Double Entries - Detailed Notes

Running iOS 7.1.1
Todoist 8.2.1 12103 (Premium)

I had a problem earlier with creating a new todo and then having a duplicate of it appear the next time I went back into the app. I figured the best thing to do would be to figure out how to reproduce it and then isolate everything I could.

Here is some pre-information:

*To do was created within a Level 1 Sub project (Don't know if that is significant)
*Project was not shared
*Cellular Only - No Wifi - Below average signal quality
*Had apps running in the background. Was able to reproduce regardless of other apps running or having them all closed.

Exact Scenario:

1) Create new todo
2) Click done
3) Use top button on phone to put phone to sleep (without returning to home screen)
4) Wait at least 15 seconds, return and had a duplicate to do. If I came back say 5 seconds later instead of 15, the problem would not occur. Had to wait at least 10 seconds, usually around 15 seconds.

Was able to reproduce this about 8 times in a row, then it stopped. I finally narrowed it down to the following:

If it starts syncing before I put the phone to sleep by press top button on the phone, it would NOT create a double entry. (syncing denoted by spinning wheel in top bar of phone)

If it did not start syncing before I put the phone to sleep, I would get a duplicate if I waited 15 seconds and returned to the app. Sometimes the duplicate would not show up until I saw the sync wheel spinning at the top bar. I reproduced this 10 times in a row.

If I went to the home screen before putting app to sleep, it did not reoccur (But I am not 100% certain, as I had not discovered the sync timing). Only tested a couple times

It seems like if I waited say 1 minute before returning to the app, it wouldn't duplicate (but not 100% sure). Only tested a couple times.

I was also able to make this same thing occur with a note within a to do

If I sign out and sign back in, the duplicates all go away. If I visit todoist.com on my computer, non of the duplicates appear.

Hopefully this information will be somewhat helpful in coming up with a solution. If I had a way to do a screen record on my phone, I would provide that, but don't know how.

Love the service so far. Hope this bug can get resolved.

Thanks ~ Curtis

Also noticed that when I deleted all the test todo's I had created on the todoist.com, when I synced my phone, it only removed one set of the tasks and left the duplicate. The only way to get rid of them on the phone was to log out and log back in on the phone.

Hello Curtis,

I've tested it on our new unreleased version 8.2.2 multiple times and couldn't reproduce it at all. We'll soon release version 8.3 (we're skipping 8.2.2 as we'll add new features and it'd take Apple too long to review another version before that) so if you can reproduce this issue in 8.3 next week, please let us know.

Best regards,
David

Great. I'll download it when it's released and try it out.

Thanks,

Hi Florian,

Can you reproduce the same problem using the same steps outlined by Curtis and does it happen every time? I tried testing it on my iPhone running on version 8.3.1 but I'm not getting duplicate tasks. :-(

Please try re-installing the app and see if that helps out with the issue. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Regards,

Clyde

Hi Florian,

Just to clarify, you were able to reproduce the problem using the steps outlined by Curtis? This is important as even though I'm not getting the same problem (I just tested again), having another user replicate the issue with the same exact steps would be interesting.

Do you you have below average cellular signal quality as well like Curtis mentioned? This might be the key difference why I can't replicate the problem.

Please let me know.

Clyde

Hi Clyde,

I did these steps to duplicate the error:
1) Create new todo
2) Click done
3) Use top button on phone to put phone to sleep (without returning to home screen)
4) Wait at least 15 seconds, return and had a duplicate to do. If I came back say 5 seconds later instead of 15, the problem would not occur. Had to wait at least 10 seconds, usually around 15 seconds.

I'm using my wireless internet at home (10 Mbit/s).

Hi Florian,

Thank you for this! I'll report this back to our developers. Sorry for the inconvenience. Just one last question though, using the same steps, can you replicate it:

1. always
2. most of the time
3. sometimes

I just need to know so I can report this back to our developers as well so when we do test it again, we know what to expect. Thanks again!

Hi Florian,

We're set to release an update soon (it's pending for Apple's approval at moment) that should address the duplication issue. Please watch out for it and update to it as soon as you can.

Clyde
