Projects disappeared when when testing out new sharing function

GL

Hello,
I have been using Todoist premium for several months now and just logged on to try out the new sharing feature you added. In both cases where I tried to share a existing project with another email address, the project and the tasks entered under it completely disappeared from my database. They were important items and I cannot find them anywhere, help!

All responses

Hi George,

Please clarify, if you search your account, they aren't there, just gone 100%? Did you ask if the person you shared it with did anything, deleted it (even though that shouldn't actually delete it).

If you log out, and back in again are they still missing?

Regards,
Brendon.

I had 4 projects entered on my todoist, each with several incomplete and completed tasks assigned to them. To test out the new sharing function I tried sending one of the projects to a friend and another to a different email that I have. Both of these project vanished from my todoist and there is not record of them. I also have not been able to retrieve them from the emails I sent them to

Hello George,

Please go to the Settings -> Backups and retrieve some past backups, but also - check if these projects have been backed up in the most recent back-up.

Best regards,
David

David,
I checked all the backups and the 2 missing projects disappeared from the backups after I sent out the sharing invitation to the two other email addresses on 1/23/14. I checked those emails they were sent to and they did not receive the projects either, when they clicked on "accept this invitation to get started" they both received the response "Forbidden - Invalid secret code". Please advise what is going on here and how correct the program and get it to work properly.

George,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I can't reproduce this and it's actually the first report of projects disappearing upon sharing. That's a very serious issue, I'm unsure how it could happen as the function to delete a project requires a confirmation of the user and can only be accessed through the "Delete project" option. A shared project is never moved between accounts, it's only made accessible.

Also - it's impossible that data would disappear from backups. It could either not be backed up if these project were created and disappeared before the next backup was created, but if it did, then these files are no longer modified. Have you checked older backups from the day you've had the projects on your account for at least 24 hours?

Please tell me:
- Did you invite someone who did or did not have a Todoist account before?
- Does anyone except you have access to your account?
- Can you reproduce this issue now using a newly added test project? If you can, the steps to reproduce it would be very helpful in identifying and fixing this issue.

Best regards,
David

I can confirm the exact same thing happened to me about 1hr ago. I attempted to share a project and the moment I did this my project Disappeared from all devices. The recipient recieved the same 'Forbidden' message. A very serious bug that has caused me a serious problem as I've lost numerous key tasks that I was tracking.

I have yet to attempt to retrieve from backup as I made circa 50 changes today that I don't want to lose. Can this page, ease be fixed asap and my project restored? I have created a separate post for this request, cbonfante73. Very, very disappointing.

I just did my first restore from backup. It worked! I won't be trying the sharing function again.. that's for sure!

I would also confirm that the exact same thing happened to me. Created a test shared project and a test task. I invited a friend to it, who I know uses Todoist. The project and the test task disappeared, not to be seen again. Any ideas what's broken here?

Hello,

We've fixed these issues today, but it may unfortunately be required to recreate the affected projects and the new ones won't be affected by it. We're sorry for the inconvenience. Please let us know in case you experience such issue with a new project.

I can confirm the exact same thing happened to me.
After I shared the projects, the tasks disappear from Todoist.
When I go into the iPad I find all tasks, but when I go into Google Chrome they disappear.

Hello Mjorud,

Please tell me - did this happen to you in a project that was created yesterday or today? Or one that you've already had before that?

David

David,

So with your response I tried another shared project and task...and I may have the answer to the problem. I shared the project and upon completion clicked "Leave Project" which looks like the way to close the project. A warning came up, did I want to leave the project. Last time I clicked "Ok" and that's when it disappeared. This time I did not, but hit cancel and then simply clicked the close "X" in the upper right and it seems the project is shared and my friend is marked as "Pending."

To fully test the problem I created another shared project and used the "Leave Project" and this time clicked "Ok" when the warning came up. Sure enough, that's when it disappears never to be seen again. It seems the problem is the "Leave Project" button.

I hope this helps you make this function work properly...I REALLY appreciate it being added without having to create a second account with Wedoist!

Blessings!
Stuart

Stuart,

Thank you for this information. Although it's not actually possible to complete a project, the closest alternative is "Archive project". Leaving it will of course cause it to completely disappear from your list and that's intended.

Also, if you own the project and leave it before anyone accepts the invitation - it will no longer be accessible for anyone. Now, that's the issue I could reproduce and I've passed it to the developers and we'll look into it.

Also, just to understand your use case and improve the system in the future, could you please let us know why you prefer to leave a shared project before even the invited person accepts an invitation to it?

Best regards,
David

David,

The problem, I now realize, is communication of what the actual functions are. As a brand new user to the shared function, I assumed "Leave Project" meant that I've shared the project and now I want to exit this screen and resume work. The "X" in the upper right hand corner seemed like a way to cancel the current work, not to complete the sharing. I now realize that "Leave Project" means that you no longer want to have this project shared with you. Now it makes total sense that it would disappear...it's only pending for my friend and not shared with me any longer. (My guess is that the other users above had the same misunderstanding.)

It's an awkward command, but I would have understand the function more clearly if it has said, "Un-Share Me From This Project" or if the warning had made me realize exactly what was happening when I clicked "Leave Project."

Hope this helps...the correspondence definitely helped me understand how sharing works!

Blessings!
Stuart

Hi,

I just had the same problem. I did the sharing from the Android version. My partner received the invitation. He clicked on it and received a forbidden message. The project disappeared completely from the list and my partner never saw it (neither on PC, nor on Android).
We are using the free version.

Thanks for any clue on how to rescue the to do list.

Hello Dominique,

Please tell me - did you at any point, especially after sending, but before accepting the invitation, left the project (which would indeed cause it to be deleted due to lack of anyone being its owner)?

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

It is indeed possible that I left the Android app before my partner accepted the invitation one or two minutes later.
Hopes this helps you locating the issue

Best regards

Dominique,

Please clarify - do you mean you've left the app as in, didn't use it or did you left the project? There's an option "Leave project" in Todoist which removes you from the project. If you do this before someone accepts the invitation, then the project is lost. Did you use this option?

If not, can you create a new test project and reproduce this issue with it? Also, what version of Android and of our app are you using?

Best regards,
David

I had the same issue. I shared two proejcts, and then clicked Leave this project, without realising that it would make it disappear.

Is there any way of recoverin a project you have 'left'?

Thanks

Lucy,

You'd need to be invited to that project again.

Hi Brendond

The other user had not yet accepted the project when I licked Leave this project. So they get an error message when they try to access it.

thanks

Lucy,

Ah yes sorry. Then in this case, as David described, there isn't anything that can be done. You will have to re-create the project.

Brendon.

OK, so I can't get it back even if I upgraded to premium and searched in backups?

Lucy,

No, as you'd need those backups done already, which they are not as you are not on premium yet.

Brendon.

Hi David and Brendon,

I did the test as you asked. Indeed, if I leave the project before it is accepted by my partner, the project is lost for both of us. The invitation email contains a link leading to a web page with an error message.

My version of Android is 4.1.2. The app version is 3.1.3.

Thanks for your help
Dominique

Wow -- this is really a very bad design. I must have spent two hours building a project to share with my wife and the hit the deadly "leave the project" button and now lost everything. If I'm starting over, I should probably consider another ToDo app quite frankly.
