Windows app crashes on startup

MJ

Hi,

I've just installed the Windows app on my work machine and when I run it the icon appears in the system tray, but when I hover over the icon it vanishes. When I check the task manager I cannot see any instances named todoist.

I am running Windows Xp Pro SP 3 and I installed the required runtime environment at the time of install.

I'm currently running my own todoist account in my browser and I'd like to run a work account from the Windows app.

Please can you advise what I can do to get the app working?

Thanks
Matt

Hello Matthews,

Please make sure that when you launch the app for the first time it isn't already running in the tray and crashes as you try to open another instance of it. If that's not the case - do you see "Todoist" in the task manager appear for a moment as you launch it, but then disappear?

Also, please tell me:
- Are you using the latest version of our app from https://todoist.com/windows
- Are you using the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Windows?
- Do you have .NET Framework installed on your computer?
- Are you behind any corporate firewalls or proxies?

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

I checked the task manager and don't see any instances of todoist when I run the app, the icon appears in the system tray and then vanishes.

- Yep, latest version downloaded from your site this afternoon.
- 32-bit
- .NET Framework 4
- Not 100%, but I would imagine the office is behind a firewall of somekind.

Thanks
Matt

Matt,

Thank you for this information, I will pass it to the developers, but before I do, please tell me - have you tried to open the app by right-clicking on it and opening it "as administrator"?

David

Hi David,

Unfortunately that option isn't available in the right click menu, I'm assuming as part of our office setup.

Thanks
Matt

Hi David,

I've just asked out SysAdmin to run the app as administrator and exactly the same behaviour occurred.

Thanks
Matt

Matthew,

So far, we can't reproduce this issue. Could you please send all log files from our app to david@todoist.com and brendon@doist.io ?

You can usually find them in C:\Document and Settings\{{username}}\Local Settings\Application Data\Todoist

David

Matthew,

Our developer said that it's missing a "crash.log" file which, at least the latest 2.6.1 version of our app should generate (assuming it's really a typical crash). Can you find it by searching for this file name?

Also, somewhere in "Application" or "System" section, you should have an Event Log. Are there any Todoist-related entries there?

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

I've done a search for crash.log including hidden and system files and the search completed without finding anything.

The Application section of the Event Viewer seems to be slightly more promising. Whenever I run Todoist the log records the following errors.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: .NET Runtime
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1027
Date: 17/12/2013

and

Hi,

Back to work now after the holidays and just wanted to check in to see if there was an update for this?

I'd dearly love to have the desktop app working on my work PC.

Thanks
Matt

Hello Ben,

Please try to install this version of our app: https://d2dq6e731uoz0t.cloudfront.net/67f363ef3a26f18de12beb9ae83636c5/as/Todoist_for_Windows.exe and let us know if the issue persists.

Thank you. I looked at the community conversation and saw that ctrl alt t is the way to get it to open. That has seemed to fix it.
