Can I open an Outlook email from a task?

After I create a task from an Outlook email, clicking on the task to open the email doesn't work.

Hello Phil,

Using the "Add email as task" option creates a local link that only Outlook understands which leads to the message of a certain ID stored in Outlook.

The only way to get access to the content of the message is by using the "Email tasks to this project feature", but this will not create a link to the message.

Please read about both options and their advantages in this post on our blog: https://todoist.com/blog/2013/01/zero-inbox-policy-with-todoist/

Best regards,
David

Using "Add Todoist" on an email within Outlook was creating clickable links within the Outlook Todoist add in, but today I'm finding that many of the links are not wokring. Do the links fail to work after a certain period?

David,

Are you moving the emails after creating the task? This is a known issue which we are working on right now. An update to fix this will be coming soon.

Regards,
Brendon.

Does the outlook add-in update automatically? How do I know when an update is available?

David,

Yes it does, but we will also update thread such as this, and you will get the email from it.

Thanks,
Brendon.

Hi David (Trey), thanks for the quick response. I read your blog post and it confirmed what I was doing - I'm highlighting an email in the inbox, clicking "add email as task", and it works fine. If I then click on the task, it opens the email just fine.

Problem arises when I move the email out of the inbox (I'm keen on the "zero inbox" idea). Clicking on the task no longer opens the email, and even if I move the email back to the inbox, it won't open.

I think you have a bug here - I believe the behaviour with Gmail is different. FYI, I'm using Outlook 2013 on Windows 8.1; the Outlook plugin for Todoist was downloaded yesterday.

Best - Phil

Phil,

Indeed, this is actually a bug in our latest version of the Outlook plugin. We've released the update to quickly fix another critical bug, but unfortunately, we've had to base the update on an earlier version which didn't handle links to mails correctly after they've been moved.

We are now working on the next update which will address all these issues permanently. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Best regards,
David

Rachel,

We are still having issues with certain users when using the plugin, and we are looking into that.

Brendon.

So, even if you move the email after adding it to the task list, it finds the email? Are you in Outlook 2013. When did it start working? Did you have to update the plug-in?

Yes, Outlook 2013/Windows 8.1

Started working a couple of months ago. Not sure, but I think I updated the plugin.
