Syncing didn't work and now my lists have completely DISAPPEARED

M

My todoist was doing fine, but now it's turned into a massive mess!! For some reason, my iphone where I had been working primarily didn't sync (now I realize for at least one week even though it had wifi access all this time) so all the work I'd done on it in the past few days is now NOT showing up on either my laptop or iPad with which the iphone was synced. I shut down and reboot my iphone to try to reboot things, but the todoist sync still wasn't working (the recent work wasn't showing up on my laptop or iPad). I then logged out of todoist on my iPhone, and tried to login. Couldn't login for some reason, so I requested a new todoist password to log into the app on my iiphone. I went through the process to reset a new password. But then for some reason, the new password didn't work in the todoist app on my iphone. When I typed in the new password todoist kept indicating there was an error and so I couldn't enter todoist. I tried again and again, still not working. I shut down my iphone again and after I had re-logged in again when I clicked on the todoist app, somehow I was able to get back into todoist without entering a login or password. But now all my lists have completely VANISHED on my iPhone. This is really HORRIBLE!!!!! Please help me to re-access my complete lists including all the work I've done in the past few days! I've got some urgent deadlines, and I really need them.

Hello Marie,

Unfortunately, if the local offline data that contain a log of all the changes has been deleted and none of these changes have been synced or some were overwritten (as there's a limit to how many changes the app can store locally before it must sync), then there's no way of retrieving it :-(

However, just in case the changes did sync, but for some other reason they weren't displayed on your other devices, please try to go to todoist.com click on the gear icon and go to Settings -> Backups, download the most recent backup file and see if these changes are stored in the related project backup files (you can import them as regular project templates through the "Task Actions" menu in a project).

Another thing you can try is to go to your phone's Settings -> General -> App Background Refresh and make sure that Todoist is allowed to sync as it utilizes the background sync feature and can only sync when it's on. After that, try to log in again.

Also, make sure you're logging into the correct account. Based on past reports, it's common that a task list can completely disappear if a different account is used or, while trying to sign-in via Google, a new account is created while the data is still there on the other account.

Please let me know if either of this helped.

Regards,
David

Hello David,
I will try those suggestions out. Strangely, I cannot even log into todoist on my iphone through the todoist app now. It keeps coming up with an error, the 403 error I mentioned in my previous post. How can this be resolved so that I can log into todoist on my iphone?

Marie,

Please tell me - what version of iOS are you using? We have recently deprecated a very old API which made any old version that might have been in use on devices that don't have iOS 7 not accessible anymore. Are you using an older version of our app with iOS 6 or earlier? If so, then unfortunately it won't work at all anymore :-(

Looking in the "About section" of my iPhone, it looks like I have version 7.1.1. So it seems the version is not the problem. How can I get it working again?

Marie,

Please go to the Settings -> Usage -> Apps and see what's the version of the Todoist app that you're using?

Also, try to set your phone's language and local settings to English, in case you're using a different language and then try to log in (as based on a past report, one time such error message was related to a translation problem).

What do I do to be able to login into todoist on my iPhone?

Marie,

As I've mentioned in my last reply:

"try to set your phone's language and local settings to English, in case you're using a different language and then try to log in (as based on a past report, one time such error message was related to a translation problem)."

I'm sorry for asking this again, but in cases like this we must know for sure if something has been tried and ruled out (and didn't help).

However, I'm afraid, it may be problematic to recover the data because you're using a very old version of the app which won't sync anymore. Please try to update it to the latest version 8.4.1 from https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/todoist-to-do-list-task-list/id572688855?mt=8 and see if after you log in, you'll see all your data.

I only work in english language and all my settings are already in english, so that's not the problem.

I've only relatively recently joined Todoist and became a premium member, so the todoist version I downloaded was what was on available on the todoist website at the time, not some version which I'd been holding on to for a long time.
I find it surprising that you're saying this is a very old version. I'm a new Todoist member, and only started using the app extensively recently. If you're going to update the app version, it should not cause complete DISARRAY and MESS for people who are using your previous version. Compatability is usually built into professionally done softwares and apps, so that it will continue to function smoothly even if the version is updated. I'm already using an updated 7 version of IOS, so this really seems to be a poor programming problem with the Todoist version which hasn't accounted for a lot of factors to ensure smooth functioning of the software for users.

I have to be frank, it's easy to tell a Todoist client to upgrade the software and if that doesn't work there's nothing that can be done. But I don't know if Todoist is aware of the amount of problems this causes for the client, the amount of work lost, the time wasted, the amount of time and extra work imposed by having to recall and regenerate the lost information.

The syncing was fine until about a week ago. And at this point, I must admit I don't care whether the syncing will work in the future as I obviously cannot trust this app to reliably store my information and make my work easier and will have to rethink my todo list system. I would just like to recover the recent work to manage some deadlines that must be done in the next 2 days.

I understand a previous user was able to login by "generated another API code in the settings of the Web app". Could you tell me how to do this on my iPhone?

Marie,

We're very sorry for the inconvenience, we're unsure how it's possible that you've got this version of our app. On the site https://todoist.com/iphone we always link directly to the Apple Store page where the latest version is published. Just to make sure - you are using the official Todoist app? There are actually other Todoist-based apps made by third-party developers which could have different versions or even functionality.

Backwards compatibility is crucial and we try our best to maintain it as long as possible, but as our app evolves, gets new features and also needs to become compatible with the latest versions of iOS, some processes have to change. The biggest change in iOS 7 is the background syncing. It affects our entire system across all platforms and our servers are now optimized to use it. But unfortunately, this means that in order to offer all users the same great performance, we had to deprecate some older processes. We've been using them for 7 years, keeping backwards compatibility, but at this point it's no longer possible without affecting all users due to the extra steps for maintaining the oldest API versions.

Now, as for the new API token, please log in on the web, go to Settings -> Account and here you can use the "Issue a new API token" link and see if it helps. Let me know if this works on the 8.4.1 version of our app.

David

Yes, I realize syncing is complicated and it's great when it works. Still had I been aware beforehand that this kind of thing would happen, I perhaps would consider sticking with a non-syncing but reliable list system.

You had mentioned that there is a "local offline data that contain a log of all the changes". Just to understand how that works, where is that data stored in the iphone? You mentioned it is offline. What happens to it when the Todoist user logs out of the Todoist app on the iPhone?

Marie,

I'm unsure where exactly this is stored as Apple doesn't allow browsing through the device's folder structure, but this data is not accessible directly, only stored in combination with the app. Logging out will not delete it, only deleting the app will.

Please let me know if the new API token helped. Also, for us to understand how could you get this version of the app, please tell me - did you see an update available for it and the App Store app showing that there are updates available or did iOS not display this at all?

So if I understand correctly, my most recent additions/revisions to Todoist over the past week is still stored in the offline iphone Apple files, even though I logged out of Todoist and also my iPhone (to reboot)?

When I update the version of the Todoist app from 6.1 to the newest version, will this constitute a "deleting of the app" and wipe out the "local offline data"?

I will check where the app came from, I'm fairly certain I just purchased and downloaded it from the app store. But will doublecheck.

Marie,

Theoretically, an update should not delete offline data, there was one exception a few versions ago where the update had to delete it. I will consult it directly with our developers to make sure if it wasn't a version before 6.0.

It occurred to me - Todoist never synced for at least one week on my iphone. Will the recent todoist contents still be in the "offline data" of my iPhone? Or does it require a sync for the recent content to be in the "offline data"?

Marie,

The offline data is like a browser's cache, it will always be used as the first source. In fact, even if the syncing would work correctly, we use offline caching to increase performance so that every change you make - it goes right to the offline data and then syncs a few seconds later instead of always relying on the connection.

I haven't heard back from the devs, but unfortunately the problem is that if the app won't log you in because it uses the old API, there may be no way to recover this data anyway since the only way to log in would be to update it to the latest version so the update is not avoidable :-(

Thanks for letting me know how the browser's cache works.
Even though I know you explained updating is unavoidable, I'll still await word from you on whether updating will wipe out the offline data before doing anything further on my iphone. I've resorted back to pen and paper to manage for the moment. Please let me know as soon as you hear from the developers.

Marie,

According to the developers, it was the update from version 5 to 6 that caused the deletion. However, they also said that logging out also removes offline storage, unfortunately :-(

Nonetheless, please upgrade to the latest version and let me know if the sync from the web to iOS works then.

David,

I had high regard for Todoist when I first joined and was starting to rely on it heavily. I wish it wasn't the case, but I have to say this incident was AWFUL and created a BIG MESS!! It was shocking to have lost so much information/data on Todoist in the blink of an eye, a lot of which was detailed planning info which had been painstakingly entered on a daily basis,

I've spent the past few days in a frenzied scramble trying to recall and reconstruct that information. A lot of the lost info/data included names, telephone numbers, emails and other detailed info which are lost completely and will not be recoverable ever.

To say this situation has been DETRIMENTAL to my productivity is an understatement.
I've WASTED an ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF TIME trying to rectify this problem and get my work done despite of it. It brought things to a standstill and jeopardized my deadlines.

To be honest, I only became a premier member of Todoist and downloaded the app from the App store 3-4 months ago (April 2014), so it's astonishing to me that not updating the Todoist app software only once or twice since I became a member should wreak SO MUCH havoc on the app's functioning as to render it NON-FUNCTIONING (I was already using IOS 7.1.1). It's really surprising that LOSING INFORMATION on Todoist could be SO EASY.

Perhaps it was my error to have started relying heavily on Todoist. After this experience, I'm having difficulty feeling that I can trust Todoist not to lose my information/data. I have told myself I will give Todoist a second chance. But if it happens again, I realize it would be smarter to look for another system which can be trusted.

Todoist users are busy people. Sometimes they may be too tied up to pay close attention to ok every update promptly. Please ensure that measures for compatability and continuity are programmed into the app so that missing a couple of Todoist software updates does not cause the app to completely CEASE FUNCTIONING. There should also be some kind of offline data "back up system" put in place, so that information/data is recoverable when Todoist fails to sync properly.

Sorry to vent, but this has caused problems and I felt the need to express it.

Regards,
Marie
