Todoist (2.3.1) for Windows has stopped working

On Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) - I updated Todoist to 2.3.1 and it won't start. Each time I get a pop up that says:

Todoist for Windows has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program.
-> Close the program

I've rebooted. I've uninstalled and reinstalled. Nothing restores it to working order.

I can access Todoist through the web interface as well as Firefox/Thunderbird.

Hello Peter,

Unfortunately, we can't reproduce this issue. Please uninstall the app, but make sure that before you uninstall it, it is completely closed, that is - quit it through the system tray (notifications area).

Then, re-download the installer from https://todoist.com/windows (save it locally) and run it "as administrator".

Best regards,
David

Same machine...win 7 64-bit...same problem. Tried uninstall, reboot, install as admin...nothing. It won't run.

I uninstalled 2.3.1 and reinstalled 1.9, works beautifully now!

There's something wrong with 2.3.1.

Paul,

Unfortunately, we can't recreate this issue and we're able to successfully install the latest version without such issues. If the latest version has asked you to allow it to send an error report, please agree. Other that that, there's unfortunately, no way to identify this issue based on this error message.

Best regards,
David

David, I've already tried a clean uninstall and reinstall.

There's no obvious option to send an error report.

If you *could* reproduce it how would you proceed to debug it? Can I perform those steps instead of you?

Peter,

I've notified the developers and if there's any specific information that would help us identify the issue, I will let you know. Sorry for the inconvenience.

David

David,

I'm literally in the exact situation as Peter. There are no errors. It simply will not load. I click on the desktop icon, nothing. I click on the icon in the start menu, nothing. I click load after install, nothing.

I even went to the task manager to see if it was running as a process and blocking itself from loading. There's nothing in the process tab related to todoist. It's weird, because I don't recall the last time a software didn't do at least something, error or otherwise.

Hello Paul,

Please tell me, do you have Microsoft .NET Framework 4 installed on your computer? If not, please install it and let me know if the issue persists.

Hi Paul,

We would still suggest re-installing .NET Framework 4 even if it was installed before. Please give that a try.

Also, we are un-able to reproduce this but obviously there are some cases of this happening. I was hoping you'd be willing to send me a screenshot of your Task Manager as there could be something conflicting with Todoist that we do not see. Please send that to brendon@doist.io.

Thanks,
Brendon.

This is still failing for me. Anecdotally it's when I'm using a proxy. In other words, it appeared to start-up and work fine when directly accessing the Internet. As soon as I work on our company WAN or through a VPN it fails.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for the clarification - if you're using a proxy, then it's a known issue and we hope to fix it in future updates. If you can only connect this way, please use the web-app at https://todoist.com instead.

Best regards,
David

Hi, I had the exact same issue - did not work (same errors as other folks) when connected to work network. Earlier version referenced in another thread works with the work network however:

Would be really nice to be able to download the new version and have it work with the work network however so I can get new features/updates/debugging.

Hi David,

Just tried downloading the new update and it still doesn't work on my computer. Do you anticipate being able to resolve this work proxy issue? (2.2.1.1 works, but would be great to get updates).

Best,
Julian

I installed the version from that link, it crashes when a proxy is configured as before.

Windows reports it as being 2.3.0.5 which I would expect would be an older version, the version where I first saw the issue was 2.3.1.

I also tried the current Windows version from https://todoist.com/windows which Windows also reported as being 2.3.0.5. It also crashes when a proxy configured.

any update on potential release date? I would like to buy a premium version but I need to make sure the free one works ok. I have downloaded the previous version of the soft for windows (as mentioned by Julian Malinak) and it works but the latest one doesn't.
I'm working today from home but via a VPN connection. Will try tomorrow when in the office network

Hello Mark,

We're sorry for the delays, we're working on a rewrite of this app which will address this and other issues.

For now, as a workaround, you can always use the web-app and our browser plugins. The plugins can even be snapped out of their fixed positions so you can use them in a separate mini browser window.

Best regards,
David

Hi, I also have this issue.
Removing the proxy setting cleared it up for me.
In my work environment a proxy is required though.

Richard

thanks David. web app is unfortunately not what I can use.
Anyway I'll be monitoring this page to see when the new release comes out. I understand there isn't a planned date yet.

Nice that you can snap out the chrome add in. I can't get the stand-alone app to work any longer, but snapping out works just as well.

We've updated our Windows app so that it should handle proxies correctly. It always worked during our tests, but we wold greatly appreciate if you could install it and confirm if it fixed your issues: https://d2dq6e731uoz0t.cloudfront.net/29465f3a4c6c7f36ed42d9a1c6b294d0/as/Todoist_for_Windows.exe
