Lost virtually all data on iPad

DG

Hi, having just begun to use todoist today, I spent most of the day creating a Project structure with tasks on my ipad. Opening it this evening, almost all of my projects, subprojects, and associated tasks have gone. Please help!

Hello Derek,

Please make sure that you've logged into the correct account using the same login method (either manual login or via Google Sign-In).

Also, try to log in on the web to see if your tasks are there. If you're certain that you only have one Todoist account, use the correct login credentials, only one login method and still don't see your tasks - did you add them while you were offline and then deleted and reinstalled the app before syncing the data?

Hi David
I am logged into the same account, for definite. The web view is showing the same view i.e. the projects etc are gone. The common denominator is that I did indeed add them when I was offline (the remaining few items were added when I was online, both before and after the offline period). However, I definitely did not delete and reinstall the app before syncing the data.

Derek,

Data loss in our apps is basically impossible (except for the situation mentioned above). Did you manually resync the data? I see that you have a free account so it would only sync when triggered.

The only other very rare situation in which data loss could occur would be if you would exceed the limit of the offline storage. Right now, the limit is (if I'm correct) around 500 actions so if you have made more than 500 actions in one offline session (add projects, mode them, change them, add and change tasks and their properties etc.), then the latest changes could be discarded as new ones would overwrite them, but again - that's highly unlikely and even then, it would be only a partial data loss.

That said, just to be sure - did you at some point when being online actually manually resync it and waited at least a few seconds for the sync to complete? If not - try to pull down the left pane or any list in our app to trigger the sync.

David

Thanks David. I appreciate your help.
- I did manually resync
- I didn't exceed the offline storage limit

It appears that what happened was that it "reverse-synced" I.e. When I went online, my offline changes were overwritten by the few adds I had made while previously online. So I would suggest to you that there is at least one other scenario, other than deleting the app while offline, where data can be lost, which I guess you guys should look into.

That data loss notwithstanding, I was impressed with todoist otherwise, so I am going to upgrade to Premium, which if I understand correctly, will get me automatic backup, as well as several other features? That would have avoided this situation, am I right?

Derek,

We're very sorry for the inconvenience. Even if you make new changes on a different platform, the moment you sync the older ones, the server should compare the timestamps and the state of your account and "fill it in" with everything that's missing based on the offline cache, it should not consider the latest changes as the final state.

We'll certainly look into it and will also soon introduce forced push-sync which will constantly update the data and make the sync more robust in general.

With a Premium account you would indeed get access to backups. One backup is created automatically each day, but you'd have the option to generate one anytime and download all your data.

David
