PDF files uploaded as Task Notes no longer display as Notes

RM

David/Brendon,

I just uploaded a PDF file to a Task as a Note to the Task and when I attempted to view the PDF, which has always opened within the Browser (Chrome Version 29.0.1547.66 m running on Windows 7 64-bit), it instead downloaded to my default Download folder.

Is this an expected new behavior? (I hope not, as I'd prefer to view the PDF files; I've already created them on the PC in order to upload them to Todoist)

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you should have any questions.

Best regards,
Randy Miller

Hello Randy,

I've just checked on the same Chrome version as you're using (which is the latest) and I can't reproduce it. When I click on a link to an uploaded PDF in a task note, it opens the PDF in a new tab in Chrome.

Please tell me - did you install any PDF reader lately or maybe on the contrary - you've uninstalled it? Or did you install any download-related plugins (to speed up downloads, for example) to your browser which may affect it?

Best regards,
David

David,

Thanks for the prompt response.

Yes, in fact, I installed Adobe Acrobat XI Standard earlier this week.

Older Notes containing PDF files show the same icon in the Note (now has a 'downward facing arrow'), but clicking on those links open the PDF within the browser. It is only newly uploaded PDF files that are being downloaded.

I've tried right-clicking the link and choosing 'Open link in new tab', 'Open link in new window' and 'Open link in incognito window', but all choices result in the PDF file being downloaded.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you should have any questions.

Randy,

I'm sorry, but I still can't reproduce this and I'm using Windows 8 which has its own native PDF reader which usually tries to open every single PDF document by default, but in Todoist's case, it doesn't and a new tab opens up with the document.

I've tried to upload another new file now and it's a file I've never opened in Chrome before so it couldn't be cached in any way and again - I lick on the link and it opens the PDF in a new tab in Chrome.

Please try to open Adobe Acrobat and go to its properties and check if there's an option to decide whether you want all PDF documents to be opened by it or allow browsers to open them. It's possible that the Acrobat does that, I'm not sure why it would do it just for new files, but again - I can't reproduce this and I'm not aware of any changes made to this feature that would force the document to be downloaded, we're just putting a simple link there and the browser or any other software should decide what to do with it.

Best regards,
David

David,

I think I may have found the problem! I inadvertently saved the file using both parentheses and an ampersand! (why? I can't tell you!)

Oh yes, a new PDF uploaded without such characters *is* properly opened in the browser.

When I copy and look at the link address for the PDF with the 'special characters' in the names, the file name is truncated at the ampersand.

Would you please see if you can duplicate this behavior?

My file name is "Telegram questions (EETAM-Wixom; DDC 1US subassembly) 20130913.pdf". If you rename any of your PDF files to this name and upload it to Todoist, does it display in Chrome, or does it download?

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you should have any questions.

Randy,

Thank you for this information, now I can reproduce this. It's not as much an issue with this particular name, but rather the fact that we use this format:

https://google.com (Google)

to create URLs where anything in the brackets becomes the anchor text for the link. I will pass it to the developers and we'll look into it.

David
