Thunderbird Add-On does not work with Thunderbird Conversations

Hi. The todoist thunderbird addon experiences issues when it is installed with the Thunderbird Conversations addon. Specifically, the "Add Email as Task" button does not work properly. The task no longer links to a valid email. I could try to explain the error in more detail, but it should be easy to reproduce the error. The author of the Thunderbird Conversations add-on notes that several add-ons fail to properly work with Thunderbird when messages are displayed as conversations. Some relevant info can be found here: http://blog.xulforum.org/index.php?post/2010/11/27/Thunderbird-Conversations-plugins

The Thunderbird Conversations addon provides not just one but several rather useful functions and it would be difficult to stop using this add-on in order to be able to use the todoist add-on. I was wondering if there has been or will be any work on this conflict. Thanks!

Hello Ben,

Unfortunately, we can't develop our app with other add-ons in mind. It works correctly on many versions of Thunderbird and if the author of the "Conversations" add-on admits that his software makes other add-ons fail then we can't adjust our software based on the design choices of other plugins.

Hi David,

I certainly understand this viewpoint in general, and obviously I don't feel entitled to action on your part, however there are a few factors at play here worth mentioning.

As I am sure you know, official new feature development for Thunderbird was recently halted. Consider that the "Conversations" add-on belongs to a very limited class of add-ons (e.g. Lightning) whose features are important enough that future official integration would be likely if official development were still ongoing. When an add-on approaches this level of importance, it can be reasonable to resolve conflicts. You will note that there are nearly 100,000 users of the "Conversations" add-on. Also, several other important extension authors such as Enigmail have seen fit to add code for compatibility. The author added an API as well to assist with compatibility; it is not simply a matter of reckless coding leading to breaking standard features. Ordinarily, I would agree that it is vastly unreasonable to expect you to test compatibility with other add-ons, but I would submit that an exception might be reasonable in this case.

I also would be happy to see that too. I have been using thunderbird w/ conversations for quite a while and it's a pity that todoist cannot recognize the emails in it...

Another suggestion would be to calibrate the content of the toolbox because in the case of tasks with 'long descriptions' the lack of the line breaks makes their 'setting' inaccessible without resizing the width of the toolbox...

I think "Conversations" add-on is essential for Thunderbird users. Please, consider making your product compatible with it.

Cheers,
