Settings Problem with Default Reminder

BH

I have changed the Default Reminder setting in Todoist Settings to "No Default Reminder". However, the next time I check (maybe a day or more later) the Default Reminder setting is "SMS Notifications".

This has happened several times.

Help me understand what is happening.

Thank you.

Hello Bill,

Unfortunately, we're unsure why this happens. Please tell me - have you been using any third-party mobile apps for Todoist or our official mobile apps or changed any settings through our apps? Also, were you online when you've made this change and can you reproduce it again - does the setting change right away after you change it?

Best regards,
David

Hello David,

Here are interfaces/devices I use to access Todoist:
.. the official Todoist Android app on a Nexus 7 over Wifi only
.. the official Todoist phone app on an LG Optimist S over Wifi and 3G
.. using the web interface on a Chrome browser
.. using the official Todoist Chrome extension
.. on a few occurrences using the Todoist Mac application

I also use the Nexus 7 Android app offline extensively and sync when a Wifi connection is available.

Almost certainly I have changed Settings using the Todoist mobile apps although I cannot relate exactly when or what was changed.

Several months ago and before the official Todoist Android app was robust, I installed a couple of third party Todoist apps on the Nexus 7. I opened each app once, surveyed the interface, did not like it, and uninstalled those apps.

Most recently I made the change to Settings...Reminders using the online web interface on a Chrome browser. That change was this morning. The Reminders Setting has not yet changed to SMS Notifications. However, several times over the past month I have changed the Reminder Setting only to observe a day or two later that the Reminder Setting reverted to SMS Notification. To answer your question, the setting does not change right away but will change within a few days...this is reproducible.

May not be any clues in this information but I hope it helps.

Bill,

We've set some of our test accounts to "No default reminder" and we'll check if it changes within the next days.

Unfortunately, the best way to reproduce this issue is to know what exactly triggers it, therefore if you notice at any time that a certain action might have caused this change, please let us know (for example - using the app on mobile, adding a reminder through mobile, adding a task with a due time on mobile etc.).

Best regards,
David

Mine always defaults to SMS reminders, even though I have no mobile phone configured. The Email option seems to stick, but "Mobile push notification" is the default whenever I actually try to set a reminder.

I can't tell you how many times I've accidentally set one that would have gone out into the ether had I not caught myself and switched the type. It's unacceptable to have a feature people use when they are reminding themselves of something important be so broken.

I only use the web app via Chrome. I do have the extension installed, but do not use it.

Hello,

We're sorry to hear that, but we still can't reproduce this issue. Whatever reminder type we set as default in Settings -> Reminders, it will remain and never change. We've tested each option for numerous days and they all seem to work correctly.

Please tell me - are you using any plugins in your browser (ad-blockers, script-blockers) which may affect the dynamic sending of data through a website, that is - auto-saving the default reminder choice you make in the Settings?

Best regards,
David

I turned off my blocker; same result. And my selection always saves anyway; every time I return to Settings, it's already set as Email.

I misphrased earlier, as I thought mobile push notifications and SMSes were the same.

"Mobile push notifications" is greyed out in the Settings dropdown. However, when I attempt to set a reminder, "Mobile push notifications" is the default option. Note that this is an option I cannot even choose as my default because I don't have a phone connected, but it shows up as the default anyway. Something is wonky with your code if it decides in one place that I can't choose an option and in another that it should be the default, even though I've specified in the Settings and the settings stick.

And why the option for SMS notifications isn't greyed out, seeing as how I don't have a phone connected to my account, I don't quite get either.

Again, we can't confirm this issue, we've tried everything we can and not once has the default reminder setting reverted back.

As for the "push notification" issue, I will pass it to the developers. It is shown in the Reminders menu always by default regardless of your default reminder settings, but if you don't use our mobile app, it should be grayed out also in the Reminder menu.

David

I have a similar problem. In Settings I have my default reminder set to email but when I set a reminder it always defaults to mobile push. If I'm setting the reminder manually I can change it but when the reminder is created automatically, I have to remember to delete the mobile push reminder and add one for email.

I'm using Firefox and todoist.com as my primary interface.

Hello Cyndy,

Unfortunately, we can't reproduce this issue. Having email set as the default reminder method, when you add a task with a due time, it will have a "30 minutes before" reminder set to email.

If you can trigger this issue again and know what exact steps need to be takes so we can reproduce them please let us know.

David

Hi David,

I realized when I checked again that part of my problem was me. The automatic reminder is in fact being set correctly. However, I expected that when I set a reminder manually that the default would be email, because of the default of email in Settings and that's not the case. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to work, and I just need to remember to change it.

Hello,

Here is one failure scenario. The default reminder setting does not change when I use the web or the Chrome extension. If I login to Todoist using the Android app on a Nexus 7, the default reminder setting is changed.

Is this a bug in the Android app? Or is there something I can do on the Android app to solve the problem?

Thank you.

Hello Bill,

Please clarify:
- What reminder method to you have set at the beginning?
- You log into the Android app and then change the default reminder from which and to which method?
- You log into the web-app and how is the default reminder set in the Settings there?

Best regards,
David

No default reminder was set at the beginning. This was set using the web app in Chrome browser. The reminder setting remained unchanged for a couple of weeks.

I logged into the Android app on the Nexus 7, marked a task complete, then checked the Reminder setting. It had changed to SMS Notification. I did not change it using the Android app.

Then logging out of the Android app and into the web app, the Reminder notification shows SMS Notification.

Thank you for checking this.

Bill,

Based on your description, you've checked the reminder settings on your phone and it showed SMS as default, you didn't change it, and you went to the web-app through Chrome and it also showed SMS?

If so, at what point did the issue occur? Please describe step-by-step how and when did the default reminder change.

Best regards,
David

Hello David,

I did not explain clearly.

I set the reminder setting using the web app.

The reminder setting did not change for several weeks. I was using the web app only during that time.

Then I logged into Todoist using the Android app on a Nexus 7. The reminder setting was changed.

Is that a better explanation?

I'm thinking something on the Android changed the reminder setting. Could that be possible?

Bill,

Unfortunately, we can't reproduce it so far, we'll soon publish further updates to our Android app, if the issue will persist in the new version, please let us know. Sorry for the inconvenience.

David
