Hello Michael,

with the launch of the HTML5 version allowing offline storage and the upcoming mobile apps, in order to be able to provide the best performance and reliable service, we've had to set certain limitations.

The current limits are: 80 projects and 150 tasks within a project. This allows you to have a total of 12,000 tasks. Please note that this limit only counts active items. If you archive a project, it will not count towards the limit.

This is just horrid, I us it to store my projet idas and now I have mor than 80 and I have to abandon using todoist after more than 6yrs of using it. This is very frustrating and should really not be done.

For now, please note that this limit only counts active projects. You can archive projects anytime and can store an unlimited amount of archived projects, but only 80 of them can be active at a time.

Hi David,

I would add my voice to Frank's concerns. I am a long term user and 80 is a small number to limit the number of projects to. We are in a world of unlimited cloud storage and Todoist is heading backwards with this decision.

After having spent the day hacking out my project list into excel temporarily until I can find another way of storing them, I have whittled my project list by half which I count to be just less than 80 but I am still getting the error message that I can't add another project. Can I get a check of how many projects I have please? If I am going to be limited to 80 it would be nice to see the count displayed somewhere.

Hello Darren,

We're sorry for the inconvenience. With Todoist Premium, you can archive any project and can have an unlimited amount of archived projects which won't count towards the limit.

Also, to help us understand how you're using our service so that 80 projects aren't enough, we would greatly appreciate if you could briefly explain in what context you're using projects.

Hi David,

As an update, I note from the link provided above that the limit is for projects and not sub projects which means [1] there's definitely something wrong with the limitation as I don't have anything close to 80 projects as I was counting sub-projects as well and [2] if this is correct, I have unnecessarily removed nearly half my data from my account.

Darren,

this limitation affect all active projects and sub-projects (that is - non-archived projects and sub-projects).

Please try to log out, clear your browser's cache and offline data storage, reload the browser and log back in to see if you still see the notification about the limit. If you do - try to use a different browser and let me know which 2 browsers you've used.

Hi David,

In answer to your question. I loosely apply gtd. My top level projects are (were) Inbox, Items, Projects, Future, Reference. Under the first two there were individual task entries and under the others I would have projects and subprojects broken down into 6 personal categories. Today I removed Reference which was my largest project and a few other parts in an effort to get back under 80 projects but I am unclear now as to whether what I have are all projects or a combo of projects and subprojects.

I attempted your suggestion but still get the error message. I count 77 projects and sub-projects. I used Chrome and Firefox.

Darren,

Just to clarify - you mean 77 projects and then 77 sub-projects or is 77 the total number of all your projects? Also, have you cleared both the cache and the offline storage data (it's often not being deleted in Chrome if you try to clear all browsing data and has to be removed manually in Advanced Settings -> Content Settings -> All cookies and site data).

In order to lower the amount of projects, please note that you could sometimes use labels instead. Clicking on a label displays all tasks sharing this label which could replace breaking down some projects. You can also use sub-tasks. If a project contains 10 tasks and then 3-4 other sub-projects with few tasks, all of this data could be a task tree which can have up to 4 indent levels.

One more thing that you could try is to use the mobile site http://todoist.com/m and see if it allows you to add a project and let me know if it does.

Hello Darren,

Please tell me - do you have any project categories set up (those with an asterisk * in front of the project name)? Those also count towards the limit and if you have 3 of them, they will cause this issue.

Yes I have many project categories. I don't recall noting a limit and I have always used a lot of categories. Are you telling me that there has recently been a limit put on the number of categories and this limit is two?

There is no limit on categories. However, categories count as projects which means if you count all your projects, please include categories as well as the total number of projects (incl. categories) is 80.

Darren,

I've mentioned 3 categories because according to our Administrator you have 80 projects, therefore I suspected that you may have 3 categories in addition to your projects.

At this point, the only option to make sure which count is correct, it would be great if you could move tasks from one project (preferably one with not many tasks) to another and delete the source project to see if you'll still see the error message.

Please note that you can edit the name of a category, remove the asterisk at the front and then move the tasks to this project for testing purposes.

The good news is your Admin is correct. The bad news is I can't count. I'm grateful for the check on my account and I hope at least some of this posting is of help to others.

In review however, I would still consider the limit of 80 to either be self defeating for the Todoist project or at the very least too small for people who build complex project trees.
