Cannot use offline

Thanks for the beautifully designed interface.

I am often on the road, and not always in wifi range on my laptop. When I launch todoist, it requires some kind of connection before allowing 'offline mode'. You can understand how this doesn't really function for me as 'offline' mode at all, as I am unable to add or even view my tasks.

Unfortunately, this is a deal-breaker for me, and I will need to find another task-tracking solution there is no true 'offline' mode available.

Hi Matt,

Then unfortunately that is the case. At this time our apps uses HTML5 which require a connection before going offline. We hope maybe in the future we can change this but right now that is how it works.

Shoot. I'm afraid that that's a deal-breaker for me too. Played around with TD for a bit. The UI is nice, and I found the prospect of syncing to-dos across my two Macs, 1 Windows, iPad and iPhone very appealing. I was all prepared to upgrade to TD Premium. But I will often need true offline access on my Macs. Without it, the Mac OS app is not ready for prime time, at least for my workflow.

This is a big problem for me, too. The whole point of a Mac app is that it is fully functional offline - otherwise, I could just use the web app in the browser. That's why I use Mail instead of Gmail online, and Calendar instead of an online calendar, and so on. There are so many times when I use my Mac with no Internet connection (especially when travelling).

Me too - tried for a day to see if this worked, but had to switch back to Wunderlist :(

Well, make it a true native Mac app and charge extra for it, and "outside" the Premium deal.
I may be nuts but I'd pay some real money for this. Heck, I've bought all three Omni Focus apps at the time, Mac/iPad/iPhone when I thought Apple was my only way to go.

If something can improve my productivity, I pay.

There are different scenarios for your offline option and they're not really consistent.

If I had TD opened and if I worked online for a while, closed the lid of my laptop and opened it (now without WIFI), I can go on working - if it didn't pass more than.. what? An hour? More? This evening it went some 90 minutes between the WIFI and offline mode and during that time I had laptop in the sleep mode with WIFI enabled.

I could continue where I stopped and everything worked nicely.

In other scenarios the TD would go offline and ask me for the password although I'm sitting at home, working with WIFI fully utilized by other apps... all of a sudden if I want to switch back to TD, I'm out, need to login.

This is serious guys and can annoy lots of people. I remember when I was using Toodledo (still think it's a great app) and when third party software came out of nowhere and you could work offline.
These had nothing to do with the Toodledo developers, so if the Doist company doesn't want to lose money in future, I believe it's time to act :-)

This is a problem for me also, I'm sure I could use the app offline on my mac book to start of with. Now it keeps asking me to login.

Its good to know I'm not the only one. I loved Todoist, i moved and re organised all my tasks and projects, until i restarted my computer and i was in no Wifi/Internet range. I couldn't read my tasks which i was supposed to do while on Camping :).

I love the features , but i think i will have to look elsewhere for this feature unless if i know a native offline app is in the works.

I have been a premium user for awhile now and I guess yesterday on the plane was the first time I tried to use the Mac app offline. I totally assumed this was possible. I'm a premium Evernote user which works just fine offline then syncs when it can. I was totally shocked and super bummed that I could not work at all. What's the point of offline if one has to be online to go offline? That's just super silly.

I love Todoist. It took me a long time to pick the right app. But I may need to shop around (again) if this isn't promised on a development path. Why is a good to do list solution so hard to find. It's like the common cold that will never be cured...

Thanks for consideration,

Get the app on your phone, works perfectly fine offline for me!

Wow I just bought premium and I didn't realize that that would be an issue. Why would this be an issue in MacBook but then when I turned off my wifi and turned off cellular on my iphone I was still able to access ToDoist on my iphone? O:-)

Hello Anne,

This issue is caused by Safari. Our Mac app uses it to connect and unfortunately this engine has issues handling HTML5 local storage support. We will consider porting the app to Chrome's engine.

For now, please note that you can use Todoist fully offline on your Mac with Chrome. If you go to https://todoist.com/app using Chrome, log in. Then you can close Chrome, disconnect and then access the site via Chrome while already offline anytime. It will remember the changes you make and sync them once you connect later. That's how the Mac app will work too once it's ported to Chromium.

Best regards,

HUH?? you must be joking, this is joke right? A desktop TODO app that can't store its own local data????? really? I've got to use the browser app in Chrome.

Plus no multiline tasks, I was really liking this till now.

Ian, what do you mean by "multiline tasks" please?

OK, there are a quite a few queries regarding line breaks in task titles and information indicating that this feature has been removed in favour of notes.

e.g, http://nl.todoist.com/Support/show/26745/

But now I see the CTRL+n will insert a line break. I tried SHIFT+return which is a little more intuitive but is not implemented.

I've been playing with it for a few days now and I really like it. I will pay for the extra features but not until I can use the desktop app offline. I'm not thrilled about using Chrome.

Please come up with a fix for this soon. Yes, I'll pay more. If I don't have wifi I certainly can't access via chrome and then go offline.

I love your program but I need to get at my list regardless of wifi access!!!

Hi Lisa,

The latest version of the Mac app (version 5) should be able to work offline. As long as you launched it once online, you'd be able to use it even if you have rebooted/shutdown your computer. :-)

Is the new version of the Todoist Mac app using Safari's or Chrome's engine now?

Hello Dragan,

It's still using the Webkit engine (used by Safari), but we've made some adjustments that make it work fully offline same way Chrome's Webkit version would work. Feel free to try in out - as long as you don't log out manually you can make offline changes and they will be stored.

Hi Clyde. Thank you.
I swear it didn't work the day before I posted to complain but did work the following day. I'm traveling for a week and having this fix is a life saver. Many thanks,

I payed for the Premium and it is really a big thing for me not to be able to access my ToDos offline. Sometimes I am completely without internet for some days and still get things done.

With Things or Omnifocus this is not the case.

Now I am not sure what to do…
