Open GMail in own window

U

A long time ago when you clicked a GMail link in a Todoist task it opened the email in a separate/own window, and not in a full GMail view.

Then one day this stopped and the full GMail is opened.

PLease can you put this feature back because when I want to read an email about a task I do not want to be distracted with my Inbox, and what new email messages I have. It reduces productivity to open the full Gmail client instead of just the email message relating to the task.

Thanks

Hello Laurie,

please clarify - when you're clicking on an email-task, you're being redirected to the Gmail Inbox and not to the particular email you've linked?

If so, please tell me:
- What's the exact content of the linked task (when you use the "Add email as task" option, what do you see inside the task input field)?
- Which plugin are you using? Todoist for Chrome, Firefox, Outlook or Todoist Anywhere?
- Are you using any GMail Labs add-ons?

Best regards,
David

I am using Todoist Anywhere mainly, but tried with Chrome add-on and it was the same.

The text in my Task when I add "Add email as task" is:

[[gmail=1362f83hde3852e0@gmail, (Todoist Support) A comment has been added to Open GMail in own window]]

(note: i have changed the GMail ref. ID for the purpose of this - this issue happens with ALL emails)

I have the following Labs enabled:

Auto-advance
Background Send
Canned Responses
Default 'Reply to all'
Default Text Styling
Filter import/export
Message Sneak Peek
Signature tweaks
Undo Send

Thanks

Laurie,

please try to to disable all your Labs add-ons and see if it solves this issue. If it does, please enable them one at a time and check again after you turn each one on to see which one causes this issue.

The content of the task that you've posted is correct and should open the linked message directly and not the main Inbox.

If disabling the Labs add-ons doesn't help and you're not using any ad- or script-blocking plugins, please tell me - are you moving a message after you add it as a task to a different folder in GMail?

Best regards,
David

Hi

I disabled ALL Labs and this problem still exists. I am not moving messges after they are added (BUT I usually do, but I tested it without moving and the problem still exists).

You say this "The content of the task that you've posted is correct and should open the linked message directly and not the main Inbox."

but when I go to Todoist and hover over the link, the link shows https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox/1362aa5b372341ee

This is NOT the open in its own window link, this is the link to the main Google window, with all my Lables and everything. So I think its a Todoist issue. The link to its own separate window would look something like:

https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?ui=2&view=btop&ver=18zqjei83j4t35&cat=To%20Process&search=cat&th=1362iw346a652f94&cvid=1

Actually that last link is what is displayed when I click the open in own window icon, but going to it directly in the browser is blank, so maybe GMail are doing something else. Either way, the link to an email in its own window needs to be found and link to that, so we only open up the email in question, and not the entire GMail interface.

Laurie,

the form of the link you've posted above ( https://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox/1362aa5b372341ee ) is the only available option and what it should open your GMail account with the mail you've linked to being opened automatically within your Inbox.

It is possible that the link format redirecting to a new window has been disabled by GMail and therefore this option has been deprecated. I will pass this question to the developers.

You can set in your browser setting whether you would like new links to be opened in a new window or hold SHIFT while clicking on any link to open it in a new window (or CTRL to open it in a new tab).

Best regards,
David

Just to make sure you understand what I mean...

In GMail when reading an email, there is a button to open that email it a new window. So it only shows that email, and does not show your labels (Inbox, sent etc.).

A while back I am sure Todoist did this. But then it stopped. Instead it does go to the right email, but in the full GMail app, with my Inbox and other labels on the left.

The problem with this is I see new email in the Inbox, but I dont want to. I am working on the task at hand and need the information in the email, but seeing new email in my Inbox means its is distracting.

So what I would like is Todoist to bring back the open email in its own window, so we only see that email, and not the full GMail interface.

Did you understand what I mean, or think I meant the email was not opened? Because the link Todoist goes to is the full GMail client, not a new window that shows only that email.

Thanks

Laurie,

thank you for clarifying. I understand what you mean, but I've passed this to the developers as I'm not entirely sure at which point this feature has been changed and what was the reason for it and I don't want to give you incorrect information.

I will inform you once I know the details.

Best regards,
David

Hello Laurie,

according to the developers, this is indeed a deprecated feature and we're not sure if it's even possible to link directly to the email box right now (GMail has changed some things since this feature was available).

Still, you're welcome to add a request to our Votebox: http://todoist.com/Vote/ and we may consider trying to implement it in the future (if possible).

Best regards,
David
