Tasks occasionally duplicate. Why? How to resolve?

TD team:

I'm being impacted by an application bug and would appreciate your help in resolving it.

I've found that occasionally some of my tasks will duplicate. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this (i.e., this doesn't impact the same tasks, it doesn't happy on a particular day, with a particular browser, on a particular project, etc). From a user's perspective, I simply add a task and it behaves as expected for a few days - then I get my daily email of unfinished tasks and I notice that a single task has been replicated 10-15 times (so one task titled "Yoga" becomes 13 tasks titled "Yoga").

When I've seen this behavior before in other applications, it has usually been the result of a database error - I think usually occurring when data is being replicated through various regions (Alpha -> Production, for example).

There are two examples for you in my account right now:

Example A: "Yoga" under project "Life > Do". I discovered this task to be duplicated about 13 times today and deleted the 12 extra iterations of it.

Example B: "Sales Management" under project "@Agendas > Susan." In the interest of equipping you with a salient example, I've left this one untouched - so all the replicated tasks are still there (though I'd like to clean it up soon - I hate clutter).

The one other thing I can think to call your attention to is that this issue also affects the daily digests I get - so if you need to determine what dates the unnecessary replications occur, I'd recommend looking through my digest emails (I assume you have access to them?) to see when one "Sales Management" spawned 12 children.

This is bothersome to clean up, so I'd appreciate your help understanding and fixing this at the earliest.

Thank you, in advance, for your help.

Best,

Ashley

(PS: I just received my daily digest and I see this has impacted more tasks than I thought this time. If you need me to forward this digest to you, just let me know what address to send it to).

Hello Ashley,

we do not have access to your tasks or your Daily Digest (which is being generated automatically). I will pass this issue to the developers, but please tell me:
- When did this started to happen? Was it happening ever since you've created your Todoist account or at a certain point?
- Are you using any third-party Todoist-based mobile apps with your Todoist account? If so, is it possible that this issue occurs only with tasks added/edited using these apps?

Best regards,
David

Hi David,

Thanks for the note.

This has been happening ever since I went "Premium" (maybe 2 or 3 months ago?). But, I haven't been saving my Daily Digests - so I couldn't tell you for certain.

I don't believe I have any third-party apps (I tend to shy away from third-party stuff). I do have the Firefox and Outlook plugins, but I believe those are yours. I occasionally access ToDoIst via my phone, but I do that via my mobile browser, not through an app. I also occasionally access ToDoIst via my iPad - but I believe that app is yours also, correct? In any case - this issue predates me getting my iPad, and I don't think any of the tasks which have been impacted were added via the iPad. I rarely ever add tasks through any of these channels - I almost always add tasks via my computer. Likewise, when I'm accessing ToDoIst via my phone or iPad, it is usually only to view tasks or mark them complete.

Does this help? Is there any other information I can provide?

Thanks for your help, David. I look forward to hearing from your Developers.

Best,
Ashley

Ashley,

yes, the Outlook and Firefox plugins as well as the iOS app and mobile site have been developed at Todoist.

Please tell me:
- Are you using any plugins in your browser(s) which may influence your network, such as - plugins that supposed to speed up your network, for example?
- What due dates do these tasks have? Does this issue always occur with recurring tasks or also tasks with a single deadline (or no due date at all)?

David

David,

Good questions.

No - I'm not using any browser plugins which may influence my network connection. The only other plugin I use is the Delicious plugin (for bookmarks). But, I don't have this installed across all the browsers I use to access ToDoIst (I access it regularly through Firefox and Chrome, at work and at home).

I see no pattern in the due dates of the affected tasks. Of the four I just looked at, two have no due date, one has a due date of Jun 7 2012 (I suck), and one has a due date of August 1 2012.

I appreciate your help. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Cheers,

ajw

Hello Ashley,

according to the developers, this bug will be fixed soon (most likely within 1-2 weeks) in the next update.

We're sorry for any inconvenience it might have caused you and thank you very much for reporting it.

Dave,

I'm glad to hear it - and impressed by your and your team's response. I reported this issue less than 24 hours ago and it has already been (more or less) resolved - kudos on an excellent turn-around time.

Presuming you don't need the examples any longer, I'll delete the duplicate tasks and look forward to a fix within the next two weeks.

Best,

Ashley

Hi,

Would you mind sharing what the latest on this is? It has been slightly more than two weeks, so I assumed the fix went in. Unfortunately, one of my tasks just duplicated around 50 times, which seems to suggest the error still exists.

The good news, however, is that I think I've figured out the source: I was using ToDoIst on my iPad this morning. When I visited ToDoIst on my desktop, I saw new duplicates. So, I assume the iPad is involved.

Thanks for your help,

Ashley

Hello Ashley,

this bug should be fixed by now with our HTML5 release. Please tell me - are you always using our iOS app on ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/todoist/id476672770?mt=8 ) the iPad, the mobile todoist.com/m site or the full web-app?

Ashley,

could you please try to reproduce this bug by using:
1. Only the iOS app, sync, then check the full web-app on your computer,
2. Only the mobile /m site and then check if this causes the issue
3. The full web-app - same process.

David

Hi,

I've performed the steps above, but the error has not recurred (yet). I'll give it 24 hours and let you know what happens.

I just received my daily digest this morning and I have tons (maybe about 100) duplicate tasks.

Thanks,

Ashley

David,

A quick update:

I tested this as we discussed and, up until today, did not see this issue reoccur. This morning, I added a new task (actually, moved it to a new project) while ToDoIst was indicating that it was in off-line mode and would connect to the network soon. When it connected to the network, everything appeared fine. Now, about five hours later, the last I added was duplicated about 7 times.

Thus, I think we can rule out iOS as a contributor and hone in on network connectivity as the main culprit. I'll let you know I see any other examples.

Thanks,

ajw

Ashley,

thank you for this update./ Meanwhile, we've managed to reproduce a certain action that duplicates tasks on the "7 days" view. A structure with a parent task, a sub-task and a sub-sub-task will duplicate the children if you use the arrow on the left to roll them out and then click on the reordering handle next to the level 1 sub-task. After collapsing the structure, the set of sub-tasks will be duplicated.

We're working on this bug already, we hope it may either fix the issue you're experiencing or lead us to it's source.

Best regards,
David

Hi David Trey,

I have just experienced a task duplication that seems to be described by your last reply above.

The other issue is when I am back in the "7 day" view, if I delete the "duplicate task" it will actually delete the sub-task under the parent structure as well.
Any estimate of when this problem can be fixed?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Matthew

Hello Matthew,

this issue should already been fixed and I can no longer reproduce it.

Please log out of Todoist, clear your browser's cache and offline storage data, reload the browser and log back into todoist.com If you're using a bookmark, please make sure that it points directly to https://todoist.com and doesn't include any version number. Once you log in, you should see v=64 within the URL.

If this still won't solve this problem, please tell me:
- Which browser are you using?
- Can you reproduce this issue in at least 1 different browser?

Best regards,
David
