Keyboard support in the Projects list in Quick Add is weird

AB

I prefer using my keyboard when adding tasks, which means I press Ctrl+Q to open the Quick Add panel, enter my task, Tab and enter due date, and Tab to select a project.

When the projects list is in focus though, typing a letter or two to select a project works inconsistently. Sometimes, typing the first two letter of a project name bring it up, but sometimes even the first letter doesn't work.

For example, any projects starting with 'A' in my list just don't show up when I type 'A' with the list in focus. But typing 'S' brings up the first item starting with S and 'SP' brings up the item starting with those two letters.

Why is this so?

Hello Ashish,

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this issue so far, please tell me:
- What browser are you using?
- Does the affected projects really have no other characters in it such as an asterisk * at the front or bold text formatting !! or italic formatting __?
- Are these all parent projects or sub-projects?

Best regards,
David

I'm using Chrome on Windows 8. I just checked in Firefox and it works just fine there, so I guess it has something to do with Chrome.

It happens with some (seemingly random) projects as well as sub-projects, even if they don't have any special characters in their names.

Ashish,

I've just checked in Chrome and I still can't reproduce this. Are you certain these projects don't have anything else in their names? If you edit a project, it could reveal an asterisk or maybe incorrectly parsed syntax.

Either way, we're improving this option in our upcoming next big release which should address this problem too.

Best regards,
David

Yup, I've made sure there are no special characters in the names. Anyways, I just tried the updated Windows app and it seems to do everything I need. I'm going to stick to it for now.

As for the next release, I'm very excited to see what's coming. Do you have an approximate ETA for the release?

Thanks!

Ashish,

We do not have an ETA, but it should be very soon :)

Thanks,
Brendon.

Very soon was yesterday :) I'm also wondering why the quick add thingy behaves that clumsy. Everything nice and shiny, apart from the project dropdown, which is beyond useless :-/

Looking forward to the next release. If you need a beta tester, just shout.

Cheers

A.

Not sure if it would help, but I'm also seeing the exact same issue after bringing up the dialog with Ctrl+Q either from the full web page, or from from the Toolbar with the drop-down, and also specifically with A. Is there a possibility there's a key mapping for A that doesn't get reset on the project drop down?

Hello,

The "a" key is indeed mapped for the "Add task" field. If you're within a project, it should open a new task input field (a regular field, not the Quick Add). That said, does this also happen to you if you use Quick Add while being on the "7 days" view, for example?

Best regards,
David

Yes, for the quick add I'm typically in the today or 7 days view, not a project per se. Not knowing about the key mapping, i'd always used the Ctrl Q shortcut in the project as well as it set the project correctly

Also, Control A only does a select all when i use it as that's a standard windows function key

I wasn't referring to Ctrl+A, but only "a". If you're within a project, just hit only the "a" key to see the task input field.

We'll look into this issue and it should be addressed soon with our big update to Todoist.

Best regards,
David
