Windows app won't launch

DM

Hi, wondering if you can help me; your windows app has stopped working on my computer (Windows 7). It stopped working after I was prompted to update it recently. I have uninstalled and re-installed the app, and tried launching it from taskbar, desktop, etc, but no luck. Hope you have some suggestions, as I've come to rely on it really heavily! Cheers.

Hi Dom,

Could you please tell me if there were any error messages, did the app just not start? Did it start and then crash?

Are you running 32bit or 64bit Windows 7?

Thanks,
Brendon.

I am experiencing the same problem on Win XP, 32bit. There are no error messages but my version of task manager shows multiple instances of Todoist.exe running - about 15!

Please try re-starting your system, let me know if those instances of Todoist.exe are still there once your back up.

So to confirm, TD does not run at all, no windows open or anything, just the task manager instances?

Thanks,
Brendon.

Hi Brendon,

I'm running 32 bit. No errors, the window doesn't even launch. When I try and launch it, there's about a 1-second moment where it looks like it's launching (sometimes the icon even appears briefly in the notification area of the taskbar before disappearing), but then nothing happens at all.

No multiple instances of Todoist running, unlike Stan described.

Hi Dom,

I am un-able to re-produce any issue like this.

Please try un-installing the app, re-booting your system. Re-installing the app.

Thanks,
Brendon.

I'm having the same issue as Brendon: "No errors, the window doesn't even launch. When I try and launch it, there's about a 1-second moment where it looks like it's launching (sometimes the icon even appears briefly in the notification area of the taskbar before disappearing), but then nothing happens at all."

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program, and I have confirmed that I am running .NET 4.

What else can I try?

Hi Linda,

Are you behind a Firewall, or any type of software that could block an application from working?

Please close the app, un-install the application, clear the cache for Internet Explorer, use CCleaner to clear system (not necessary, but could help), reboot. Re-install.

We are working on this, but we have yet to find a solution.

Thanks,
Brendon.

I'm havnig the same issue as Dom and Linda. I uninstalled and re-installed and now the "print" window opens when i open the program but there's no option to return back to my home page or any other views.

Korin,

In the tray area, hit the TD icon, and choose "home" if that does not work, hit "logout" instead.

Thanks,
Brendon.

The problem is there is no tray area when the program loads--only a print page with no other clickable options besides to add or edit a task. I just uninstalled again and deleted any associated files from my computer. I'm going to reboot and re-install and keep you posted. I wish I could send a screenshot.

Hi Korin,

You can send a screenshot to brendon@doist.io.

When the app loads, there is no TD icon in the Windows System Tray?

Thanks,
Brendon.

No, there are no icons at all. It's the print window that is launching.

Korin,

If you open up the Task Manager, try closing Todoist.exe and re-starting the app.

Also, please clarify, did you follow the instructions above for re-installing the app? Clearing IE's cache is important.

Also, just to clarify, when I say system tray, in the bottom-right corner of your Windows system, next to the date/time, is the notifications area, there may be an arrow allowing to you show some icons, that's where the TD icon should be while the Todoist app is opened. Please confirm if the TD icon is not showing up in this location.

Thanks,
Brendon.

I love Todoist but in the week since discovering and begining to use it I have had so much trouble. I have reinstalled it, followed the above advice, installed an update which I found on another post and it works for a little time until the next failed attempt. Sooo frustrating!!!

I can see here that the support provided for the program is excellent but there is no way I will pay for the premium version while I continue to have so many problems.

Hello Jodie,

We're very sorry for the inconvenience. Please try to install this version of the app: https://d2dq6e731uoz0t.cloudfront.net/de7f1d308a5af006096dbaecd2aa6130/as/Todoist_for_Windows.exe - it's the latest pre-release version that addresses these issues and we've tested it thoroughly and it should work without any problems.

Best regards,
David

Please un-install the version you have, clear the cache for Internet Explorer (the app uses it) and install this updated un-released version of our app.

Please try running the installer once more, right click on it and run as admin when doing so. Let me know if installing it two or three times gets the application to work properly.

Tito, we do not have any experience with Windows 8.1 at this time, so there could be related issues unknown. We do plan to support 8.1, and it's possible this issue you are having is un-related, but just so you know.

Thanks,
Brendon.

Thanks.

It's still broken on this 8.1 PC even with several uninstalls and reinstalls as admin. It works on another 8.1, so I'm not sure.

I hope that you if you see more hits on this issue you figure it out :)

Our latest un-released version has been working without issue, we are un-sure why these issues have appeared all of a sudden.

Please un-install the app, run CCleaner (if you can), clear the cache for IE, reboot. Then install the app again.

We are looking into this, but any information you could give might help, such as are you using any proxies? Any firewalls, antivirus, or other apps that could interfere?

Thanks,
Brendon.

Tried installing 3 times as admin, with no results.

My setup is a Windows 7 x64 with the most recent updates installed and IE10. It's running .NET Framework 4.5, Windows Security Essentials and belongs to an Active Directory domain. The user I'm logged in is both a local and domain administrator.

I've succesfully installed and ran the stock setup on my home PC (Windows 8 x64), so I'm suspecting it could be an issue with the application and Active Directory.

Hi,

Update!

Discomfort of not able to use Windows App lead me to a previous (?) version - found here- https://d2dq6e731uoz0t.cloudfront.net/0759b8fb4bef4073670fe318cb0c2b99/as/Todoist_for_Windows.RC.exe

Installed and seems stable, it is asking for an update which I have deferred. Will monitor and try and post an update soon.

On Win 7 x64 IE10 have experienced same intermittent launch problems with v2.3.0.5 originally reported in this thread. Problems resolved for me by always logging out of Todoist before any Windows hibernation or sleep step, and on and subsequent relaunch of Todoist, always running Todist as administrator. First launch of Todoist after full reboot always launches correctly under user privileges.

I have the same issue and I can duplicate it everytime. Sorry if this was mentioned, I didn't read every post above. I scanned them :)

The app is open and works fine. If I close it, then try to reopen it, it won't open. Tried it several times, still won't open. But if I go to my Task Manager and look at application processes, there are 3 Todoist.exe open. I close all 3, then try to open it again, it opens and functions fine. But if I close it again, same thing will happen.

Will this be fixed in updated version? I have latest one from https://todoist.com/windows

Using Windows 7.

Thanks,
Lorne

Hello Lorne,

If you close the app, but have it set to "Hide to tray" upon closing, then clicking on the "X" button will only close the window, but let the app run in the notifications area (system tray) where you'll see the TD icon which allows you to use global keyboard shortcuts (as configured in the right-click -> Configuration menu).

That said, if that's the case, then after you close the app to the tray, you'll have to bring it back from there (with Ctrl+Alt+T, by default) and not try to launch it again while running.

Best regards,
David
