Can a task be created without being assigned to a project?
I want to quickly enter several tasks. Many times these tasks are small and not part of a larger project or I would rather just enter them all in first, then (optionally) assign them to a project later (sound like GTD?).
Is this possible and if so, how can I do it?

Although tasks cannot be entered without being within a project, you could create a project called "Inbox", enter it and if you use the "Add task" link at the bottom of a project, once you hit Enter to save the task, a new input box opens allowing you to add multiple tasks very quickly.
Once you enter all tasks, you can simply distribute them among your projects using the drag & drop feature. If you hover over a task (while you're in a project), you'll see a small handle icon on its left side. You can use this icon to "grab" this task and drag & drop it to a different project.
It would be helpful to have a DEFAULT project called "inbox" where unassigned tasks land. Having to choose a project slows down task entry. (Or just to be able for ME to choose which project is default.)
I'm following a GTD workflow, entering tasks should be SUPER fast, only later when I review them and either do immediately OR assign to a project should I HAVE to give them a project.
If you want to add a series of tasks, you can do it very quickly from within a project. If you enter the "Inbox" project first and use the "Add task" link at the bottom of your task list (not the "Quick Add" feature, you'll be able to type in multiple tasks and each time you hit Enter, the task will be saved and another input field opened making the process very fast.
Afterwards, you could redistribute some tasks to other projects simply by dragging and dropping them to the target project.

I wholeheartedly agree that having to select a project every time is a pain. I know I can add multiple tasks from a project view, but I spend most of my time in the "today" view. The current workflow adds extra tasks, and this is stopping me from switching from Remember The Milk. My RTM premium subscription is up soon, and I'd love to switch, but small issues like this are stopping me.
A default project for new tasks would save so much hassle. Please please add it??
You never have to choose a project when you use the "Quick Add" feature as one project is always pre-set. By default, it's the first project on the list so if you would create a project called "Inbox" and drag & drop it to the top of your project list, it will be shown by default when you use this feature.
Alternatively, as you've noticed, you can simply enter a project and add tasks to it. This takes even less clicks than the Quick Add option if you would select the project from there (click on the project name, then hit "a" to start adding tasks).

Hi David. Thanks for the response - apologies that I was not clear... it's in the iPhone app that this behaviour is so frustrating as (unlike in the quick add box on the website, as you point out) there is no project selected by default.

Yeah would also love that, just a quick add button where I can enter my task in one line, which would be automatically added to default project for later review ...
