Todoist Mac App Badges Disappeared

Maybe I'm wrong, but I could have sworn there were app badges on the Todoist Mac app icon that showed the number of tasks that were due for the day. Today when I logged in to my computer, there were no app badges. Was this functionality removed, or is this only available on the iPhone version of Todoist?

Hello Damion,

I'm unsure about a badge on the icon in the doc, but there definitely is a task count in the TD icon in the top-right area of the menu bar. I've tried now and it shows TD and right next to it a number of tasks due today and overdue. Please try to restart the app and make sure you're online.

David

Thanks David; your suggestion worked. It would be nice if you guys could add the badge count on the Todoist dock icon as well; that would be really helpful in addition to auto badge updates. ;-)

Hi Damion!

We have just released a new version of the Mac app that fixes different issues, and also we've added new features. One of the new features is the badge on the dock icon! :-)

This new version (5.x) is only available for Mac OS X 10.9+. You can download it from our Mac app website (https://todoist.com/mac) or on the Todoist app menu, clicking on "Check for Updates...". Soon it will be available to download from the Mac App Store.

I just downloaded the newest version of Todoist for Mac, have the badges turned on, but no badges are showing on the icon or the menu bar. Any suggestions?

Hi Damion,

Please try restarting your computer. I'm using the latest version as well and I can see the total due/overdue tasks in the menubar. If that doesn't help, can you please tell me which version of OSX you're running?

Clyde, I'm running OSX 10.9.4. I've restarted the computer, but still no badge on the TD icon in my dock or the menu bar. :( I do have the "Show badge in dock icon" preference selected.

Hi Damion,

Try clearing the cache of the application. To do that, you can go to "Preferences" and click on "clear application cache" button. Just to clarify, you do have tasks that are due today or overdue, correct?

Clyde, just tried that, and no luck either. I still have two tasks due for today; the iPhone app is correctly displaying the "2" but the Mac has nothing. Not really sure what to do now; any other suggestions?

Hi Damion,

In the Preference page, can you try toggling the option to show the badge in the dock and menu bar off to on again? Then restart the application. Also, try launching Safari and go to https://todoist.com. After which, check if the badges are now working properly.

Hi Damion,

Yes, it's working for me. I'm also using version 10.9.4 as well. We just released an updated version just a couple of hours ago. Please download that and install it. Let me know if that still doesn't help.

Clyde, that's what I just downloaded when I deleted Todoist off my Mac. I started down this road by downloading the update when I got off work two hours ago and ran into all these problems. I've toggled, restarted, deleted, reinstalled, everything, and it's still not working. Can you attach pictures to show me what it should be looking like? This is really frustrating.

Still not working for me. Maybe I misunderstood the release notes, but I thought the new version was supposed to offer an app badge to the dock icon of Todoist?

Yes, it does. As you can see in the screenshot, it does now show the badge in the dock and menu bar. I'm waiting for the feedback from our developer and I'll let you know once I get it.

Hi Damion and Dima!

We have just fixed this issue. I recommend you to clear the cache of the app. Go to the "Preferences" window, and "Clear application cache". Finally close the app and open it again. Now it should show you again the badge! :-)

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Clyde,

You are correct; I just thought I could get another opinion, but if not I'll wait.

Incidentally, the new sync doesn't seem to be working properly with my iPhone if my Mac goes to sleep. For example, lets say I start the day with five tasks; a "5" will show up on the badge of both the Mac and iPhone versions of TD. Throughout the day, I will complete tasks, thus reducing the badge on my iPhone. When I get home and open up my Mac however, the badge still says "5" on both the dock and menu areas of TD. On the previous version of TD, the menu area number would match what was on my iPhone, whereas now the only way that I can see to make them match up is to open ToDoist, and perform a manual sync. Shouldn't the iPhone and Mac badges be updating to match each other in the background?

Or in simpler terms, if your Mac goes to sleep and you make changes during this period on TD for iPhone, they are not reflected on TD Mac unless you manually sync. That's been my experience so far anyway.

Hi Damion,

I can't replicate this. I put my Mac to sleep, completed some tasks in my iPhone but the badge was updated. Granted it took a few seconds to update it, the Mac app updated itself without me manually refreshing it.

Do you have app nap enabled for the Todoist Mac app?

Clyde

Hi Clyde,

Strange; it's still definitely happening for me. I just woke my computer up, and the TD icon is still showing the task number for yesterday. As for App Nap, I guess I don't have that enabled; what does that do, and can you tell me how to turn it on?

Clyde Romo staff

Hi Damion,

I'll report this to our developer to see if we can find the possible cause of the problem. App Nap is the feature of OSX where it basically slows application down if it's hidden behind other windows.

You can learn more about it here: https://www.apple.com/osx/advanced-technologies/.

Thanks Clyde; there's definitely an issue. TD Mac is still showing the badge from yesterday, and one task (that I completed yesterday on my iPhone) as active and overdue. The only way to rectify this is to manually sync TD on the Mac.

Clyde, you probably haven't heard back from your developers yet, but the problem is still happening; I have to manually sync TD for Mac when I wake the computer in the morning, and also when I get home from work, as the background sync doesn't work after the computer goes to sleep. Hope your developers can find a fix.

Please, let us know when this new update is available if the issues is now fixed! :-)

Nothing to apologize for Enric!! As long as it ultimately works, that's all I care about. If we can just get the badges working the same way on the iPhone version of TD (yes, I have an open thread about this), I'll be super happy!!

I've read this thread. Let me explain it to you. :-)

On Mac (if I'm not wrong) after a few minutes of being in sleep mode the OS disconnects the Wi-Fi to save energy. Once the system disconnects from Wi-Fi, we can't sync automatically the app.

For example, if you put your Mac in sleep now, and add a new task automatically from another device, and you wake up the Mac again it will be automatically updated because the Wi-Fi network was still connected.

And if you do the same, but instead of add the new task immediately after put the Mac in sleep, and you add it 5 minutes after, it will not be updated. You'll have to wait a few seconds until it connects again to the Wi-Fi and syncs.

I attach an screenshot where you can see the System Preferences window where you can select or deselect this option to save energy.

Now, with this new version of the app, if you have the app opened, it will detect when you connect again to the Wi-Fi network and will sync automatically. But you'll have to give to the app a few seconds (2 - 5 sec.)! :-)

Enric

Enric, thanks for the explanation and the screenshot. So far, the new version is working great, and I will check again tonight when I get home to see if it updates based on the tasks I complete today. My other hope is that the iPhone version can implement something similar with the icon badges, in that when you wake your phone up, the badges will automatically update without having to open the app first; this is the other post I was referencing that I've been going back and forth with TD on for over a year. I'm optimistic though; if you can do it for the Mac, surely it's possible for the iPhone!!
