How do you sort by Priority in the Today view?

How do you sort by priority in the today view? I am able to sort in the project view by clicking on the gear and the sorting, but I have found no way to do this in the Today view.

Hello Jeff,

All tasks in the today view are automatically sorted by due time first and then by priority.

It does not seem to work that way for me. I checked the due date for the tasks in my today view and they are all due today (Feb. 4), but they are not in order of priority. They seem to be randomly ordered.

Jeff,

Please tell me:
- Do your tasks have a due time, such as "tod at 2pm" or "ev day @ 11:15" etc.?
- If not, please try to log out, clear your browser's cache and Todoist's offline data (may need to be removed manually in some browsers), reload the browser, log back in and let me know if the issue persists.
- Can you reproduce this issue in at least one different browser (if so - which browsers did you use)?
- Have you ever reordered any tasks in the "today" view manually? If so - the order of priorities may be influenced. If you reorder them by priority now, this new order should be saved and new tasks with the same priority added to the new positions.

-None of my tasks have due times. Of my 18 tasks due today, 2 of them have a due date of 'Every Weekday' and one is 'Every Monday'.
-I logged out, cleared the browser cache and Todoist's offline data by removing the Chrome Todoist extension, closed the browser, reloaded it and re-logged into Todoist and have the same issue.
-I use Google Chrome but I get the same thing with Explorer (ver. 9). I also did the steps above with Explorer and get the same results.
-I have to reorder the tasks in the 'today' view manually everyday because they do not automatically do it. When I re-order and todo's carry over to the next day they still do not order by priority.

Unfortunately, we can't reproduce this issue in any browser.

Could you please create a test project on your account, add a couple of tasks to it with different priorities and due dates: "every day starting 20. Feb" for example, making the starting date a day when you have no tasks due, then query for this specific day in the search box and let me know if you also see these tasks out of order (by priority)?

I created a project called 'Test' and I added 6 different tasks with different priorities. Some had a due date of just Feb. 20 and others with the 'every day staring 20. feb'. When I did the query for Feb. 20 they were all in the proper order based on priority, so that worked properly.
I then changed them all to a due date of today and did the standard 'today' query and they all were not organized by priority (I am not sure how they are organized).
I also changed the date of a few tasks in both of the projects to 'tomorrow' and when I query 'tomorrow' they are in the correct order. The only issue seems to be with the 'today' query.

Jeff,

Reordering items with a certain priority on the "today" view should save this order permanently. Please tell me - have you tried to reorder tasks in the "today" section accordingly to their priority already while being online when using Todoist?

Please try to do it for each priority, that is - first put p1 tasks to the top, then all p2 tasks below etc. Now, when you add a new test task with a certain priority due "today", it should be added within the correct group. Please let me know if it doesn't.

Also - are all the tasks you're referring to parent tasks? Expanded sub-tasks may indeed be displayed out of order.

Yesterday I re-ordered the tasks in the 'today' section according to their priority (1st p1 then p2, etc...) while being online (using drag and drop). They stayed in this order for the rest of the day yesterday.
When I added a new task it would go into the correct order based on priority.
At the end of the day I moved all my unfinished tasks (using drag and drop) to 'tomorrow'. When I then did a query for 'tomorrow' all the tasks were in proper order.
This morning when I logged on and went to the 'today' view they were all out of order again.

Non of my tasks are parent or sub-tasks.

Thank you for this information. We've tried to reproduce this issue also by setting up a series of tasks with different priorities and today they've remained in the correct order, but we haven't moved them to tomorrow which we just did and we'll check if their order changes tomorrow.

Please clarify - how exactly did you drag & drop them to tomorrow - did you move them to the box that says "Drop to postpone: Tomorrow" or did you move them to the "Tomorrow" section. If you've used the first option (the box), did you move drag & drop them in the order of their priority (this shouldn't make any difference, but just to make sure we're reproducing this in the same way, we'd appreciate if you'd clarify this)?

I did the drag and drop to the 'Drop to postpone: Tomorrow' and I believe I did it from top to bottom which would mean I did it by priority.
My today tasks are still out of order so let me know if there is anything you would like me to try today.

Occom's Razor gentlemen, clearly there is something just straight up wrong with the default "Today" query. If it's not fixable, then just tell us so we can find a work around.

Just chiming in to say I have this issue too.

Sorting my date is working, as expected. After that I have 7 tasks sorted by priority and then the remaining 4 are not in any order I can workout.

This is for the Today view with Firefox 18.

Also chiming in to say that I have this problem. I swear it was working a week ago, but, now that I think about it, I'm noticing that I absolutely can't get the tasks to auto-sort based on priority. I have no idea what's going on and although I haven't read every single line Jeff Brulzeman has written, his problems are almost identical to mine.

The problem extends beyond "Today" and is systemic to every day.

The last two days it has been working fine, but when I logged on this morning my 'today' was again out of order. Last night instead of doing a 'drag and drop' to move my tasks to 'tomorrow' I did did a 'postpone' on each task from my iPhone using the Todoist app. Hopefully this information can be of some help.

For now, as a workaround, to make sure you won't miss any top priority tasks, you could try to query p1 or p2 etc.

Thanks. I don't have that many tasks per day, so I don't think I'll ever completely miss a top priority task. However, I do find it inconvenient/annoying to see the list for a given day and have to either visually re-orient or manually re-order the tasks. And, just to be clear, this problem of "randomized tasks" occurs even excluding the tasks that have fixed times (which I understand as going to the top of a given day).

I have the same issue. Its really frustrating. Do we know when this will be fixed? The last staff reply was on Feb 08, it's been 4 months and no fix yet.

Hello Pranay,

We're sorry for the inconvenience, but we simply can't reproduce it at all. We went through the code multiple times, tried to recreate it under a wide variety of circumstances and the only way to identify and fix this issue is to have just one example of how to trigger it, that is - one single way to do something to a task that will cause it being sorted incorrectly.

If you know how to recreate this issue and there is something that you can do to a task that will always break its sorting order on the today list, please let us know and we'll be able to fix this issue very quickly.

For now, try to see if the issue persist after clearing the cache and Todoist's offline data and check if it also occurs in a different browser.

It seems to occur more with tasks that have sub-tasks associated with them.

We understand that this issue is frustrating and seems to occur fore other users too, but again - we need a way to reproduce it to analyze the process of how it occurs. What breaks the order, what must be added to a task or how must it be edited, dragged, modified, moved etc. to break its sorting. Without that, we're checked all the code that's responsible for sorting and it doesn't seem to have any issues and we've never stumbled across this problem ourselves.

I have also still the issue, that my tasks are not sorted properly (by priority) in the views "Today", "7 days"...
The issue appears randomly from time to time, that my tasks are messed up. Pressing "p" does not help - it has only effect in the project views.
It is the same sorting/behaviour in the web version, firefox plugin and android app.
Timezone is correct.
I dont use sub-tasks.
Maybe it is a problem when using different platforms???
I use Todoist on PC, Tablet and Smartphone (both Android) side by side.

We're very sorry foe the inconvenience, we've been looking into this for a long time and unfortunately, we can neither find anything in our code that causes this nor can we reproduce this.

That said, there must be a common trigger that causes this issue, it could be a different platform, it could be a certain way of changing a priority of a task or maybe any other task property, maybe a sync issue, but again - without knowing what the circumstance is that triggest this, it's near-impossible for us to predict every possible combination of actions that can be made on a task across all platforms and see which could cause that as the amount of available options and order in which they can all or some be done is enormous.

If you know under what circumstance this can be triggered or can reproduce is so that always after you perform a certain action, this order is broken, this would be a huge help for us to identify this bug as again - so far we've spent a lot of time trying to reproduce it and go over all code that is in any way responsible for the order of tasks to no avail :(

The issue is still persistent in my account, i can only reorder the tasks by manually drag and drop every single task :-(
This is quite annoying...
If you want, you can have a look into the tasks of my account - there are no secrets hidden - NSA listens anyway ;-)

I'm sure, there must be a (hidden) property in the tasks database that causes the wrong sorting!? There is a sorting algorithm(!?) and it has very(!) straight, clear and simple rules(!?) - so something must be wrong - this can't be mystery...

We have very strict privacy rules and never access any account although upon clear agreement, another user allowed us to make a clone of his account anonymously (this process replaces all data, project names, task names etc. with xxxxxx but keeps the structure) and unfortunately this has also not helped us identify this issue as we need to know what is triggering it. That is - at what point exactly does the order change for the first time. Once it's broken, we can also just reorder it manually, but unfortunately we don't know yet what breaks it in the first place.

I'm having the exact same problem on ChromeOS. I just added most the tasks this morning. Even the ones I added this morning did not show any pattern of where they would end up in the list (that I could notice). All of my P1 tasks appear at the top of the list for today, but the P2 and P3 are interspersed.

I'm trying to migrate from another program, I can't RememberTheName. This problem makes me not want to migrate.

A little more info: the trend" is that my P1s are followed by my P3s followed by my P2s, but there are exceptions. As of now, there is only one exception - all of my P1s, one P2, all of my P3s, then the rest of the P2s. (The stranded P2 has been on my list a long time.)

I just changed the priority of a P2 to P3 (a recurring task, if it matters), and the item was moved from the cluster of P2s at the bottom *up* to the cluster of P3s. It was put in the middle of the P3s.

There doesn't seem to be any correlation to tags, projects, recurrence, GMail link, or name.

Hello Colby,

The way the ordering works is that by default, tasks on the date-based views should be auto-sorted primarily by time, then by priority from P1 at the top to P3 and P4 at the bottom. However making any manual changes there can disrupt the order.

If you put a few tasks of a certain priority in a new place, next time you change or add a task with this priority, Todoist will look for where the most tasks of this priority are and put it into this place. If you've moved most tasks of a certain priority, let's say P3 above P1, then this is where further tasks with P3 will go.

We're still unable to reproduce a situation which would trigger this sorting to get broken without manual reordering. Do you remember any event which might have started it?

Also, if you would now reorder these tasks based on their priority correctly, will the issue persist the next day?

Thanks for the reply. Please note that my order was primarily P1, P3, P2 - just to be clear.

I understand the clustering effect. That's no problem.

I cannot sort the Today view - P does nothing, S does nothing. If I sort a project, that has no effect on the Today view.

Are you asking me to re-sort manually, then?

If this is the issue - a manual reordering creating a general state of random order - then is the only way out to reorder manually everything? I would love for P and S to work in the today view and then boom - done.

I will try manually reordering and see what happens. I have over 50 tasks today (and often that's the case), so doing this daily would not a long-term solution for me.

If you say that the tasks were always ordered: P1, P3, P2, please note that the dark blue boxes represent priority 2 and the light blue - priority 3, please confirm if that's what you saw. The correct sort is - red, dark blue, then light blue.

The P and S shortcuts indeed work only for projects. Yes, please try to reorder everything manually. After you do this, Todoist should remember where to put these tasks from now on and you won't have to reorder them anymore.

Yes, the colors show P3s listed before P2s. Before I reordered, I did have one P2, then all the P3s, then the rest of the P2s. So no matter what with color, that's not sorted. Earlier this AM, there were quite a few anomalies with the P2s and P3s. The P1s so far have always sorted to the top, but that could be a happy accident.

I really do appreciate that you're interacting with this.

I'll check in the AM or after I add any more tasks today (like I need *that*).

Currently the "messed up task bug" is getting worse and worse again... i have it every day or every second day now...
This is very annoying!
If only the "p" button would work in the daily view, this would be a workaround...

I discovered that the "messed up issue" only occurs either
- when i am working on the todoist website around midnight or
- when i am opening the todoist website for the first(!) time on a new day

It never happens during the day!
Maybe this can give you a hint?
Maybe a time/timezone/midnight issue?

I don't know if this will be helpful... but I have had this issue for a while too. I have tried to reproduce it intentionally but it just happens or it doesn't.

What I can tell you is that I notice it more during the week when I open it from IE on my work computer. On evenings and weekends I use my personal PC and view it from Chrome. All worked well this weekend from Chrome but this morning after I postponed a couple of items in IE (using right click "Do it today" or "Postpone") now the sort is very messed up using either browser.

I can go into individual projects and use the "P" option to sort those by priority... and those sorts are refelcted when I view the Today or 7-Day view. But there are multiple projects in those views and cumulatively they are out of order. When I use "P" to try to sort Today or 7-Day in IE I see the following Javascript error.

I think i can reproduce the error - i will try it again in the next days:
Open Todoist before midnight in the browser (Firefox), work with it and postpone some tasks to the next day.
Keep the window open in the browser during midnight.
After midnight, click on "today" - than the tasks are messed up.

I am quite sure this error is associated somehow with "midnight"...

It's a very complicated issue that is only sometimes replicable. Due to this, it's very hard to find the cause of the issue. We thought the big TD Next update would resolve the issue due to much of the code changing, but it seems it has not.

We are still looking into it and are hopeful.

I also thought, that after the big update, this issue would be resolved.
But it isn't. Yesterday and today, it happened again.
Again, it happens always, when i open the todoist website for the FIRST time on a new day (after midnight). It never happens again during this day.
The sorting was okay before (on the previous day).

Please tell me - does the order change completely so that you see tasks with one priority below a different priority? We've indeed updated the system making it impossible to store a task order that would involve mixing priorities, you can now only reorder tasks of the same priority within the same priority group.

Yes Prio 1 and Prio 2 tasks are mixed.
But if i change the priority of one task of this day, then the daily view is completely and properly resorted.
I think i can live with this little issue now, since i only have to touch one task and not 30 tasks any more...
Maybe a (browser) cache issue, because it only happens if i open the website for the first time on a new day? After touching one task, everything is fine again.

Hi there -

I have the same problem. When viewing by project there is an icon that allows me to sort by priority. When viewing by a date, there is not an icon that allows me to sort by priority. It's really that simple of a description.

What I cannot understand is that this is a conversation that has been going on for over a YEAR! And there doesn't seem to be an understanding or a path to a solution. This blows me away for a paid product.

Michael,

During that year, it was an issue with the Today/date based views having an issue, one where items would get mixed up and we were not able to reproduce that.

Due to this, we ended up changing out those views work, making it more locked down as described above, and I believe most of the issues now are related to people trying to organise it away that is not possible anymore.

Nonetheless, we are looking into any reports saying otherwise.
