Show Sub Project's Tasks when viewing at parent level...
Hi,
The one and only shortcoming for me with ToDoIst is the lack of ability to see the child projects and tasks when looking at a parent or ancestor project.
Similar to this question:
https://todoist.com/Support/showQuestion/117/
I want to use ToDoIst in such a way that I can manage many many tasks in a number of logical groupings and sub groupings. Eg a Project heirarchy might look like this...
Consulting Project
> Sub Project - Research Phase
>> Task List 1
>> Task List 2
> Sub Project - Analysis Phase
>> Task List 1
>> Task List 2
> Sub Project - Recommendation Phase
>> Task List 1
>> Task List 2
I have no way at the moment to look at all the tasks for Phase 1 of a project on one page.
I would really like this and am happy to pay for it, at the moment its a deal breaker for me though.
Regards,
Tom Jackson

This is exactly what I thought was the purpose of being able to add sub-projects!
I don't understand why I would spend time organizing sub-projects if I have to click through the hierarchy just to see if there are any tasks that need done.
There should be a way see all of the tasks related to a parent project and see a total task count related to that parent project in the sidebar.
I think most people would find this useful, especially if you are using Todoist for both business and personal tasks. You don't want to see business tasks at home or vice versa, but you don't want to have to create a separate account for all of that either.
(I understand labels might solve this problem to a degree, but - being as you can't search within specific projects either - I could easily see myself ending up with lots of annoying labels on each task.)

I totally agree. At the very least it should be an option in preferences or have a button to toggle between this view and the current one on the parent folder page.

I agree that this would be a very useful feature. Being able to see the tasks in sub projects listed under parents just makes more sense than the current implementation.

Any staff comment on this? The more I use Todoist the more I feel this feature is needed. I think the best way to implement this would be to have a project with sub-projects display them together when they are collapsed, then if you want to look at the sub-projects separately they can be expanded. Also I have noticed other suggestions asking for the same thing.

Hello RJ,
thank you for your feedback, we appreciate it.
Please note - all feature requests in our Votebox are being revised by the staff and this whole section is being monitored by the developers.
Since this is an anticipated feature, we will eventually implement it into Todoist. When it goes into development, everyone who posted in this thread will receive a notification about a status change of this request to "In progress".
Best regards,
David

Thanks for the reply David. Good to know this is coming.

Thank for the fast response and the link.
I am also available for beta testing the feature, and any help related to this in anyway.
Keep up the great work.

I would like to share one concern I have with this feature request, as I separate my tasks in a slightly different manner.
I currently have two master projects: Work and Personal. For these I've used the "*Home" syntax as I will not be adding tasks at this level; in those cases, it most definitely makes sense to see tasks from sub-projects.
However, when I create a sub-project of a project in Work like so:
> *Work
>> Major Project
>>> Low priority, related supporting project
>> Smaller, completely unrelated to above project A
>> Smaller, completely unrelated to above project B
Here when I click "Major Project" I do _not_ want to see the tasks of the related, but non-essential project.
It's an interesting design challenge. I use my structure above for a volunteer role I hold:
> *Personal
>> Main Volunteer Tasks
>>> Plans for Improvement I Can Assist with at the Non-Profit
In this case there are times where I would like to view both the "Main Volunteer Tasks" and "Plans for Improvement I Can Assist With" so that I can assess where my time would make the largest impact.

Whe will this feature be implemented? 81 Votes and this is a basic feature to create subproject.

TODOIST rocks! You guys have done an amazing job creating a truly minimal experience (and I don't just mean lots of white space--I mean intuitive, effortless, Zen). Congrats and back pats.
I want to add my vote to this section. To keep with the minimalist, intuitive web functionality, I would expect clicking the level above should generally show everything in levels below, sort of like how the file tree in most OS explorers toggle. That would be a very useful from where I sit.
I know it's on the list, and I know you have only so many hours in a day. Keep up the good work!

The #1 reason I left RTM was because I needed nested projects and subprojects.
Being able to make a task with a * is a huge plus too.
So yah...this would be great too.
Thanks!
I too would also love to see this feature.
I am using todoist for school, and I have:
-School Project
--Class 1 Subproject
--Class 2 Subproject
It would make todoist much easier to use if I could view my tasks for all my classes at once.
Thanks

I support this notion.
A click on the parent should show all children.
Sumit Kar on Oct 12, 2012 - 21:52
This is a must have feature and makes sense, and saves time to see from overview perspective as to what's going on in a project.
please have it asap kindly.
thanks

Like a previous poster, I moved from RTM for Todoist's subproject capabilities but not being able to view all defeats the purpose of having it.
Please do add it in the next version thanks!
Like many of the others who have posted here I use Todoist to manage both personal and work related projects. Having a way to create sub-projects that roll-up to a parent project, or tasks within a sub project as discussed here would be awesome.
Shiri Dori-Hacohen on Nov 20, 2012 - 13:21
Just wanted to add my vote here as this would be a very valuable feature. Especially if it was added with a toggle as mentioned above, so you have the option to view both the entire subtree hierarchy or just the contents of the high-level project itself.
Nick Johnson-Hill on Nov 21, 2012 - 09:38
Yes please, this would be very helpful.
Robert Wojciechowski on Dec 12, 2012 - 22:01
This is preventing me from jumping over to Todoist. Waiting... :)

Mobile App - Sub Tasks
Great program and appreciate the continued development!
I would request that the Sub Tasks be able to collapse in the mobil app.
Thanks
Bill Offley on Dec 31, 2012 - 09:48
I also like the program... and have paid for premium...
But... I did not realize that the mobile iphone app does not allow for expanding and minimizing indent levels like the windows product does... this is a very desirable feature to manage tasks, subtasks, and projects....

Hello Bill,
We're working on improvements that will make sub-task and sub-project management much better on the mobile apps.

+1 For this feature. One way to do this whilst still having the current setup would be to have the view depend on whether the parent project is expanded: When expanded, show just the directly assigned tasks (as per current functionality). When parent task collapsed, show in "view all" style, with a list of sub-projects and their tasks.
Waiting for this feature. Please implement.
Diogo Barreto on Jan 18, 2013 - 15:07
David, when do you think this will be implemented?
David Trey
on Jan 18, 2013 - 16:06
Hello Diogo,
Unfortunately, we can't give you any specific estimate. We're working on multiple features right now for both the web- and the mobile-apps, but we will surely consider implementing this feature as well.
Best regards,
David
Jason Beyers on Feb 05, 2013 - 17:34
Would love to see this feature. It's difficult to get visibility across sub-projects without it.
Thanks!
Jason Beyers on Feb 07, 2013 - 16:04
Will move away from Todoist if this feature isn't in the pipeline. Lack of this feature defeats the purpose of subprojects in my opinion. I absolutely love Todoist otherwise, but it really really needs this.
As part of this feature it would make sense that I could search/query by project and see all tasks under that project (which I can't do at all right now). Ideally, I'd be able to not only just click on this project and see all it's tasks, but to search for project as a query and see all of the tasks under it:
^Work, overdue, 7 days
to see all tasks anywhere under the Work project (or sub projects) or
+Work, overdue, 7 days to see only the tasks in the Work project (no sub projects)
Obviously the actual characters (^ and +) used are up for discussion.
Thanks,
David

Maddening that this isn't the default functionality here
Sumit Kar on Mar 09, 2013 - 00:07
need this badly, does not make sense to have, why then have sub projects its same to have everything as a separate project...
please get this happening asap kindly

I would really appreciate this too! Very disappointed when I discovered this was not possible! I suppose labels are the alternative, but much more awkward.
Luke Abbott on Mar 22, 2013 - 06:36
Right now I keep bouncing between sub projects, parent tasks, labeling all tasks in a project with a matching label, etc.
This would really help especially if I could run queries on "> Sub Project - Research Phase"
Consulting Project
> Sub Project - Research Phase (query on this)
>> Task List 1
>> Task List 2
>> Sub Project - To do with Research
>>>Task List
> Sub Project Other
And See:
> Sub Project - Research Phase
>> Task List 1
>> Task List 2
>> Sub Project - To do with Research
>>>Task List

I'm about to give up on Todoist because of this.
I wrote a similar proposal to this and I gave up last week and move to trello. Todoist was my last best hope for traditional todo managers. I've moved to Trello and though it has some growing to do, I have loving it.
Robert Köhler on Apr 03, 2013 - 06:35
That is absolutely right: sub tasks are hard to manage and use at all. Tried to make a shopping list and ended writing the items into a note.
Currently it looks like they are independent tasks just with different kind of intendation floating around.
They have to be attached to their parents when moving them or have to be displayed (even be collapsed) wherever the parent is visible.
This somehow is the same behaviour for projects, but that's not what the vote is about.
David Trey
on Apr 03, 2013 - 06:54
Robert,
Sub-tasks are attached to their parent and you can move the parent along with all sub-tasks.
To create a sub-task structure correctly, please try to do the following:
1. Click on "Add task" at the bottom of the list in any project.
2. Add a task (called "Shopping").
3. When you save it with Enter, you'll see a new input field. Use Ctrl+RightArrow once to indent it by one level and type the name of the first item of your shopping list.
4. When you save it with Enter, the next input field will already be on the same indent level so you can simply type one item after another.
When you're done adding tasks, use Esc to close the new input field and you'll see that you can collapse and expand the task structure below the parent task and drag & drop the whole structure if you "grab" it by the parent task.
Best regards,
David

I'd like to see the following re: project / sub-project and [task count]:
rolled up:
> project 1 [10]
expanded:
v project 1 [3]
. project 1.1 [5]
. project 1.2 [2]
In the rolled up view, clicking project 1 would list all 10 task in this project and all the sub-projects.
In the expanded view, clicking on project 1 would only list the 3 tasks at the top level.
With this, Todoist would be perfect (especially if it also had the querying capability of RTM).
Iain MacDonald on Apr 21, 2013 - 13:55
Agree completely with Steve. I found it counter intuitive to set up sub projects and tasks as below:
v Project 1
- Sub project 1 (2)
- Sub project 2 (5)
- Sub project 3 (3)
But when it's rolled up and shown as:
> Project 1 (10)
To select that in the left hand menu, but see:
Project 1
No tasks
Instead of the 10 tasks listed in sub projects of Project 1.
Skylex on Apr 23, 2013 - 00:33
Yes I agree with all, we need this option, the sub projects need to have an option to see all of the main project :)
Skylex on Apr 23, 2013 - 00:38
I just make my vote, now there are 402, this post was 1 year ago, Is time todoist add this option, I love todoist thats why I pay the premium subscription but I really need this sub project options to be more organized, I hope this will be added soon, there are other task manager that have this option, but I really don't want to change Todoist, so please hear us todoist team!!
An alternative appoach would be to add a feature that automatically assigns a label to all tasks created within a project or its sub projects.
Then I could view all home-related projects in one view by filtering by label.
Basically a feature that allows for a default label to be assigned to all items in a project hierachy. This would solve several organization challenges I am facing.
Absolutely agree with it, this is a very important feature!
liya.hoshi on May 06, 2013 - 19:19
Really don't understand why this seemingly simple yet crucial feature has still yet to be implemented. PLEASE GET THIS DONE!
Lance Parsons on May 09, 2013 - 16:55
There are various methods to achieve what people want here, which is to be able to see all tasks associated with a parent project, ideally sorted by subproject. This would make sub-projects MUCH more useful (really, useful at all) and would be a huge improvement to Todoist. Any update from the staff?
michel kant on May 10, 2013 - 03:43
really want this feature. Adding on all of this is that the mentioned folder on the home page could be a clickable breadcrumb.
Mark Salam on May 19, 2013 - 01:09
Just signed up for premium. Without this basic ability I'm left wondering why. It's just a given that when I select a parent I want to see everything under the parent with multiple sort and group options but most importantly group by project. I keep trying it because I can't believe it's not there. Now what. I don't think I can use this app.
