically. How long did you wait after starting your phone?

I never turned my phone off; I leave it plugged in and on overnight as I also use it for my alarm clock. I would assume the badge should have more than enough time to auto update during this period right?

David Trey staff

Damion,

Indeed it should be up-to-date in this case, unless you're using any apps to manage battery life and, for example, disable network connectivity if the phone is unused, force-close apps in the background or prevent them to connect or utilize the iOS 7 background sync. Is that the case?

No, unfortunately it isn't. I have two other to-do apps that have badges that auto update every day without having to open them first, so I'm really perplexed as to why this doesn't work with ToDoist.

Guys, badges still aren’t working for me. The only way to “activate” them is to open the app, complete a task, then they show up. Tried for two days, and this was the only way to get them to populate. Possible bug?

I have the same trouble.
My timezone is set at Asia/Taipei.
Both of my iPhone and website are in the same timezone.
When I open the app at 6:00am, there is no badge.
When I open the app at 9:00am,the badge comes.
I've try for 3 days.
Is the issue related with the timezone setting?

Hello Damion,

This issue can be caused either by a wrong time zone or corrupt caching. Assuming that you have the same correct zone on your device and within Todoist's Settings, please try to delete and reinstall the app to make sure its cache is cleared and let me know if the issue persists.

My badges stopped showing up after the most recent update (from March 25th, version 8.1.1). However, I re-installed it, and they started working again. I even added some tasks and marked them off, and the badges updated appropriately. Just figured I'd pass the info along, and I'll update this thread if it stops working again.

Thanks!

Nicholas, the problem for me is that when I have tasks that are due in the future, i.e. tomorrow, the badge count doesn't auto update unless I physically open the app first, and then close it. For instance, I had one task that was due this morning, but there wasn't a number showing on the Todoist icon. I opened the app, then closed it, and the "1" subsequently showed up on the icon. The badges should update automatically without having to manually open the Todoist app; there are other productivity apps that can do this, so I'm surprised that a larger productivity app like Todoist cannot accomplish this.

Ah I see, that makes sense. So basically, I'll have to wait until tomorrow (because I have items due then) to see if the badges update appropriately. I will put a reminder in Todoist to check this :)

Nick

Hi Damion,

I checked this morning, and got the exact same issue as you. I had 4 tasks due still for the day when I went to bed (well before midnight). When I woke up this morning, my badge still had a 4 indicator. After opening the app and closing it, it jumped up to 23 which was the 4 plus the 19 due today.

The only saving grace in my opinion is that because there are no widgets on iOS, you have to open the app every day to see your docket anyway. So the workaround is built into the general workflow of the app, in my opinion. However, it is still really annoying, especially if you're a premium subscriber like me.

Also, after being on Android and then switching to iOS, I noticed some features blatantly missing on the iOS version some of which are just due to platform limitations, but some that seem like they could be implemented. For example, on Android, you can receive a push notification every morning at a given time which says "you have ___ tasks due, tap to see them" or something like that. Not sure why that option is missing on iOS?

Thanks,
Nick

Nick,

Same thing here; I've got 5 tasks due today, but no badges showed up. To make matters worse, even after I opened the app, the badge indicator did not show up; I just don't understand why they can't get this figured out. Regardless, there are other paid (and free) iOS productivity apps out there that feature reliable auto-updating badges, so I think it's time for me to move on. I've been going back and forth with Todoist for a few months about this specific issue and am no closer to a solution than when I initially started; it's very frustrating. Todoist unquestionably makes a beautiful product, but it's "feature" set is too unreliable to meet my productivity needs.

One thing that might help - Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app (again). I noticed yesterday that I wasn't getting any badges after the most recent update from Tuesday. After reinstalling, it worked again (well, back to how it was working before, anyway).

Nick,

I did the uninstall and reinstall yesterday afternoon in the hopes that would help, but nothing changed. I've actually deleted and reinstalled Todoist at least 5-6 times throughout this process, and at this point, I'm kinda over the whole thing. My biggest question for Todoist is if it takes more effort and energy to actually get consistent functionality out of your productivity app, doesn't that defeat the purpose of using it?

Ah okay. I was hoping that would get you back to where you were before.

Haha, that is ironic that a productivity app is killing your productivity. In general though I have been happy with Todoist, and the specific combination of features is not something I've been able to find elsewhere. I think their scope of cross-platform compatibility and good modern design makes it a good choice. However, I have had issues, some of which took only a day to fix, and some of which took months to fix.

Thanks,
Nick
