When adding tasks through the iOS beta app there's a good chance that they are duplicated.
I can't replicate every time, but has happened a few times now.
Please let us know how we can reproduce this issue. The only way to identify it is to know how it can be triggered and so far, we couldn't trigger it.
Just added a simple task now on the beta app and it's duplicated itself. Details are:
Name - Wash conditioner
Project - Shopping
Context - @errands
Date - today
It was added as a duplicate.
Unfortunately, we can't reproduce this issue. Please tell me:
- What version of iOS are you using?
- Are you adding the label/context by picking it from the label list?
- How exactly does the task duplicate? you add it and they you see 2 such tasks immediately or does it take some time to duplicate? If so - how much time?
- Do you see the task counter in this project go up by 2 when you add this 1 task?
- Are you online or offline when this happens?
• iOS version 6.1.3 (10B329)

• I added the task and immediately saw two versions saved. This has happened about three times in the iOS beta app, although I've added many more tasks with no problem.
• Pretty certain the task counter increased.
Unfortunately, we couldn't reproduce this at all so far. If there was anything special about these tasks, please let us know. For example - did they all have multiple labels, a certain specific due date, special characters in their names etc.
this has happened to me a couple of times, too, so Tim's problem is definitely not an isulated issue.
I cannot consistently reproduce it an dhave not determined a "trigger condition" that makes it happen.
As a side note: this has already happened before on the "old" iOS app, too.
Thank you for this information. Nonetheless, without being able to trigger it, it's extremely difficult to identify what's causing it. It may be a set of different conditions - bad internet connection, broken connection while syncing, maybe some caching issues, but again - the first step to fix it is to know when exactly does it occur :(
This is now a BIGGER issue. Installed the just released to UK iTunes app store version of the iOS app and the 14 tasks that were due became 68!
There seems to be a discrepancy between the online and desktop version for the time being, but based on prior experience in a number of versions it's likely the duplicates will find them online.
Previously you've asked for evidence on how to replicate, which I could not come up with a viable way to do so. Normally both my computer for the online version and iPhone for iOS version are connected to the same WiFi source. As they were today.
However, this time both were connected to the WiFi, but the WiFi had no internet connection. I've rebooted the router and now both computer and iPhone are connected to WiFi with internet access. Therefore, the only thing I can see amiss is that the iOS device has a network connection, but no internet access.
Could this mean that on attempting to sync duplicates are created when there's a network connection, but no internet access?
As for what's observed, some tasks are not duplicated, some two times, some three times and some six times!
Would really like to see this resolved as has been a persistent issue that affects more than just me and appears to be getting worse.
Ps. some tasks are still being duplicated when marking as completed using both the online and iOS versions. I can't replicate why some duplicate and most don't but the gremlin is still there.
Have you done any complete uninstalls before? I would suggest trying to uninstall the app, restart the phone. Head to the web version, see what happens on the web version (refresh). Fix the duplicates there if need be.
Head into Todoist.com Settings area, under Reminders, and remove any instances of your iPhone if there are any.
Then install the latest version from the Store, and let me know if it still happens.
it seems to have something to do with delayed syncs; yesterday I created a task on my iPhone, while it had no internet connection. After the internet connection was established and Todoist could sync the newly created task that task showed up twice, on my phone as well as in the web app
Have the same problem since last upgrade...on a transient mobile connection in Hong Kong which generally has good 3G but noticed connection slow today...deleted some tasks in two specific categories, after resync both categories multiplied with duplicated tasks from say 28 to 968 tasks, but the web version seems fine..
Am using IOS6.3 on ipad mini. Not adding any labels. Didn't do anything to trigger the dup except synch, the massive duplication was instant upon completion of synch refresh. It didnt duplicate after each task was deleted, but pretty sure it hadn't synchedin that time.
Tried remove app and data, reinstall - problem disappeared - will keep an eye on it and report any further issues...

I noticed my iPhone name in the Todoist.com settings tab used to write the name with % replacement characters for spaces and apostrophes. Now after following your advice the name appears as expected and with no %'s replacement characters.
I'm sharing this as it could be that any Todoist user with a % character replacement in their device name in the settings reminder tab might be suffering with the same duplicate issues.
Not fixed. The duplicate tasks on my iPhone are coming back!
Unfortunately, as mentioned above, without us being able to reproduce this we are having troubles fixing it.
We will keep looking into this, any more information into this, details to when it happens, when it does not, could help very much.
Does using a different account still have the same issues?
Not beta, regular Todoist 6.0.2 iOS 6.1.3, iPhone 3GS
- first, every task at my new list was duplicated, at most 4x times
- uninstalled, duplicates gone, but loose all new notes
- duplicates again, 2x times and not all tasks
- unistall again, duplicates gone
- no duplicates now, but notes are synchronizing in one direction - from web to iOS only
- from iOS to web sync only task name
- both old list or new list, old task or new task
Thanks for the reply. I've been highlighting this duplication error for a number of versions now - beta and regular/gamma - since the official iOS app was released and on a number of threads. The issue persists and I'm not the only person to be effected.
I'm trying to be helpful here and as far as any service I've signed up for I've never been as happy with with tool and willing to help improve by contributing feedback. My patience for this issue and how it' s being resolved us being tested.
If I were to play Devil's advocate, just because I'm not able to replicate the issue, it does not mean there's no issue. I don't believe that it's a user driven event error - if it was I would have seen something by now and be able to describe what I'm doing and the resulting error.
The errors appear to be sync related, irrespective of version, clean un-install or otherwise and have no connection to any task addition/edit/removal, view change, filters or settings update.
I've heard the line that 'without being able to reproduce the error' a number of times now, but surely this can't be the put down answer to a persistent issue.
Currently I have duplicate tasks, only on the iPhone, which is an improvement on prior app versions and using prior advice to simply delete the duplicate tasks does not help - how? There are two to six of the duplicates and only one on the online version; therefore, you mean delete them all and re-add one of them. Why? This is repeated effort for a supposedly simple tool and it's not a solution.

I never meant to place blame or anything of the sort on the user of course, and you are indeed correct, there is an issue here if we can reproduce it or not.
We are looking into it on our end, but in terms of pushing forward with our users, the details of their tasks and how things are created etc, is as much as we can do to figure it out, alongside us working in the background as well.
This was also why I asked if you were to create a new account, do you still have sync type issues as described here? I know this is much to ask and a hassle, but can help us further investigate this issue.
To clarify, if you create a note on the iPhone it does not sync, but if created on the web, it does?

This issue has indeed been elevated to a more serious issue as many more people are having the issue.

An update from my post couple of days ago in case it's of help...initially I noticed that when I changed one or two tasks whilst running on 3G the tasks would duplicate a couple of times on next synch. Last time I changed a lot of tasks, notes, dates and priorities and got massive, ie in the hundreds dups of the changed tasks. Which disappeared after I reinstalled the app. I decided to buy a 4g wireless ap as have been thinking about it for a while anyway and connect my ipad mini via wifi to an lte ap. since then the duplication issue has not reoccurred.

Further feedback, just synced on 4g and doubledups of existing tasks, not the ones I just changed, but only those in next 7 day view which was what I was synching. Appears that any number off duplicates can be created of whichever tasks are being synced when the mbile connection drops or is slow.
More serious now...after deleting duplicates by hand, logout login several Pri 1 tasks and probably others no longer shon. Will top using app until problem is resolved.
We are really sorry about this issue and are looking into reproducing it. Unfortunately we can't reproduce it yet so if anyone finds a way of how to get tasks to duplicate themselves it would be really helpful to resolving this issue.
As an immediate resolution you can logout and login again (this will force the client to fetch fresh data). Please also note that tasks will only be duplicated locally (on the iPhone) and not on your Todoist account.

Guessing you may not be able to reproduce unless you get out and about on 3G for a day and do stuff on the app regularly. I don't have problem on wifi and at least one other user has reported using 3G - it could make sense. Moving to 4g it was ok until I synced in the subway system then dups were back and I know the LTE connection dropped put briefly about the same time, and the dups dropped these and the originals from both app and web this time. So if you can find an area with poor cell reception you may be able to reproduce, otherwise I guess there's something in the new app synch code, or related modules, which are causing the bug if net connection transient during synch I with db.
Login logout does seem to work briefly, but if user has tried to delete dups in meantime they may lose all record.
Hope this feedback is helpful and you get it fixed soon.
We believe we have found the cause and have fixed it. The next update will resolve the duplication issues.

We're very sorry for the inconvenience. Although the issue is now fixed and we've already uploaded version 6.0.3 of our app, unfortunately it must go through Apple's review process. We hope they can speed it up because it's a fix for a critical bug.
The update has just popped up on the appstore so installing it now for a run through - thanks to the team at todoist for fast turnaround..

I've noticed a similar quirk for tasks listed in the completed list, which can only be seen on the desktop / online version.
When marking tasks as complete on the iPhone version there's a chance that they're duplicated. Never more than one duplicate.
Perhaps the same quirk causing the above problems is also duplicating tasks sent back as completed.
So far, we couldn't reproduce this issue. If there's anything specific about the circumstances in which it occurs (always when using it offline or when checking the task off from a certain view etc.) please let us know.
Also, please note that in case of recurring task, the list of completed tasks on the web will mark each completion of a recurring task as a separate event.
