Outlook Email Links

J

Hi,

I am using Todoist Outlook plugin and it is great. I often save an email as a task and then file that email away.

Sometimes when i click on the task email link the email opens without any problems (sometimes todoist takes a little time searching for the email but this is understandable as i have moved it). However quite often the link appears to be dead and Todoist takes no action when i click it.

Please can you provide a resolution to this?

Thanks,
Jake

Hello Jake,

Please tell me - did you notice any pattern to this issue? For example, does the link stop working always if you archive the email or always if it's an email from a specific folder or anything that could point to some common situation in each such case?

Best regards,
David

Hi,

I have managed to find the source of the issue.

The links don't work when there is any other email window opened in
Outlook. For example if I am reading an email in a separate window and then
click a link in my Todoist tasks the link will not work (nothing will
happen). However as soon as I close the window i was reading the link
becomes active again.

Are you aware of this issue?

It would be good to have the ability to have multiple emails open and also
be able to click on the email links.

Thanks,
Jake

Jake,

We weren't aware of this issue. I've tried to reproduce this now, but to no avail. Please confirm if that is what you're doing:

1. Double-click on a message to open it.
2. Go back to the Outlook Inbox with this message opened.
3. Single-click on a different message so that it's highlighted.
4. Use "Add email as task" in Todoist inside a project with the link at the bottom.

This worked fine for me and added the correct link to the second email and it could be opened through the link in the task.

That said, does this happen to you also with regular emails or only if the one you want to add as a task is an invitation?

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

This isn't quite what I am doing (what you explained works fine for me), I
am doing the below:

1. Double click any email
2. Go back into the inbox and then single click a task in the Todoist
plugin for Outlook (this is a task that is link to an email)

When I single click the linked task in Todoist nothing happens. However
if I close the open email window and then click the same linked task it
opens the linked email straight away without any issues.

Thanks,
Jake

I am having the same problem with Todoist not being able to "find" Outlook emails that have been linked to task, then moved to a different Outlook folder. Here is the reproducible (for me) sequence.

1. Select an email that is in Inbox, click "Add Todist" icon and email info is populated as a task.
2. Move that email to another folder, for example Drafts.
3. From Inbox, open (as a window) an additional email or emails.
4. Then from Todoist list, click on the task created in Step 1 - nothing happens, Todoist does not bring up the email -- a problem!
5. Close the mail windows opened in Step 3, click on the task created in Step 1 and Todoist completes a scan to find and open the email (but only after all open mail windows have been closed).

I often have many email windows open and would greatly appreciated a solution to this issue.

thanks
Tom H.

Jake/Tom,

Thank you for clarifying. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this either. The only time that a linked message would not open is when it's the same message that already is opened. Outlook would not open it for the second time.

As for your second report - that's something we're looking into and hope to find a more reliable solution to search for the related mails in future updates of our plugin.

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

Do you have any suggestions as to what can be done to rectify this issue?

Thanks,

To be clear - this is for archived emails. I haven't tried it with emails
that are only in my inbox but will try and report back.

Jake,

Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done about it at the moment :-( You could of course try to always move the mail first and then add it as a task once it's in the folder you'd like to keep it.

David

Hi,

Ok so I've tried moving emails and then adding them as a task to Todoist
and this solves the issue for those emails.

However I would be keen to understand if the outstanding issue is something
that will be addressed in future updates as a lot of people will add an
email as a task and then move it out of their inbox.

Moving an email and then going into that folder, finding the email and then
adding it as a task and then going back into your inbox to move the next
email quickly becomes labourious when there is clearly a simpler way of
doing things.

Thanks,

Jake,

We'll surely look into it. The cause for this is the fact that a moved message sometimes (especially when using Exchange) changes its unique ID making it impossible for Todoist to track it. We've found an app that manages to handle this better so we're investigating what methods it uses and hope to implement them into our plugin soon.

Best regards,
David

Hi,
Just thought that I would also contribute to this discussion so you knew other people are also experiencing the issue.
If I add an email to Todoist as a task, then file it in another folder Todoist can ONLY open the email again if no other Outlook windows are open (other than the main screen). Jake - can't thank you enough for identifying the cause of the issue though! That has saved me a lot of time!

Cheers

I experience the same issue. After closing other mail windows and the reminder window, Todoist start searching and find the mail.

I'm using OUtlook 2013! May be it helps

I am experiencing the same behavior. When another Outlook window is open, the link to the e-mail within the Todoist task list does nothing. When I have closed all Outlook windows except the main one, then the link to the e-mail opens fine.

It seems like this has been a known issue since June. Is there a fix on the horizon? I am just trying out the product, and I love it so far except for this issue.

Hi,

We are looking into it, it is taking longer than we hope, due to issues on our end. We hope it wont be much longer.

The biggest thing for me is that I keep an inbox of zero. What would be helpful for me is to understand the search algorithm to find the email so I can move the email into a place where it may find it more quickly.

I hope that the issues preventing ToDoist from opening e-mail links when any other Outlook window is open are still near to being addressed. This is making it hard for me to use ToDoist as my task manager at work--I just have a lot of activity within Outlook each day, and to close out of every other Outlook window in order to open a task e-mail is frustrating.

I strive for an inbox of zero as well (not always successfully). I also use SimplyFIle from TechHit, which allows one-click filing of messages into suggested folders. For me, being able to create a ToDoist task with a single click, and then use SimplyFile for single-click filing of that message, would be close to e-mail nirvana. Actual e-mail nirvana would be being able to click once to file the message AND create the task, which might make finding that message later easier for ToDoist.

Here we are in December and the issue of dead links remains. I haven't any other email windows open, I haven't moved the email or done anything else with it. Immediately after creating the todoist item from the email clicking on the todoist item does nothing.

Without this feature it makes the Outlook integration completely useless.
