Order for tasks

MM

I am getting frustrated with the new version of TD. I like to move all my tasks in order for the day so I can just go down the list. Everytime I add a new task they keep jumbling up and it sorts each project together. The old version didn't do this - how can I fix it - otherwise TD is no longer any use to me.

Hello Mardi,

Please tell me - do your tasks have times or priorities?

Tasks with a due time can't be reordered on date-based views. Task with a priority can, but only if you reorder them within the same priority group. If you try to move a task with p1 below p4 tasks without actually changing its priority to p4, it will indeed try to jump pack to its p1 group.

Best regards,
David

None have priorities. I just drag them into order, but then if I change an item's project or anything else. When I go back to that day they are all jumbled again. It didn't do this before the last upgrade.

Mardi,

What browser are you using when this happens? Does it occur on another browser? What do you mean by sorting projects together, which view are you looking at, Today, or 7 days or?

Brendon.

I am using Google browser, I am in the Today view, I have all different projects with tasks, sort them in the order that I would like to do them then if I add a new task, it add that new task and then in a split second it then sorts all the tasks I already have (including the new one) into each project automatically - this isn't what I want, I will try windows explorer today.

Mardi,

I am not sure what you are trying to accomplish. As the Today view does not show each project by itself, it's all tasks from all projects in one view, the ones that are due Today. If you are saying that when you use the Quick Add + button at the top, and enter a new task, it changes its view to that project, that is the correct behaviour.

Brendon.

Doesn't matter. It is just making a lot of work for me each day. When I look at Today view and have approx 30-40 tasks - I like to drag them around and put them in exact order for the day - that way I can just work my way down the list for the day. I move them around in order but then when I add a new task it jumbles up my order that I had the task in. It sorts all the tasks by Project - still lists them separately but groups the Projects together. I will have to look at another approach - it never used to change the order of tasks around on the Today view before that last upgrade.

Mardi,

Please send a screenshot of your Today view (send to brendon@doist.io and david@doist.io), so I can be sure of what your layout looks like. Though, if you are sorted between Prioirties for example, that can't be done. P1 tasks need to stay within P1 tasks.

We had quite a few issues with the sorting on the Today view, so we made some changes on how it works.

Brendon.

I also have this problem. I have accepted that the Today view will sort in priority order - I can live with that. However when I plan my day, I want to be able to set the order in which I do things in the morning, and then work through the list in that order (accepting that all P1 will be at the top of the list). So if I drag a P1 item to the top of the list, followed by another P1 item, I want them to stay in that order, but they keep jumping out of order. This is very frustrating.

Hello Matt,

If you have multiple tasks with the same priority, you can drag & drop them anywhere within the same priority group on the today view and they should stay there. Is that exactly what you're doing or are you trying to move the p1 task below p3 tasks, for example? Also, does the task have a specific time (these will always stay at the top)?

Best regards,
David

Yes they are all the same priority, and no, there are no time stamps. Let me retest today so I can try to be very clear and make sure it is not something I am doing wrong (like sorting in a project view when it is set to alpha). I will recheck and post back if I can confirm the problem.

Is it possible to move tasks witihin the same category?

I have multiple tasks that don't have any priority or date and I just want to change their order.

Hi Noam,

What do you mean by category? Do you mean projects or something else? In general, you should be able to change the order of your tasks. Are you running into a specific problem?

Clyde

I ment inside a project.
as it seems it is impossible to move tasks within a project even if they don't have any date or priority assigned to them.

Hi Noam,

You should be able to reorder tasks easily within projects. What problem are you running into?

I am trying to do it by pressing with my mouse on the three lines icon next to the task
and it doesn't allow me to drag the task at all.
The same happens when I try to reorder projects it just doesn't move.

Hi Noam,

What browser are you using? When did this start? Please try logging out and logging back in again as an initial troubleshooting step.

Clyde

I am using google chrome. It started since I started using the app on chrome this morning.
I logged in and out just now and it didn't help much.

Hi Noam,

Do you have javascript disabled or any extension that does that? Please try logging into Incognito Mode (CTRL+SHIFT+N) and see if you can re-order tasks from that mode? If you can, that means that there's a Chrome extension that might be interfering with it.

Clyde

Just now I was sorting manually within one of my projects. After I created a task and then moved one of my previously created tasks into it as a subtask, I lost all ability to drag to order. The move cursor/icon wouldn't show to the left of the done checkbox. I was losing my mind thinking that I had imagined Todoist allowed for manual ordering—I'm a fairly new user. Clicking to other projects didn't help because none of those tasks could be sorted either. Neither did refreshing the UI by clicking the TD logo.

It wasn't until after I reloaded my browser that the ability to sort returned.
