Email Body not in notes

HC

Recently I began using the Email function and noticed that when I forward an email the body is no where to be found as a note. Any idea what can be happening? I've checked this through the Mac app and the web both with the same results.

Hello Harly,

Please try to forward one test email that does not have a signature, doesn't have any attachments, just some "Test text" in its body and a short subject and if this message also arrives with no body converted to a task note, please forward this email to david@doist.io and brendon@doist.io

Plain text email was received fine, when I forward an email with my signature only my signature appears the rest of the message is not there. When I forward a message and remove my signature only the subject comes through.

Harly,

Please forward an email with your signature to us, we'd need to see how it's formatted and what kind of separator between the text and the signature is used.

I am also having this problem. I have an HTML Signature and anything I forward is not showing up in the notes, only the subject. I have even removed my signature and just sent the body of the original email and it still did not go through.

If I just type some text above the forward email only that text shows up, not the rest of the email.

I am using a Mac and have tired this with Airmail, the Mac Mail client, and Outlook 2011 and the forward items always have the body of the email removed from the nots box.

Also not working for iPad or iOS devices. Forwarded email bodies are not showing up.

a hint for your support staff -- if I "redirect" the mail instead of
"forwarding" it, then it all works as it should.

the obvious conclusion is that the mail filter you use does not always
interpret the quoting correctly; might also not be able to handle all
the various forms of "Begin Forwarded Message" attributions.

Hi together,
today I have a new issue with forwarding mails: The server bluntly refuses the message.

Yes, I can add the mail in Postbox also as task but then I have access only on my Mac. Forwarding it would mean to have the mail-body as note to the task on any other device and if this would work that would be really nice.

Hope you'll have a fix soon.

Hi *

I have a clue to the problem: it has to do with quoting. I "redirected" a mail to Todoist; this mail was a reply to another mail so there were pieces in that mail that were quoted (attributed). Those pieces are missing in the Todoist task note. To be clear:

A piece of the original mail source (apple mail, View->Message->Raw Source):

Hoi

ik weet niet wat er stuk is, of naccuse of je handleiding ..=20

ik probeerde UNIX in verschillende vormen, omdat in de handleiding voor =
naccuse is er niets wat =91aggregator=92 heet :-)

.... and now what shows up in the note attached to the task:

Hoi

ik weet niet wat er stuk is, of naccuse of je handleiding ..

ik probeerde UNIX in verschillende vormen, omdat in de handleiding voor naccuse is er niets wat ‘aggregator’ heet

Notice that everything preceded by ">" characters has been filtered out of the message. Many email clients quote a forwarded message with ">" characters. This is probably why forwarded messages are not working for so many people.

Jeff,

We will try testing this, but to be clear. You are saying if the forwarded email has no quotes "" in it at all, as in the quote symbols, it works without issue? Does it happen even if the quotes are not surrounding any words?

Brendon

Jeff premium
Replied on May 22, 2014 - 18:17

Hi Brendon,

Sorry for the confusion, I am using what may be "unix speak". What I mean is, that when a mail client program is used to forward or to reply to a mail, it includes the original message. In order to make a distinction between the original message being forwarded or replied to, it very often prefixes lines from the original message with a special character. This is a process called "quoting" the original message but has nothing to do with quotes "".

In the example provided, the lines that start with ">" (greater than characters) are the "quoted" message. These lines have disappeared in the version attached to the todoist task. Hence I suspect that whatever mechanism you use to transfer mails into tasks, is somewhere along the chain, removing any lines that start with a greater than character >

Given that most email clients, when forwarding an email, will prefix every single line of the original email with a greater than > character, this could easily explain why the forwarded messages are empty. It also explains why the signature lines would show up, as the signature lines are not part of the original message being forwarded so those lines are not prefixed with a greater than > character and hence not removed from the message and hence DO show up in the Todoist task attachment.

If everyone can confirm...

- Which clients are you using to send the emails, do they all fail for you?
- Are you forwarding a new mail, or a reply, as in does it have quotations in it?
- If you send an email directly to it, not forwarding a mail (new mail) does it happen?

Hi,

I've tested using both apple mail and the gmail web interface. The constant factor is the ">" character at the beginning of a line. This is what apple mail uses as standard to prefix forwarded mails, as well as to show attribution of replied-to mails.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't matter whether you send something, redirect something with replied-to text in it, forward something ... anything that results in a ">" character at the start of a line will get stripped out.

Lots of windows mail clients use HTML formatting, and in HTML format, the ">" character is escaped. I suspect that whatever Todoist is using to parse mail may be assuming certain HTML behavior and hence not dealing correctly with and un-escaped ">" characters.

If your test / debugging / development team doesn't have enough info to solve this now, you should consider getting a new team ;-)

J
Jeff premium
Replied on May 25, 2014 - 11:22

one more piece of info : it appears to only be a ">" character at the start of a line. A line in the email like:

this line contains a quote character >

comes thru just fine. A line like

> this line contains a quote character too

will disappear from the mail when viewed as the Todoist task note.

I have to say that I'm seriously disappointed in how this issue, which has been around for such a long time, has been addressed. Instead of fixing this problem that is crucial for the workflow, there were resources dedicated to new features that do not add any real value (last bigger update) IMHO. I was forced to find a replacement for todoist and had to make the switch. This basically leads me to canceling my premium membership now, which is a shame because todoist is such a promising app. I simply disagree with the development and support strategy of todoist.

The thing that worries me the most about how this issue is being addressed, is what it says about the troubleshooting / support / testing / maintenance team. I did not say "development team" because the core of Todoist is relatively trouble-free. I have yet to experience a service outage and the system does not lose tasks -- somebody obviously knows what they are doing at Todoist. The same cannot be said for the troubleshooting / support / testing / maintenance team (TSTM for short) ... either there is no TSTM team, or they are rather inexperienced -- I can't believe finding this would take more than a day of full-time effort, and certainly a week should be sufficient to handle even the most contorted of fixes. I am basing my estimates on watching my own team of 5 engineers doing (part time) TSTM for global distributed computing services.

If there is ever a big problem at Todoist, major service outage, I see no reason to expect that it would be addressed quickly. Does anybody have examples of big Todoist problems that were fixed quickly? I haven't been using it that long.

J
Jeff premium
Replied on May 27, 2014 - 18:54

PS this is not a potshot at Brendon -- often the face of the TSTM to the outside world has that as their primary job, not actually doing the TSTM! They are also often instructed to be relatively neutral in their answers (say "expectation management" three times real fast) -- my previous post was based on my own diagnosis of the cause of this problem (> characters), how long it took me to make that diagnosis, watching my team handle similar problems, and how long this particular bug has been unsolved -- NOT on how Brendon has communicated with us here in this thread.

Jeff,

The issue is sometimes we can't reproduce, which we need to be able to do, sometimes its because we are working on other issues. That being said, most issues are resolved quite soon, and issues such as we are having today are rare.

I will bug the developers about this again, and re-explain the situation and it shouldn't be much longer.

Hi Brendon,

Surprised you can't reproduce it. For me it's 100 percent reproducible:

make sure emails are not being sent in HTML in your email client
send a mail to the todoist project
in that email include at least one line that starts with a > character. the line really needs to start with that character, this is not the same as the character showing up in position 1 of the text box due to line wrap!!

if HTML format is turned off and the > character really is the first character of a text line in the email, for me that line NEVER shows up in the todoist task notes version of the email. never.

Okay. I've found a workaround and something that may help staff to figure it out. For those of you using Mac Email:

1) Click on Preferences
2) Go to "Composing" as shown on the bar above
3) Go to "Responding" on that page
4) Uncheck "Increase quote level"

This worked for me. I've included a screen shot to clarify. I'm now able to forward to Todoist and I've only had to sacrifice the indent of past messages in my threads. Until Staff figures out the reason for the stripping out of these indented messages, it'll work for me.

I hope this helps.

Hi Brendon,

Your choice of words suggests that you are not aware of the scope of this issue. Changing the mailer's setting for quoting does *NOT* resolve the issue; it LIMITS the EFFECT of the issue somewhat.

Original emails come through OK when the quoting settings are changed. However if someone forwards me a message, or I want to forward a mail conversation to Todoist, changing my quoting settings does not help, as these mails are coming at least partly from other people, who are using normal quoting settings. In such a case parts of the mail will be missing when forwarded to Todoist and there's nothing I can do about it short of deep-editing the format of the mail before clicking the send button.

This issue is NOT resolved. For three months already!!

Those words "seems to resolve the issue" are yours, not mine, and based on those words of yours, I wrote my post about there being no resolution as of yet. Since you know that the issue is not resolved, I suggest you avoid saying that something seems to resolve it. That in turns avoids the incentive for me to tell you something you already know, and waste my time posting! I am already wasting enough by being careful how I forward mails to Todoist because of the unresolved issue in question!

It's particularly frustrating when I forward an email to my Todoist Inbox that was sent to me without a subject line. In cases like that, not only is there no message in the forwarded email, but now I'm stuck trying to figure out what email message it was that I was supposed to follow up on! Yes, I could add details in the subject line when forwarding, but that really takes away from workflow and is far from being a "productive" way of getting things done.

I now also notice that his guy is attaching spreadsheet files and images for downloading. I know most of you know better, but to those unfamiliar with these issues, I strongly recommend that nobody downloads these. They can contain viruses, even the images.

Bruce, you're continuously posting these messages here, please change your email address, block this one from forwarding spam to us as everyone involved in this thread is receiving this. Let us know if you can deal with this on your end, otherwise we would unfortunately have to block this on our end :-(

Regards,
David

Again, sincere apologies David and everyone else being annoyed by this. i've done as you asked. New email, new password, new avatar, although the avatar doesn't appear to have changed yet.

If this doesn't work, I guess you'll have to block me to prevent others from having to deal with this.

Also, if this doesn't work, let me try disabling the email account entirely from my end. Thanks.

Hello Bruce,

It's still happening :-( I'll pass it to our developers now. Please make sure that you don't have any auto-forwarding set up in your email client or (most likely) a virus that resends these mails from all your addresses.

David

I don't of which I'm aware. I've reached out to you in another way. I don't want to reveal how for obvious reasons. Thanks for your patience.

Bruce,

I don't see any emails coming from you recently, though please tell me - did you ever contact me through david@doist.io or david@todoist.com in the past, because I've been getting the exact same mails every day for weeks and thought it's just because my email address is published in a few threads, but if there's something resending these mails on your end and you have my address in your contact list, please remove it ;)

David

David,

Sorry, I don't have your email or anyone's from Todoist in my contacts. Are you responding to my private message in your facebook account?

Also, I'm not familiar with a method to stop forwarding of spam from Apple Mail accounts. This has never happened before so I'm at a loss to explain it. If you must, go ahead and remove my ID from the forums. I don't want to cause anyone unnecessary problems and inconvenience.

So you know, the ID they just hacked was created yesterday, with a new password applied to my forum account. The passwords I use are 50 characters long, using a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols and is described as AES-256 using Encrypt-then-MAC. It makes me think there is someway else they are getting on the forum with my ID.

What did you think of my idea to register with a fake name using a gmail account? I think this would at least identify if he/she is targeting my name, email, or otherwise. If you agree, I'll create the email address and respond back to you at this email address with the identity I've created so you will recognize it.

Thanks again for your patience.

Bruce,

I haven't checked our Facebook inbox, it's usually not me responding there, I'll check it now.

I don't suspect your account was hacked, it looks like something is just sending an email to every email address you've ever responded to and since our support system generates addresses that can be used to send a response via email - that's what's happening.

So regardless of the password strength and encryption, if you have a virus, it will use your email client to send a message and it will be completely authorized by the client.

I don't think registering with a fake ID would help because if it is a virus, then it will just keep responding to the email address of this thread even if you wouldn't have a Todoist account anymore.

That said, please tell me - what email client are you using? Apple Mail? Outlook? Thunderbird? Please try to archive your emails from this client, export them to a file and then delete this client from your computer and this way we can see if it will stop.

David

David,

I'm using Apple Mail. I did a complete system scan yesterday. Took 12 hours. Not a single infected file was reported. Although I do suppose that some viruses can defeat such things. If what you say is true, that's disconcerting as I use this computer to make my living and all my clients email addresses are in my address book. However, i"m quite sure that if the same thing were to occur with them, I'd be hearing about it quickly and loudly. So your suggestion of deleting Apple Mail from my computer is not really an option at this point as I'm sure you understand.

It seems this individual reacts to my postings. The one where I indicated to you that I had changed my email, password, and avatar, I guess he wanted to send a message indicating that wouldn't stop him. At least that's the message I got seeing rapid fire postings by him right after.

For now, I'll stay out of the forums until this is resolved one way or another so as not to cause anymore annoyance for anyone else.

Bruce,

I understand. Though it's already partially resolved on our end :) we've implemented a new spam filter that should take care of this and we'll keep looking into it. The strange part is that when I extract the "raw" spam emails, they seem to arrive from a completely different account and yet show up as if they would be posted by you.

That said, don't worry, it's certainly not your fault, we'll keep looking into this and see what can be done.

David

Thanks David,

Sounds like good news for me, not so good for you. Appreciate you drilling down on this one. I really didn't want to stop using Todoist.

Would you like me to post something to see if this works?

Bruce, no need to. So far I don't see any new spam in this thread so probably our filter worked, though we'll keep looking :)

Bruce,

We've partially found the cause. First of all, I'd like to apologize for the suspicion, these mails are not sent from your end. That is - not even unwillingly, the fact that they show up as posted by you is a separate issue on our end. So, in other words - we're receiving this spam from various email addresses, but the spammers got hold of a certain unique incoming email address that contains your user ID in it so it looks like it's coming from you.

So the good news in it is that there's no issue on your end at all, sorry for that :-( We're looking into it on our end, but if you wish to use any other email address including your previous one, feel free to do so, it won't make a change. Again. sorry for the inconvenience.

Regards,
David

Thanks again David, your diligent tracking of this issue is much appreciated. I'm obviously relieved this is nothing I've caused from my end.
