add email as task option is gone.

opened thunderbird one day and voila! add email as task option is gone. Is adding email as task is a premium feature only? but I was able to use it just recently.

Hi Sola,

Have you recently installed any extensions for Thunderbird? Such as the "Thunderbird Conversations" extension? Also, did you install an update to our plugin recently?

If not, please try clearing the cache for Firefox & Thunderbird and trying again. Though, this feature is indeed a Premium one and this has not changed recently, so I am unsure why you'd have this ability.

Thanks,
Brendon.

I thought the add email as task feature part of the free version... there are loads that I am unable to access though, that I understand is exclusive to the premium version. Colours, reminders, backups, notes, etc.

The only feature I actually use is this. the add email as task. with that alone I'm good. Hoooping you guys won't take that away from the free version.. though it's actually because of the being unable to use the notes and reminders that I intend to purchase the full one.

I suggest you keep the add task as email in the free version though. It is a very good tool to get people to convert to premium.

two cents from a todoist fan.

I don' understand how this works. I wanted to add emails to the different projects I have so that I can keep everything organized. How can I link emails that have a connection to a certain task?

Hello Laurence,

There are two ways to manage emails with Todoist - by linking them or by sending them to a project (to convert them to tasks).

Both option and their advantages have been described in detail in this post on our blog: https://todoist.com/blog/2013/01/zero-inbox-policy-with-todoist/

I use the Preview Pane gmail lab http://cl.ly/R3mN and it looks like this breaks the ability to add an email as a task with the Chrome extension.

This makes my email look like this http://cl.ly/R43L, a view I much prefer.

When I turn the preview pane lab off I'm able to add an email as a task. Any plans to support adding an email as a task with preview pane on? Or know of any workarounds? I really want to be able to link directly to an email from a task.

Hello David Trey,

I managed to forward message to todoist task from my inbox. However linking messages to tasks i can not because I do not find the add email as task option as shown on the blog. This button does not exist when I open the todoist page.
how do i do it in this case?

Hello,

@Christopher - unfortunately, we can't fix this issue as the only way for our plugin to know that you have an email selected and keep track of which one it is, is to look at the URL which contains the ID of the particular email. However, the Preview Pane blocks the URL and it doesn't change as you navigate through your mails. Please contact the authors of the Preview Pane asking them to enable a dynamic URL as it is by default on Gmail otherwise any plugin that relies on it will not work.

@Laurence - please note that this button is visible only when you use one of our browser plugins. Then, when you open an email, you will see it at the bottom of your task list within a project or in the "Quick Add" menu, unless you're using the "Preview Pane" Labs extension in which case it won't be available for the reasons I've mentioned to Christopher.

David

Hello this is all very new to me. what is the preview pane? How do i download this browser plugin? I am using chrome on a mac is it possible that this plugin does not download for mac?

Laurence,

Our plugin should work on Chrome for Mac. Please download and install it from: http://todoist.com/chrome and then take a look at this short video showing how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfslbgUv4F4

The "Preview Pane" is something else, it's an extension for Gmail and it's known for interfering with our plugin because it blocks the URL of the page from updating as you read your mails. If you don't have it then our plugin will work fine.

Laurence,

Unfortunately, we don't have a plugin for Outlook for Mac, but we may consider developing it in the future and you're welcome to vote for this request in our Votebox: http://todoist.com/Vote/showProposal/275/

For now, as a workaround, you could try to use the option to send emails as tasks. They won't link to the particular message, but they will contain the entire message in a task note. For more information, right-click on any project and click "Email tasks to this project".

David

Hi all,

I've just bought the Premium version as I remember I could use this function - add Email as task. But I remember having a shortcut to doing so.
I have a Chrome app, and whenever I was in my Gmail email. I could just press a set of keys and this would open a new task with the email link already there. can't find which shortkey it was:(

Hello Kamila,

Unfortunately, there never was a shortcut for the "Add email as task" input in Todoist. There is a shortcut Ctrl+Q which will open the Quick Add box, but then you'll also need to use the "Add email as task" option from there.

David

I'm using Gmail in Chrome, using the Chrome plugin for ToDoist. The 'Add email as task' option is not showing up when I go to create a task. I was able to use it when I used ToDoist with Outlook.

Let me know how I can get this to show up in Gmail.

Hello Dorothy,

Please tell me - do you use the "Preview Pane" Labs extension on GMail? If so, then unfortunately, this feature can't be used when this extension is active because it hides the ID of the email from the URL and therefore there's no way for our app to know if and what email you're selecting or viewing.

David

I do not use this add on/lab, no. Unless it is something in the General or Inbox settings I am not seeing?

Dorothy,

Please confirm, you have opened an email, and not selected, and clicked on the TD icon beside the address bar, then hit the + sign and see no "add email as task"?

Thanks,
Brendon.

Dorothy,

Please hit the 3 dots in the top right corner of Chrome, Tools --> Extensions. Then find Todoist, and hit the "Show Button" option if it's there. If you can't find Todoist, it still needs to be installed. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/todoist-to-do-list-and-ta/jldhpllghnbhlbpcmnajkpdmadaolakh

TD is definitely there in Chrome. It shows as enabled and I can open it in Chrome just fine. I just don't get any sign of it in my gmail, which leads me to think that it would have to be installed 'in' gmail. Is that possible?

Just as it gets installed 'in' Outlook when used there. But still now sign of anything TD in my actual gmail.

Thanks and let me know!

Dorothy,

Please send me a screenshot of your Chrome. In a previous reply you said there was no TD icon beside your address bar, which would be needed for this to work with Gmail. You can send a shot to brendon@doist.io or david@todoist.com

There would be nothing installed within Gmail, the extension for Chrome (TD icon with tasks count, beside address bar) is what is needed to accomplish the "add email as task".

Thanks,
Brendon.

Where is the setting for Preview View in Gmail? I don't see it in General or Inbox settings. I'll send on the screen shot in any event.

Dorothy,

The setting for Preview Pane would be higher up then which you show in the Screenshot. It's a Gear icon in the top right corner. Click the gear icon, Settings, and then choose Labs. It would be chosen in there. Though I do not believe that is your issue.

The screenshot you showed was of your Gmail, not of Chrome. I was hoping for a shot such as this. http://i.imgur.com/gMJFL5n.png As you can see, the red TD icon with 14 with it. Please confirm if you have this (number varies of course), if you do not, please follow the instructions I listed above to enable or install the extension. If it is installed, and there is no "Show Button" button, please uninstall it and try reinstalling.

Thanks,
Brendon.

Dorothy,

So please confirm, you open a message in gmail, click on that Red TD icon, then hit the + icon to add a new task, then choose "add email as task'? Or does the add email to task button not appear?

Thanks,
Brendon.

Ahhh, I see what is happening. I use TD in pop out mode, not hanging down in Chrome from the TD button.

When in pop out mode, there is no 'add email as task' option.

Any way to have this functionality in pop out mode? It really doesn't work for me to have it hanging in the upper right of my screen.

David Trey staff

Dorothy,

Unfortunately, it won't work if the extension is popped out because then it opens up in a separate browser window and our plugin needs to see the URL of the email within the same window which is only possible when it's accessed through the TD icon.

The alternative solution would be to forward/sent emails as task instead of link to them. This is a Premium-only feature and you can read more details about it and compare it to the other option in this post on our blog: https://todoist.com/blog/2013/01/zero-inbox-policy-with-todoist/

I'm a premium user who uses Gmail in Safari. I used to have the "add email as task" function but it no longer appears. I have also not been receiving my emailed tasks when I try to do that work around.

Hello Sarah,

Please tell me - have you activated any GMail Labs extensions lately especially the "Preview Pane" extension?

Did the "Add email as task" option disappear both from the "Quick Add" box as well as the link at the bottom of your task list within a project? And can you see "Add website as task" instead or is this gone too?

David
