Widget Keeps Going Blank

CG

I am using the Todoist task list widget (4x3) on my Android phone, and usually have "Today" as the default view. Three or four times per day, however, when I go to scroll through the list or otherwise interact with the widget, all the tasks will disappear and the widget will reset to say, "NO TASKS. Start adding task by tapping the top right + icon."

I can click on the "D" in the top left corner to go into the app and that still works - nothing has been erased. But the only way I've found to reset the widget is to delete it and re-pull it. That gets very tedious.

Any suggestions?

Hi Chuck,

Please remove the Widget, and clear the data for the app. You can do this by going to System Settings, Applications, and finding Todoist, clicking "clear data".

If it continues to have this problem after, please tell me what version of Android do you have, any custom ROMs or tweaks?

When did this start happening? Since a recent update, anything that could have been added or changed recently on your Android phone?

Thanks,
Brendon.

Thanks. I did the reload, and will see what happens.

I'm using Android version 4.1.2. This started happening within the last week, but I've only been a Todoist user for about 3 weeks.

I'm running Android version 4.2.2 on Nexus 4, having the exact problem as described by Chuck, happened within the last week or so as well. Also note that I did a factory reset last weekend on this phone.

Oh, and no custom roms or tweaks. This is stock Nexus 4 running 4.2.2.

Hello Chris,

Please tell me - have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the app? If this didn't help, please tell me:
- What is the default view on your widget?
- When exactly does this happen? Is there a pattern, for example - always when you wake up your phone or always after adding a task etc.?

Best regards,
David

I just reinstalled the app, even restarted the phone. For the life of me I can't login again, even though I am logged in on my laptop--same network. I'll make a separate ticket.

-Default view is Today, sometimes 7 days.
-I did not observe a pattern, but I wasn't really looking for one. I will try and be more observant and report back....if I can ever get it to log in again.

Subjectively I want to say this occurs overnight, specifically when I have an overdue task(s). However, I have not observed this occurence enough to isolate the variable.

Chris,

Please clarify, do you actually have a custom filter as your default view that is set to "Today, sometimes 7 days"? If so, that's not a correct query, please change it to "today, 7 days" and let me know if this helps.

Best regards,
David

Sorry David, I am still new to Todoist. What I meant is that I primarily have it set to "Today" but sometimes I will change to "Next 7 days".

"I can confirm on our end that there shouldn't be any login/authorization issues right now, however this may explain the issue with the widget going blank. If you were logged in already, but are in a network that may cause some logging issue, the widget could want to authorize/sync something, but couldn't."

Pasting here for relevance. Each time the widget has gone blank in the past, I have gone in to the Todoist app itself to check that it is connected, and everything is perfectly fine (save for my single login issue recently).

Chris,

Thank you for clarification. Again, without being able to reproduce it, it's very difficult for us to identify what's causing this issue. If you'll notice a pattern when this happens, please let us know.

Best regards,
David

Hi, I am still having the same problem. Even after clearing the data as Brendon suggested -- as well as a complete uninstall and reinstall of the Todoist app -- I am still having the issue of the widget going blank at least a couple times a day.

Also, on Saturday it was failing to sync properly with the internet version of Todoist (but behaved well yesterday). And two tasks that I added via the smartphone app Saturday morning (that were due on Saturday), suddenly "multiplied" on the "Today" screen and each appeared three times in the "Today" list -- but did not sync up and appear on the internet site.

Hi Chuck,

We have started to see some issues arise if the device has a slow or bad connection to the internet.

If you could possibly take notice when the issue happens, if your Data or WiFi connection is strong, this could help us figure out the issue. Also, if you are connecting through any Proxies or high security settings.

Thanks,
Brendon.

So, I woke up to a blank widget again this morning. But then it seemed to have fixed itself several hours later, only to have login issues later.

I am beginning to think this has something to do with the interoperability between my power/data management app (Qualcomm snapdragon Batteryguru) and Todoist. I have excellent WIFI connection on my phone at home -40dbm, it's 1 of 2 devices connected to a 5ghz network in my whole neighborhood.

Hi Chris,

I can confirm on our end there aren't any server/login issues right now, but there have been a few related reports now relating to android connectivity.

If you are able to disable/remove that app to really test if it could be causing issues, this could help us possibly fix the app to not be affected.

Thanks,
Brendon.

Brendon, per your response on June 3, I have been tracking under what situations this occurs. It is still happening at least one a day. I am typically either on my home WiFi, my work WiFi, or the mobile 4G network elsewhere in town. I have very strong connections in all 3 situations. The problem of the widget going blank has occurred in all 3 situations: at home, at work, and on 4G. I am running version 1.2.5 of the app. Thanks.

Hi Chuck,

The recent server issues should be resolved now, and we were hoping this widget issue was related.

Please confirm if it continues the next few days.

Thanks,
Brendon.

Widget has been working great all week - looks like it has been taken care of. Thanks for your help!

I was going to create a new thread but using this one since the issue seems to be related.

I often wake my phone up to a 'No view - Choose a View' widget, and I have a triangle icon on the top right corner of the widget to select a view.

My default view on todoist.com is a custom query (overdue, 7 days, no date) which syncs fine to my android when I go into the Todoist app. However, when my phone sleeps and I wake it, often times I get the issue above.

I'm almost sure this could be related to losing connectivity when the phone sleeps. Because if I choose, on the widget, to select a view, I don't have my 'Start Page' as a view to select, however, if I manually open the application, and go back to the widget, the 'Start Page' view appears as selectable, so it must sync something.

If this is related to connectivity, is there anything that can be done?

It's really a pain to keep going into the app to make it show my custom view on the widget.

Hello Zico,

Please set the custom query as a filter within the Android app and then use this filter in the widget and see if the issue persists.

Best regards,
David

David, I'm trying just that, when I was writing my post aboveI thought of that too.

What I did is, I set my filter manually in the app and UNTICK the 'Sync Start Page' option, maybe with this, it won't keep syncing the view and I won't get the behavior.

Will try it and report back.

David, it seems that fixed it. Seems the issue is when the widget tries to sync with the web, and loses the view.

However, I'm seeing that when the day switches, the tasks from 'Tomorrow' do not jump to 'Today'. Seems the widget is not refreshing. If I open the app, the widget updates. Any ideas?

Zico,

Please try removing the widget and re-adding it. Also, clearing the data for the app after removing the widget might help.

Thanks,
Brendon.

Didn't work, Brendon. Tried for a few days and even tried cleaning the data and starting from scratch.

Any other option? Weird, I used anydo and others and never had refresh problems with widgets.

If there's any other possible solution please let me know.

Zico,

Which version of Android are you running?

Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce this issue, the widget always updates to the latest information. If you create the widget with just using the Today view option, does the issue still occur?

Thanks,
Brendon.

I'm on 4.2.2, Galaxy S4 i9505 using a custom rom.
I'm going to try a Today view, I have a task tomorrow, let's see if it moves to today when the day rolls. Will report back.

I'm resizing the widget to fill the screen, I don't assume this could be an issue? Don't see a relation..

No luck, used 'Today' and the tasks didn't move after the day rolled. I changed the view in the widget itself and then it updated. This is very odd.

I'll try not resizing it just for the sake of troubleshooting.

Zico,

Let us know if that helps. The issue could also possibly be the custom ROM since we are unable to reproduce.

Thanks
