Gmail/FF22 - Not Opening Emails Since Today's Outage

BS

Hello -

After today's outage, I can add emails as tasks using the sidebar, but I am unable to open the email when selecting the task in the sidebar.

I am able to open the email from a web-tab running todoist (a new tab opens and gmail loads in that tab to display the email). I am running gmail in FF.

Tasks created from emails before the outage do open their corresponding email when selected in the taskbar.

No other changes that I know of today.

If I add a website, the task then opens the website from the sidebar.

I also note that I am now unable to add a file (attachment) to a new task and I cannot add an attachment to pre- and post-outage created task - no dialog upload box.

Presuming that it is something to do with my local FF/gmail configuration and the outage, is there something I can do to reset something?

Odd that the taskbar will not open the task, but a new tab with todoist will.

I've stopped

Hi Brent,

The first things to try would be to clear the cache for Firefox, you can find this within Firefox's settings area.

I am unable to reproduce this issue, are you running the latest version of Firefox? Version 25?

Thanks,
Brendon.

Brendon -

Thanks. I updated from FF23 to FF24, cleared the cache and cleared the application cache (I am using todoist in an offline mode as well) and rebooted the machine.

Still, no joy.

Literally, was working before the outage and now is not working after the outage. Was just sitting here working...

Agree probably something here, but the outage triggered the problem. Other ideas on what to toggle, adjust, etc. Reinstall todoist with an updated version? Anything you can do from your side?

So, I logged out of my sidebar interface and tried to log back in.

After entering userid and password, I receive a full screen webpage in the sidebar with the message: (I have to scroll the sidebar left to right to see the entire message.)

"Sorry, the page you're looking for isn’t here anymore

If you reached this page from another part of todoist.com, please let us know so we can correct our mistake. "

So, I now have the sidebar working - I tried it several times after shutting down FF.

More information, if possibly helpful.

If I am in another email, and select on an email task which was created after the outage, the email linkage brings me back to the gmail inbox - so, the link is doing something, but it is only bringing me back to the gmail inbox.

Brent,

Unfortunately I am still not able to reproduce. I can create a task from an email with the Firefox extension using FF25. It will open without issue no matter the situation.

Tell me, which OS are you using? Are you adding anything to the task name when creating? Do you add any notes to it?

Thanks,
Brendon.

Windows 7 and I was not adding anything to the task name (or notes).

I did go out and disable all other plugins / add ons (although they were not affecting the operation).

So, more information:

If I am in another tab - an empty tab - and click a newly created task from the sidebar, a new tab opens and gmail pops up with the appropriate email - clicking the sidebar task.

If I am in gmail and click the same sidebar task, I only go back to the inbox.

For example, here is what the link produces in a tab outside of gmail:
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&shva=1#inbox/141ecf7da005654a

and this is the result when clicking the link while the gmail inbox is being displayed as the open tab:

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&shva=1#inbox

I presume the "141ecf7da005654a" is the gmail identifier.

I am curious why the same link click would produce different results from within the todoist sidebar depending on whether gmail is the window / tab that is the open tab.

In fact, when I hover over the sidebar task, I see that the URL is the same (in the little URL display at the bottom of the window) regardless of whether a blank window is open or whether gmail is open. However, it only opens the email when I am not in gmail.

My completed history shows 16308 tasks, so this has been working in the past...

I uninstalled and reinstalled TDI

Other ideas on what I can jiggle, hit or pound on?

I'll check back in the AM

Hello Brent,

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this issue. I've tried to add a new task from an email and it opened correctly whether Gmail was opened in a tab or not, or if the tab was empty.

Same situation when opening a very old task from an old email = also opened correctly.

Please tell me - are you using any other plugins in Firefox other than Todoist? If so - try to disable them, that includes GMail Labs Extensions and see if it helps. Also, are you using multiple Gmail accounts? Are you logged into the correct account while trying to open the email (the one from which the message originates)?

Best regards,
David

David -

Thank you for the follow-up.

I am using a quite a number of plugins other than Todoist, and probably GMail Lab Extensions. Todoist had been working with them prior to yesterday's outage. I have tried disabling all plugins and will try looking into extensions.

Yes, I am logged into the correct account, because when gmail does not have focus in a tab, selecting the task does open a new gmail in a tab and does open the corresponding email.

To provide context, I was working with FF open, there was an outage, after the outage, this situation came up - I didn't close FF or make any other changes.

I do believe it is something here, but also related to the outage. I've deleted the local cache and local Todoist off-line data.

Any other ideas on how the outage could effect my machine / local data / operation (I cannot think that lack of connectivity would result in this issue, but that is the only thing that has changed).

I'll go try the Gmail extensions, because this seems to be related to when Gmail is active in the tab.

It seems as though the entire email identifier is not being passed to Gmail when it has focus in a tab (again, when Gmail does not have focus, clicking the link opens a new tab with Gmail and corresponding email does get loaded in this new instance of Gmail).

I'll look at the extensions today and follow-up later. Any other ideas I can do on my side to reset, clear or change Todoist interaction with an in-focus gmail Tab in FF would be appreciated.

David & Brendon -

Any new ideas on this issue?

As added on to another another's thread, this again resurfaced and persists.

So, in an effort to get going again, I am trying the new version for Firefox and have a couple of questions, if I may.

First, as a note as to why I prefer the current sidebar implementation for FF and would prefer it for Chrome (and added the request to have a sidebar version for Chrome) - it is all about number of clicks:
- I don't have to click it to open or activate
- I don't have to scroll to resume in the list
(and I don't like the load time)

If I am working my way through a list of tasks (e.g., searching for the one I cannot find), with the sidebar, when it is working, I simply click them in order one after another. In Chrome and, presumably now in the future FF (which I would not like), I need to open Todoist (CLICK), scroll to the place where I was (CLICK and I NEED TO REMEMBER THE PRIOR ONE I JUST CLICKED) and then open the desired item (CLICK).

But I digress...

My questions for the new FF version:
1.) how do I add a web-page?
2.) how do I set it to not open a new tab?
3.) how do I reposition / resize the pop-up?

If I am on a web page, I don't see how to "Add website as task". In my (preferred) sidebar version, which is always visible, I select the "+" and then "Add website as task". With the new version, I only see the access on the lower right (which obscures my inbox when open) when I am in a gmail tab.

When I open a task (yes, the tasks which don't open in gmail in the released version of TDI do open from the new version), the task does not open in my inbox, but creates a new instance of gmail in a new tab. For the user who laments about the efficiency of clicks, I now have another CLICK - I need to close the new tab.

Lastly, in using the new version, when I pop-up the UI, the default size covers a portion of my inbox - now, I opened the task linked to an email to skim / read the email. I don't want to have the pop-up cover a portion of the inbox. (Yes, another CLICK to close it out to read the email and then to start the process again.) How do I resize / reposition so upon opening the target is not obscured?

As you might gather, part of my workflow is to quickly click through tasks searching for the intended email - a number of responses to the same email from different people are each different tasks. Clicking through the different tasks are much faster than modifying the identifier when creating the task and/or each of their responses provide some unique information which needs to be pulled from their email (e.g., dollars or days remaining).

Please consider my comments not so much as "complaints", but as a user who very much likes the product and wants to offer one person's perspective on their user experience.

First and foremost, I would like the sidebar version to be offered in Chrome (no load time and fewer clicks). Absent that, I would like the sidebar version functionality to work in Firefox (including uploading files into a task).

Hello Brent,

To answer your questions:

1. If you're on a web-site, you'll see "add website as task" both in the Quick Add menu and at the bottom of your task list in a project, next to "Add task".

2. Please clarify - how and when does it open a new tap exactly?

3. Unfortunately, you can't reposition the FIrefox sidebar, but to resize it, please drag it by its right edge.

Note - I'm referring to the Firefox plugin that can be downloaded and installed at https://todoist.com/firefox . Our new Gmail plugin is not a sidebar and will not work anywhere else than within Gmail.

As for offering a sidebar version in Chrome - that's unfortunately beyond our control, we hope one day Chrome will allow developers add sidebars as plugins, right now this is how the browser works :(

David

I'm using Chrome on a MAC. I've disabled ALL labs and when I click on a todo saved from Gmail it will not open the email so I can see what I'm to do. This was working a while back. Not real happy I paid for premium and things aren't working.

Hello Rick,

Please confirm - if you open your browser, then go to Gmail and don't click on any message, just open our plugin and then click on the linked task, does it open the correct message in a new tab?

If so, that's an issue we're looking into. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Rick,

You get a new blank tab if you do that? Do you see any URL in this new tab? Does it look like the URL that you see when you open any email in GMail containing the ID of the message?

Rick,

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but the more information we can gather about this issue, the faster and better we can assist you in solving it or fix the bug.

That said, could you please post the URL here (it won't allow anyone to see the linked message anyway) or at least confirm if it's formatted the same way a Gmail message is? Does it contain /u/ in it?

Best regards,
David

Rick,

Thank you for this information, I'll pass it to our developers, but are you using Google Apps with multiple Gmail accounts? This link seems to be much longer than the regular links to a message which normally look like this:

https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox/142e128a89860a28

We do host our domain based email with Google. I'm only creating todo's from my account. What's confusing is that this was working when I first came onboard and I just noticed it not working now.

Any news on this? I have todo's coming up with links to emails that won't open, so I have no details of what to do, or for whom.

Rick,

We're unsure why it happens. That is - why the URL to your messages looks like this and as long as it does, it may affect the "Add email as task" feature which expects the URL format as I've mentioned above.

Are you certain that in the past Gmail was showing you the exact same long URL as you've mentioned in your previous replies?

David

I don't know if it was showing this long URL. All I know is that it was working and now I have no idea what I'm suppose to do when these pop up.

Would it make any difference that I have the Todoist Chrome extension and the Todoist Gmail addon? I've tried disabling Chrome and it doesn't make any difference.

I've also turned off all LABS and plugins to no avail.

At this point, I'm thinking of asking for a refund if it can't be solved.

Thanks.

Rick,

Using both plugins shouldn't be an issue. Our developers will certainly look into this soon after the upcoming big update (sharing, delegation, saved filters etc.). Nonetheless, if you prefer not to wait and receive a refund, please send us the order reference ID of your payment.
