Certain tasks are appearing in multitude of copies

SD

This has been going on for a while: tasks I create end up appearing in several copies. Today I had several multitudes of copies of the same two tasks -- well over 20 copies of each.

Hello Shiri,

Unfortunately, we can't reproduce this issue. In order to do so, we'll need the exact steps that need to be taken to recreate this situation.

Please tell me, can you remember when did this happen exactly? Is there any specific action that triggers this issue? Are you accessing Todoist through any third-party mobile apps, the mobile site etc.?

Best regards,
David

Hello Roman,

Thank you for this information. We would greatly appreciate if you could describe how does this happen exactly - when you save the task, does it duplicate itself at this point? Do you have to refresh the view for it to duplicate?

If there's any method that can be used to reproduce this issue, it would be very helpful in order to identify the source of this issue.

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

Those are great questions. I only noticed it later, once I was back in the webapp - not when I was creating the task through the browser plugin. I just had a go at creating some tasks and couldn't reproduce it, so the conditions under which it happens might be small!

Speaking of which, another hard to reproduce, but definitely happening, bug is multiples of the same task appearing in the completed view, all with the same time stamp. Often comes in 3's.

Roman,

Please make sure that the completed tasks are not completion events of recurring tasks. If you complete a recurring tasks multiple times, each event will appear in the history.

Also, please tell me - are you using any browser plugins? Especially plugins which may monitor network activity - ad- or script-blockers or plugins that are supposed to speed up downloading etc.?

David

They are of recurring tasks yes, but I didn't hit the tick key more than once because the due date is still for the next day - it seems that it just randomly makes extra copies in the completed tasks *without* counting them multiple times in the counter.

I use AdBlock, Google Dictionary, Chinese Popup Dictionary, and Clearly.

Roman,

We're very sorry for the inconvenience, but without knowing the steps to reproduce this issue or at least a specific situation when this issue occurs, we can't identify its source and try to fix it.

Could you please tell ma what due date did you use in the recurring task that has been duplicated on the "Completed" list as well as the one added through GMail that occurred multiple times?

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

Unfortunately I don't have the exact steps to reproduce, and I agree with Roman that the situation may be a relatively rare one.

However, I can tell you that I noticed this seems to occur for me in the webapp (not the plugin). I also think this occurs when I uncheck a completed task, copy its contents, and then re-check the original task. But I was also not able to reproduce consistently, unfortunately...

I'll keep me eyes open if this happens again. But, usually the duplicates only appear post-hoc so it's hard to reconstruct what created the duplication.

Thanks,
-Shiri

Shiri,

Thank you very much for this information. Upon every bug report, we check if it's possible to either reproduce this or if there is any possibility of any mistakes in our code (or both), but so far we haven't found anything in our code that could cause this.

Of course it's possible that a certain chain of events triggers it and if we knew what needs to happen for this bug to occur, we can then check in detail certain affected parts of our software and fix it.

It does indeed seem like a very rare issue and we greatly appreciate any reports of any situations in which it occurs. It helps us pin-point the cause of this problem.

David

That's a really good question David, but I'm afraid I don't know!

Next time it happens I'll try to remember what kind of due date was used in the task!

Hi David,

Unfortunately this bug is reappearing with a vengeance. It's been occurring for the past few weeks with multiple cases. But right now I have one project with 278 copies that spawned from only two tasks. That's especially impressive considering that there's a 150 tasks-per-project limit... is it possible for you to clean up this specific project? I'm really not looking forward to clicking delete 276 times.

Thanks,
-Shiri

Hello Shiri,

We're sorry for the inconvenience, but so far we still can neither reproduce nor identify the source of this issue. If there are any patterns to the circumstances in which this issue occurs, we would greatly appreciate if you would let us know. For example - does it always happen if you use our mobile app or always when you make a certain change offline etc.?

Reg. deleting the duplicated tasks, if the original content of the project was only 2 tasks, please create a new project with the same name, move the 2 original tasks to it and then delete the project with the 276 duplicated tasks.

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

Honestly, as a software developer, if there was any info I had regarding this I would be more than happy to share it with you to help you reproduce the bug. The problem is that I rarely if ever can tell when this bug is going to manifest. While I've had it happen in "real time" more than once, e.g. when I delete a task and then undo the deletion, the task sometimes multiplies (but not always! and it also happens sometimes with no deletion); however, on many more occasions I only discovered these copies several hours or days after editing the original task, so recalling in what situation it was created is nearly impossible. Online or offline -- I've seen both. I have not seen this specifically happen when editing in the mobile app but have definitely seen it on my browser.

The only other input that may be helpful to you is that I tend to use the keyboard shortcuts to speed up processing time, and often use copy&paste shortcuts alongside it on the task's text. E.g. sometimes I will copy a task once to create a changed copy, only to find anywhere from 5 to 50 copies of it suddenly appear. (Or most recently, this 200+ copy situation.)

Hope this helps... with the most recent bugs I've been experiencing (this and the authentication which I sent you separately), I must say that I'm contemplating switching out of Todoist for the first time... when the tool causes more work than it saves, maybe it's time for me to move on... I'd hate to do that, and you know how much I love Todoist, but I'm getting pretty frustrated.

Your help appreciated as always... yours,
-Shiri

Also, not sure if this helps but likewise I have not seen this occur when emailing tasks to a project. So my inclination is that this is something with the browser front-end and has to do with the keyboard shortcuts. (Curse my power-user mad typing skillz...)

Shiri,

Thank you for this information, we'll continue to try to reproduce this issue. We wish we had a solution for it already, but so far, we couldn't recreate the circumstances to trigger it and without it, it's almost impossible to identify what's causing it.

It may indeed be caused on the front-end and we suspect that the cached data may generate this as it contains a log of what has been changed and synchronizes this change with the server so the event "create this task" may be pushed multiple times for some reason.

Please tell me, do you have any plugins installed in your browser which may in any way affect networking, that is - script-clocking plugins, ad-blockers or any extensions that may monitor the web (toolbars, flash downloaders etc.)?

David

Hi David,

Thanks for your response. I do have several extension installed in Chrome, I use AdBlock and several others. Let me send you that in a "private question" right away.

Thanks,
-Shiri

Hi David,

FYI, I just had this occur again and one of the rare occasions that I saw it in real time. Here's what I can say for sure:
I was online, in the Chrome interface, and created a new task; then I immediately went back to add a label to it. The duplicate task was created without the label, which I think echoes your thought that the edit is perceived by the backend as a new task. This time I only had one spurious copy.

Hope this helps,
-Shiri

Shiri,

Thank you for this information, this may indeed help us solve this issue. Also, please tell me - did you ever use the Todoist Chrome extension while also having the Todoist web-app opened in Chrome?

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

I have done that in the past, although I don't think any of these recent duplicates have been created using the Todoist Chrome extension. Mostly if I do that it's just to create tasks from Gmail and I may have the web-app opened in another window.

Thanks,
-Shiri
