why do tasks reorder when sorted by priority?

S

i just made my first short list of tasks and then gave some a high priority so i could sort to jsut those items, but when i do, they compoeltely reorder themselves, which seems utterly odd since reordering is such a well addressed topic in todoist generally.

am i doing something wrong? missing something? any help hugely appreciated!

Hello Sarah,

you didn't do anything wrong, this is indeed how the sorting option work - sorted tasks remain sorted permanently unless you sort them again by date. Either way - the original order cannot be restored.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your feedback, we will consider changing this function in future development.

You're welcome to add a feature request for a "restore original task order" function to our Votebox:

not sure i explained my question right: what i want to know is why they arent in the same order within the "select by priority 1" list as they are when in a complete list of projects. for example, you'll notice that all the TO JM items aren't grouped together once in a priotity list, although they are all part of the same project and all appear together when in the 'show all projects" view.

any thoughts on how i can restructure my to do lists before sorting to make the sorts seem more orderly?

Sarah,

sorry for the misunderstanding. Please send a screenshot showing this issue to david@todoist.com

When you add tasks to a project, they keep their order regardless of priority and/or due date as long as you don't sort them using "sort by priority" or "sort by date".

Once you do, they will get reordered according to their priority with !p1 at the top considering main tasks first, so a main task with 1st priority will be at the top along with all its sub-tasks even if they aren't top priority. All sub-tasks will also be sorted according to their priority, but only within the main task.

Same applies to the search result of a "p1" query (showing all tasks with the particular priority).

Please clarify, are you referring to the search result view or a temporal view (x days etc.)? Also, are you referring to sub-tasks being ordered incorrectly or main tasks?

Best regards,
David
