Why does my Start Page disappear frequently?
I'm having a problem with my Start Page. It appears in the web application. And it'll appear in my Android app. But then it disappears from the app and the widget goes blank. I open the app and look in Filters, but there is now no Start Page. Later it will come back only to disappear again. This sounds like a sync issue. Not sure.
Does the start page load without issue, and it just disappears from the filter options? Is it just the widget that has the issue, or also within the app itself?
Please try logging out of the Android app, clear the data for that app, log out all other locations, clear the cache for any used browsers, and log back in. Let me know if it continues.
The Start Page would initially load after re-installing the app. I could then create a widget using that filter. But then one of two things would happen. Either I would come back to the widget later and see an error asking me to select a correct filter, and/or the app would open with Today as the default view and no evidence of Start Page in the Filters list.
In other words, the Start Page loads without issue, whenever it's listed in the Filters. And both the app and the widget have the issue.
I have cleared the cache and data on the app, uninstalled and rebooted, re-installed and rebooted. No browser pages open.
It's been working this evening until now. I just checked and it's gone again. What I see on the widget is "TD No view" with an alert symbol in the header and "CHOOSE A VIEW - Pick a new view by pressing the top right icon." in the center of the widget. This time I was able to select the Start Page again, though usually it'll take some time/repetitions for this to work.
What else can I try?
So, to clarify - you've created a custom filter in the Android app called "Start Page", is that correct? If so - what search formula did you use in it exactly?
Now, after you use Todoist, do you always log out of the app? Do you use any apps on your phone that promise to save battery life and to do so may, for example, shut down Todoist, disconnect it and force it to log you out?
I'm not using a custom filter, but rather a pre-built configuration for the Start Page defined under General Settings. The one I'm using is "od, tod, tom".
I don't logout of Todoist. I am using Clean Master to clean out junk leftover after uninstalling apps. But no task killers. I can try uninstalling Clean Master.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and used to use the built in Power Saver, but I stopped using that a few weeks ago. (My Start Page issue has been going on now for about 4 months or so.)
I'll try changing the configuration of the Start Page and see what happens.
What I have now done to try to get everything in sync.
1. Reset the Start Page filter to 7 Days and Overdue.
2. Removed the Todoist widget.
3. Logged out of Todoist on my Galaxy Note 2.
4. Closed Chrome and all background apps.
- I'm using both the Todoist extension for Chrome and for Gmail.
5. Restarted Todoist on Android. Refreshed until the Start Page showed the new filter settings.
6. Restarted Chrome and the Todoist extension. Refreshed until the Todoist extension showed the new filter settings for the Start Page.
7. Restarted Todoist in a Chrome tab. Refreshed until Todoist showed the new filter settings for the Start Page.
At this point all three instances are in sync. All three have a Start Page defined as 7 Days and Overdue. I'll repeat these steps to change the Start Page to use the Overdue, Today and Tomorrow filter settings.
If you're relying only on the start page settings and want to use them in your widgets - that's not how it works. The widget should be set to a custom filter for that purpose.
That said, please create a filter in the Android app that will show tasks "od, tod, tom", save it and then select this filter as your "view" in the widgets.
And at some point this morning my Start Page has again vanished.
Thanks, Trey. I'll do that.
Given what you just said, however; and given that it is present as a selection when creating the widget and therefore would reasonably be expected to work; I would recommend that the option to create a widget using the defined Start Page be removed. I'm surprised, though, that a pre-defined filter, like those for the Start Page, would not work. I'd love to hear a technical (or even political) reason for this. Just to satisfy my curiosity.
Thanks all your responses, everyone. Your attention to this has been greatly appreciated.
Also, please note that it vanishes not just from the widget, but from the app as well. Is the Start Page implementation in the Android app or some communication between the app and the server problematic?
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, yes the "start page" choice from the widget should technically work and we'll look into it why it doesn't, but using a filter at this point would be "safer" and should work correctly for now.
Regarding the start page in general - please note that there's an option in the Settings to "Sync the start page". If set to "no", you will have a separate start page for the web and one for the Android app. If set to "yes", the same start page will be used on all platforms.
The sync feature could be the source of this issue and we'll surely look into it.
Ah! That's something I'll definitely try. And if necessary, I'll follow your earlier suggestion and use custom filters. But first, I'd like to see if non-synced Start Pages solve the problem for me.
Thanks again, David.
One more thing - the only time that you would actually see "Start page" as an option in the widget would be if you have a default start page so I'm unsure how can you have a start page set up within the Android app (which itself requires having it saved as a filter) and yet still see this option in the widget.
That said, it may indeed be a problem with the sync and the Android app thinks that the start page you use on the web is default because you're not using a filter. Again - we'll look into it.
Hmm. And I've been using Todoist (admittedly, off and on) for quite a while, now. No telling what I may have tried in the past.
But I did see it change automatically when I changed the Start Page filtering in the web application on my laptop. Changing the Start Page on the web to 7 Days and Overdue resulted in that change in the Start Page being synced to the Start Page configuration on my Android. Don't know if that helps or not.
According to our developers, there doesn't seem to be anything (at least obviously) wrong with it, but still - the best, most reliable option would be to set it up as a filter and just use the filter view in your widget.
We will soon also introduce saved filters to the web so that should make it more consistent :)
One other anomaly affecting the widget. When I reboot the phone for any reason, the widget is again unable to display anything. The widget also doesn't know I'm premium and so won't let me select a filter. This is quickly corrected by first launching the app, but I would appreciate it if someone could look into the behavior of the widget.
Thanks for everything, David.
Update. I don't necessarily have to reboot. I just unlocked my phone to try switching to a filter for the widget. But the widget says I'm not premium.
The label and filter-related issue (saying that you're not Premium) is an issue we're aware of and it will be fixed soon in next updates.
