Lost all offline tasks

C

I have been updating, completing, and adding todoist tasks while in airplane mode on my iPhone-- likely hundreds of changes, postponing tasks and reorganizing due dates. I finally connected my iPhone to Wi-Fi and every single change is gone, both on the phone and using my PC (Firefox and IE). To report that I am sick about losing my entire professional and personal to do list is an understatement.

I have encountered repeated issues with todoist over the last year. I have been patient. I have forgiven. I would love to forgive on this issue as well.

How can I get those tasks back and in order, please? My business is dependent on it, which was likely my biggest mistake. What is the point of a system when I need to maintain a hard copy of lists and sticky notes because it does not function properly?

Yes, I have updated/synced my lists. Yes, the browsers have been updated and cleared. Please advise.

Thank you.

I also need to add that the app is crashing on the iPhone upon any attempt to open it. However, the red number circle with the tasks count for the day is 153-- because all of those tasks that had been postponed and rescheduled are now showing as past due.

Hello Cheryl,

We're very sorry for the inconvenience :-( We're surprised to hear that as Todoist is build from ground up so that such situation is technically impossible. Unless the app is being deleted or reinstalled before the changes are synced, it simply cannot discard offline changes under any circumstance. There are checks between the server and the app that must all succeed. The app must confirm the changes the server received and the server must again confirm that it "got it", and only then the changes can be removed from the app's cache.

The app doesn't have a function that would allow it to delete these changes upon failed syncing. We're investigating this right now, but so far can't find any indication of such possibility.

That said, to clarify - you've connected to WiFi and saw all these changes reverts the moment Todoist synced? It didn't show any error messages or prompts? Are all the changes gone or only some most recent ones?

Best regards,
David

While I'm sure that the intent is that the situation is "technically impossible," it is indeed possible and most certainly occurred. The app was not being deleted or reinstalled. The phone had been in airplane mode for some time, though I continued to add and modify todoist tasks. When I discontinued airplane mode, the tasks disappeared from my laptop lists and the app on the iPhone crashed repeatedly. I also could not view the tasks in the second or two before each crash.

I'm sure some behind-the-scenes changes may have occurred, but the program continues to be a problem. While I can now see the tasks on the iPhone, it is not transferring to my laptop in either IE or Mozilla. In fact, I am staring at my iPhone right now as it attempts to sync and cannot. Then, my laptop syncs some of the tasks and has now duplicated many of the new tasks from my iPhone up to 14 times (though I have only attempted to sync 4 times this evening).

I received the todoist email re: Business use of the app and am concerned for any business who is relying on todoist to manage and such critical data for its company.

I cannot keep fighting with this app every few months. The issues are not minor. They are often significant. Whether it is a major problem like this or issues on my phone that require me to constantly sign in and out to correct.... I appreciate the time that you put into the program, but please trust your customers when they report issues. We WANT you to be successful! The app concept is fantastic. Thank you for that.

I have attached a screenshot of the duplication visible on my laptop. It is the same with IE and Mozilla.

I'm sorry... to answer your questions, no, I did not receive any errors or prompts. All problems involve tasks added, deleted, or edited since I put the phone on airplane mode.

I am deleting and completing tasks now. I need to be able to function tomorrow. I will do this for a little time, but will likely discontinue such a time-stealing task, as it completely contradicts the benefits I saw by using todoist. Any help or further recommendations will be appreciated. Thank you!

I also noticed that while the new tasks synced over with 14 duplicates, any tasks that were completed during the airplane mode still remain, showing overdue task dates. I hope this information is helpful in determining the origin of the problem.

Thank you!

Hello Cheryl,

I apologize if my answer let you believe that I don't trust you that this has happened to you - I do, but as I've said, it's surprising to our entire team as we've put a lot of effort to make sure that the safety of your data is the most basic function that can't fail. We're investigating this now.

The duplication of tasks is actually something that we're aware of and have received another report of it, we're working on a fix for that too. Please try to clear the browser's cache, log out and back in and see if it removes the duplicates as so far we've noticed that it seems to be a front-end issue with the cached data.

In fact, deleting Todoist's local data from the browser should force it to re-sync it correctly.

So, to clarify, right now, you do see the previously missing tasks on your iPhone, but it can't sync them to the server?

I'll update you as soon as I hear back from the developers.

Best regards,
David

I have cleared the information in all browsers and, in fact, downloaded Chrome and used it for the first time and still encountered the same issues. I have over 750 tasks listed for today because any task added on my iPhone synced over (we are now up to 16 to 20 duplicates) and any old tasks were not postponed or marked as completely, so they are sitting as past due. The same occurs on my phone, except that I do not see duplicates.

The missing tasks are visible, but not in the correct place and have countless duplicates. I am still trying to manually remove some of the 750+ tasks, but I just do not have the time for it (since each "delete task" selection has a multi-second delay).

The answer is yes, I see many of the missing tasks; however, the duplicates are unbelievable, and I suspect that every time the phone and PC are attempting to sync, they merely multiply. This is occurring in EI, Mozilla, and Chrome.

Please advise as to when this issue will be resolved. I cannot even locate the tasks that I need to do amid the hundreds of duplicates. The phone does not allow me to see all of the tasks either, though it states that I have over 700 tasks for today, I see only a fraction of that. I have resorted to pen and paper, which is certainly cheaper, but is not the manner by which I prefer to organize my priorities for my business and personal lives.

Thank you for keeping me updated. I hope to hear of a solution very soon!

Should I uninstall the app on my iPhone? I am hesitant to do so, however, due to the risk of it becoming as crowded visually as my PC lists. Please advise.

The PC either just synced with my phone again and multiplied or I had over 200 tasks for today (when the clock struck midnight). I never have 200 tasks in one day... but according to toidoist, I now have 929. Manually correcting that myself is simply unmanageable.

I just "completed" 41 duplicates of one task. Deleting has a delay, and while I hate that I will have all of those tasks lingering in my "completed tasks" list, I absolutely cannot lose any additional time, even in seconds. Over 900 tasks...

Okay, help me out here-- I am working on the list, and AS I AM WORKING ON IT, the page will freeze, sync, and add duplicates of the tasks I have previously marked as completed. This includes tasks that may not have had a duplicate that I have postponed. Within a few minutes when todoist syncs on the PC, that task is back on today. What is going on here??? It is literally doubling tasks while I stare at the screen.

Yes, confirmed. Every thing I am postponing or marking complete is returning. I changed browsers and the same is occurring. What a waste to attempt to manual correct my list. I did not perform several important tasks today for my business (that were required deadlines) because I cannot locate specific tasks within the hundreds of tasks appearing. This is unbelievably frustrating and completely contradictory of the time benefit and productivity sought when purchasing todoist. HELP, please (I know you are likely asleep right now, but help will be greatly appreciated early in the morning!). Thank you!

Cheryl,

Please try to reinstall the iOS app. It's possible that due to the initial sync issue, it is the one causing these duplicates as it tries to sync the same data all over again.

As for the removal of the duplicates - if reinstalling the iOS app won't help (if it will, then these duplicates could remove themselves), then you could try 2 options:

1. If you have a project with, let's say 15 "original" (unique) tasks, create a new project with the same name, move these 15 tasks to it and then delete the old project containing all the duplicates (make sure it doesn't have sub-projects which would be deleted too).

2. Hold the CTRL key and click on the names of these duplicates. This will allow you to multi-select them and then choose the "Delete" option for all selected tasks from the menu at the top (it will show up as you start multi-selecting).

We're still investigating this issue on our end, hoping to have a solution soon. Sorry for the inconvenience :-(

Best regards,
David

Well, it took some serious time, but it worked. THANK YOU. I'm still not happy that it occurred at all, but I am thrilled to use todoist again. The concept is consistent with my own ways of thinking, and I love it. I obviously also cannot function without it. I missed multiple deadlines, which is unfortunate.

Thank you for responding so quickly this morning. Thank you for monitoring and replying to concerns from your users.

To note, I did not create new projects. I deleted and reinstalled the iOS app, which did correct the chronic syncing and duplications, and used CTRL to select and delete the (literally) hundreds of duplicates. I also was able to postpone and reschedule apps that would not move or stay on the dates that I selected. All seems well.

Thank you.

Cheryl,

I'm glad to hear that it worked, but still - of course this shouldn't have happened in the first place and we're looking into this. Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

David
