Whenever I start Todoist on a new device or a device I haven't told not to ask me the time setting again it assumes I'm at -4:00 instead of -5:00.
Anyone know why this is?
Whenever Todoist asks you to adjust the timezone, it's highly recommended to choose Yes otherwise all your tasks may have not only incorrect times, but even incorrect dates.
Are you sure that the time delay is incorrectly detected? For example - are you currently in a Daylight Saving Time zone and the time is really one hour off (in case of DST Todoist will see it as -5 even though physically you can be in the -4 zone)? Also, is the correct time zone selected on the device with which you're using Todoist?
My time zone where I am physically (also chosen correctly on device) is (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada), I'm currently in daylight savings time. According to http://wwp.daylight-saving-time.com/canada/ , its between March 10 & November 3 this year.
So I think this is what is happening then. As the saying goes "spring forward, fall back", so Todoist is receiving information from my computer sayings its the -5:00 but 1 hour forward. Todoist in turn interprets that as being -4:00 instead of properly just adding one hour to the time.
On your device, you should have the time zone set not according to the DST, but the actual UTC-based delay and then the device, if it has "adjust DST settings" enabled, it will adjust the time without affecting the time zone settings.
That said, are the times of your tasks set correctly when you use Todoist's suggested time zone?
My devices are laptops and computers running Windows. There's no option for doing what you said, its simply an on off switch of whether or not to take into account daylights saving time.
As for the "Times" on my tasks, there are no times, only dates(which are correct). I never thought it possible to add specific times to the todoist, especially seeing as its simply a reminding tool of sorts and not an alarm system.
On Windows 7, and 8 and I believe earlier, if you click on the clock in the bottom right corner, to bring up the larger clock, there should be a change date & time setting link.
Clicking this will bring up a window with some options. One of those should be "change timezone.." If you let me know which version of Windows you are running I can give better directions :)
Even without times set to a task, they are set to the date, and so that can be off by some depending. The only reason Todoist should be asking to change to that time zone would be your computer is set to it.
I'm running windows 7, and the only DST option that is available is the "Automatically adjust for DST" one, which I'm not going to disable. Although it doesn't really make sense that the automatic adjustment would cause that problem.
So to confirm, you do not see these types of options when you go into your clock settings? http://i.imgur.com/OlnHnHZ.jpg. You can find the instructions to do so here: http://blogmines.com/blog/2009/07/14/how-to-change-system-timezone-in-windows-7/
DST does not affect the Timezone you are using, as DST is available for all Timezones. The Timezone is in question, not the automatic adjustment for DST.
I see those options, they just have nothing to do with daylight savings time, which was stated as being the issue. Although I did test out my theory that it was windows' "automatic DST adjust" feature, and it didn't do anything.
As I stated in my previous comment I'm in (UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada). This is the correct time zone, I'm physically in this time zone with my body mind and computers. However, Todoist thinks I'm one hour forward from that.
I am sorry for the repeating questions, but a slightly different Timezone would cause this problem, and is more likely the issue then DST. Which is why I wanted you to confirm that those settings are indeed Eastern Time.
If they are, then we do indeed have an issue. If both computers (all devices) are indeed on EST, then we need to look into the server side.
Please also, give logging out, and clearing the cache for your browsers a try. Also, if you edit one of your tasks, are they set for the correct date you had originally?
Sorry for the troubles.
To confirm, yes I'm in UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada). I'm in the Toronto area which is in the dead center of the time zone.
When I get home I'll log out of all the devices and see if deleting the cache works. So far though there has been no issues with the dates of the tasks, probably because the default time of the datetime variable is midnight, and 1 hour after that is still the same day.
I'll keep you posted.
One more time, just to sort it out - you are in the GMT-5 zone and in DST time which puts the time 1 hour forward, correct?
In that case, technically, your time is now -4 hours relatively to the UTC time and therefore, when Todoist asks you if you want to use a -4 time, please agree to it and it will all work fine.
Alright will do, might want to add a footer that states that it takes into account daylight savings time in the detection though.
But thanks for the quick reply, definitely appreciate the help.
